“Impressive to See US and Indian Forces Training Together”: US Ambassador Sergio Gor Reviews Yudh Abhyas 2026 at Mahajan Field Firing Range, Bikaner

BIKANER, RAJASTHAN | SEPTEMBER 24, 2026: The India-US defence partnership came into sharp focus at the Mahajan Field Firing Range in Bikaner, Rajasthan, on Thursday as US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor visited the range to witness and review the ongoing Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2026, where Indian Army and US Army troops are conducting integrated military training across a range of battlefield scenarios. Gor’s visit brought a high-level diplomatic dimension to the exercise, which is simultaneously testing interoperability, battlefield coordination and the ability of the two armies to work together across different operational environments.

Sergio Gor at Mahajan: “Trust, Readiness, Interoperability and Shared Purpose”

During his visit to the Mahajan Field Firing Range, Sergio Gor observed the Indian and US forces training together and highlighted the significance of the bilateral military cooperation. In a post on X, Gor said that it was impressive to see US and Indian forces training together at Mahajan Field Firing Range and described the exercise as reflecting the strength of the defence partnership between the two countries, specifically pointing to trust, readiness, interoperability and shared purpose. He also expressed pride in what the US Army and Indian Army are achieving together.

Earlier, while arriving at the exercise location, Gor had posted that he had “touched down” at Mahajan Field Firing Range for Yudh Abhyas 2026 and was looking forward to seeing US Army and Indian troops train side by side. His visit therefore provided an opportunity to directly observe the field component of the bilateral exercise, including the integration of troops, weapons, fire-support elements and emerging battlefield technologies.

Senior Indian Army Leadership Present at Mahajan Field Firing Range

During Sergio Gor’s visit to the Mahajan Field Firing Range, Major General Deepak Seervan, GOC 24 RAPID Division, was also present at the range. His presence added a senior Indian Army operational dimension to the engagement as the two armies demonstrated and discussed aspects of their ongoing combined training. The Mahajan component of Yudh Abhyas is particularly significant because it brings the exercise into a desert operational environment, complementing the mountainous and semi-mountainous training being conducted simultaneously at Auli in Uttarakhand.

The visit at Mahajan thus brought together senior diplomatic and military leadership at a location where Indian and US troops are undertaking practical field training, including live-fire activities, artillery engagements, target acquisition, air-defence drills, attack-helicopter operations and counter-unmanned aircraft training.

Yudh Abhyas 2026: 22nd Edition of India-US Army Exercise

The 22nd edition of Exercise Yudh Abhyas officially commenced on September 15, 2026, with the opening ceremony held at the Auli Foreign Training Node in Uttarakhand. The exercise is being conducted simultaneously at Auli and the Mahajan Field Firing Range in Rajasthan, bringing together approximately 600 personnel from each side. At the opening ceremony, Major General Amaresh Gunjan, GOC 14 Infantry Division, and Colonel Benjamin Jackman, Commander of the 1st Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 11th Airborne Division, US Army, addressed the participating contingents.

The exercise is designed to enhance the joint military capability of the Indian Army and US Army, with a particular focus on the employment of Integrated Battle Groups and infantry-oriented operations. While Auli provides a mountainous and semi-mountainous environment for the exercise, Mahajan provides the forces with an important desert and live-fire training environment, allowing the participating troops to practise coordination across significantly different battlefield conditions.

From Mountain Warfare at Auli to Precision Firepower at Mahajan

One of the defining features of Yudh Abhyas 2026 is the combination of two very different operational environments. At Auli, troops are training in mountainous terrain, while at Mahajan Field Firing Range, the focus includes live-fire and contemporary weapon-system demonstrations. This dual-location structure allows the two armies to examine how common procedures, communications, command relationships and battlefield coordination can function across different terrains.

The Indian Army has described the exercise as involving integrated training across mountainous and desert terrain, with activities ranging from small-arms firing and artillery engagements to long-range weapon systems and attack-helicopter operations. The training is being conducted through coordinated drills, synchronised battle procedures and combined-arms employment.

At Mahajan, the battlefield environment becomes particularly relevant to the exercise’s fire-support and technology-integration objectives. The range provides space for troops to demonstrate how different weapon systems and supporting capabilities can be coordinated within a larger operational framework.

M777, Dhanush and Pinaka Bring Firepower to the Exercise

The Mahajan component of Yudh Abhyas 2026 has featured a range of Indian artillery and rocket systems alongside other battlefield capabilities. Training has included the M777 Ultra-Light Howitzer, Dhanush artillery gun and Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher, providing a practical environment for the participating forces to understand fire-support procedures and coordinate battlefield effects. Recent drills at Mahajan have also involved L/70 air-defence guns and counter-unmanned aircraft capabilities.

The significance of this training goes beyond individual weapon systems. Modern battlefield operations increasingly depend on the ability of commanders and combat elements to identify targets, transmit accurate targeting information, coordinate fire missions and assess the results. Joint training therefore focuses not only on equipment but also on the procedures and communications required to bring different capabilities together.

The presence of both Indian and American soldiers during these drills enables the two forces to develop greater familiarity with each other’s equipment, tactical procedures and operational methods.

Counter-Drone Warfare Becomes a Major Focus

Another major component of the Mahajan training is the growing emphasis on counter-unmanned aircraft systems. Simulated drone attacks and swarms are being incorporated into training scenarios, reflecting the increasing role of unmanned systems in contemporary military operations.

The exercise has featured the Mobile Low, Slow, Small Unmanned Aircraft Integrated Defeat System, or M-LIDS, alongside Indian air-defence and other battlefield systems. The objective is to train personnel to detect, track and respond to unmanned aircraft threats as part of a layered battlefield response.

The counter-drone element is significant because modern military formations increasingly have to operate under persistent surveillance from low-cost unmanned systems. Integrating counter-UAS capabilities with artillery, air defence, intelligence and battlefield communications allows troops to practise responses to a threat that can emerge rapidly and from multiple directions.

Targeting, Fire Commands and Battlefield Coordination

One of the most important elements of the bilateral training involves the ability of Indian and US soldiers to work together through the complete targeting chain. Soldiers from both armies have been training to identify and plot targets, share targeting information and relay fire commands as part of integrated firing scenarios.

This process requires coordination between observation elements, target-acquisition teams, command posts and firing units. The objective is to ensure that information collected on the battlefield can be transformed into coordinated action through established procedures.

Such training is particularly important for interoperability because advanced weapon systems alone do not guarantee effective joint operations. Forces must also understand how information is generated, communicated, validated and acted upon. Yudh Abhyas provides the two armies with an opportunity to rehearse these processes together in a realistic field environment.

Attack Helicopters Add an Aviation Dimension

The Mahajan component has also incorporated an aviation dimension, with attack-helicopter operations forming part of the broader combined-arms training. Recent reporting from the exercise has highlighted integrated drills involving Apache attack helicopters, adding an additional layer to the battlefield scenario.

The integration of attack aviation with ground forces demonstrates the broader combined-arms approach being practised during the exercise. Ground formations, artillery, rocket systems, air-defence assets, unmanned systems and aviation elements can be required to operate within the same battlespace, making communication and timing critical to mission execution.

Technology Infusion at the Core of Yudh Abhyas 2026

Technology integration is one of the central themes of this year’s exercise. The Ministry of Defence has stated that the training includes the employment of drones and autonomous systems for surveillance and reconnaissance, along with demonstrations of contemporary weapon systems at the Mahajan Field Firing Range.

The exercise also provides an avenue for subject-matter experts from both armies to exchange views on emerging technologies and developments in multi-domain warfare. The official objective is not simply to display new equipment but to examine how evolving technologies can be incorporated into military planning, reconnaissance, targeting and coordinated operations.

This focus reflects the changing character of warfare, where traditional kinetic capabilities increasingly operate alongside unmanned systems, networked communications, sensors and other technology-enabled capabilities.

From Shared Training to Shared Capability

The Indian Army’s Additional Directorate General of Public Information has described the enhanced interoperability achieved during Yudh Abhyas 2026 as the result of integrated training across mountainous and desert terrain. The Army has highlighted coordinated drills, synchronised battle procedures and combined-arms employment as key elements of the exercise.

The broader objective is to develop mutual understanding and operational coordination while increasing the confidence of personnel from both armies in working together. The exercise provides a practical environment in which troops can compare tactics, techniques and procedures and develop a common understanding of battlefield coordination.

The Indian Army has characterised this progression as moving from shared training towards shared capability, underlining the emphasis on building practical interoperability rather than limiting cooperation to ceremonial or classroom-level engagement.

A High-Visibility Moment for India-US Defence Relations

Sergio Gor’s visit to Mahajan comes at a time when the India-US military relationship continues to involve increasingly complex exercises and exchanges. His direct observation of the field training placed diplomatic attention on the operational side of the relationship, with the US Ambassador seeing Indian and American soldiers operating together at one of India’s major field-training locations.

For the soldiers on the ground, however, the exercise remains centred on practical military objectives: communications, fire-support coordination, target acquisition, combined-arms procedures, counter-drone responses and the ability to function together under simulated battlefield conditions.

Gor’s comments on trust, readiness, interoperability and shared purpose therefore directly correspond with the operational themes being tested during the exercise.

Mahajan Field Firing Range: Desert Battlefield as a Laboratory for Joint Operations

The Mahajan Field Firing Range has emerged as a major venue for contemporary military training in western Rajasthan, offering a large desert environment for live-fire and combined-arms activities. During Yudh Abhyas 2026, the range has provided the setting for Indian and US troops to move beyond theoretical cooperation and conduct practical battlefield training.

The combination of artillery, rocket systems, air defence, counter-UAS capabilities, aviation and ground forces creates a complex training environment in which coordination becomes as important as individual firepower.

For the Indian and US contingents, the desert training at Mahajan complements the high-altitude and mountainous activities at Auli, allowing the exercise to test procedures across different operational environments.

Exercise Continues Until September 28

Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2026 is scheduled to continue until September 28. The remaining phase of the exercise will continue to provide opportunities for the two armies to conduct joint training, exchange operational experience and further develop interoperability through combined drills.

The exercise’s simultaneous conduct at Auli and Mahajan has given this year’s edition a distinctive operational profile, combining mountain warfare training with desert live-fire activities. With drones, autonomous systems, artillery, rocket systems, air defence and attack aviation forming part of the wider training framework, Yudh Abhyas 2026 is providing a broad platform for both armies to examine how traditional and emerging military capabilities can be integrated.

Sergio Gor’s visit to Mahajan Field Firing Range on September 24 has consequently become one of the prominent moments of the current exercise, with the US Ambassador witnessing the Indian and American forces train together and publicly highlighting trust, readiness, interoperability and shared purpose as key elements of the bilateral defence relationship.
