INDIA-UAE JOINT MILITARY EXERCISE ‘MOUNTAIN GUARDIAN 2026’ COMMENCES IN UTTARAKHAND, INDIA AND UAE ARMIES JOIN HANDS FOR ADVANCED MOUNTAIN WARFARE TRAINING

92 TROOPS FROM INDIA AND UAE PARTICIPATE IN THE 14-DAY BILATERAL EXERCISE

Chaubatia, Uttarakhand, 05 October 2026: The India-UAE Joint Military Exercise ‘MOUNTAIN GUARDIAN 2026’ commenced today at the Foreign Training Node, Chaubatia, Uttarakhand, marking another significant step in strengthening defence cooperation and military-to-military engagement between India and the United Arab Emirates. The bilateral exercise, being conducted from 05 October to 18 October 2026, brings together troops from the Indian Army and UAE Army for an intensive programme focused on mountain warfare, interoperability, tactical coordination and exchange of operational best practices. The exercise assumes particular importance as military operations in mountainous terrain demand specialised training, physical endurance, precise tactical planning, effective surveillance and the ability to operate in difficult terrain and rapidly changing battlefield conditions.

EQUAL REPRESENTATION FROM BOTH ARMIES REFLECTS DEEPENING DEFENCE PARTNERSHIP

A total of 92 personnel, with equal representation from the two participating armies, are taking part in Exercise MOUNTAIN GUARDIAN 2026. The Indian Army contingent comprises troops from a Bhairav Battalion, while the UAE Army contingent consists of personnel from a Mountain Infantry Battalion. The composition of the exercise reflects the emphasis being placed by both sides on developing practical battlefield interoperability rather than limiting cooperation to institutional or ceremonial engagement. Over the course of the exercise, Indian and UAE troops will train together, plan missions jointly, execute tactical drills and exchange their respective operational experiences, thereby developing a greater understanding of each other’s procedures, capabilities and methods of operating in challenging mountainous environments.

WOMEN OFFICERS AND COMBATANTS TAKE PART IN SPECIALIST ROLES

A notable feature of MOUNTAIN GUARDIAN 2026 is the participation of women officers and combatants from both the Indian and UAE Armies. Personnel from both sides are participating across specialist roles, highlighting the increasingly diverse and professional character of modern military forces. Their participation also provides an opportunity for the two armies to exchange experiences relating to specialised military duties, leadership, field operations and combat-support functions. The inclusion of women personnel in the exercise further underlines the broader evolution of military training and operational roles in both countries.

MOUNTAIN WARFARE AT THE CORE OF THE EXERCISE

The central focus of Exercise MOUNTAIN GUARDIAN 2026 is mountain warfare, one of the most demanding forms of military operations. Mountain environments impose severe physical and logistical challenges on troops, while terrain, altitude, weather, restricted mobility and limited lines of sight can significantly influence tactical decision-making. The exercise has therefore been designed to expose participating personnel to a broad range of operational situations in which troops must combine battlefield awareness, mobility, surveillance, firepower, endurance and coordinated action. Through realistic training scenarios, Indian and UAE troops will work towards developing a common understanding of the tactical challenges associated with mountainous terrain.

JOINT PLANNING AND TACTICAL DRILLS TO BUILD INTEROPERABILITY

During the exercise, troops from the two armies will undertake joint planning and tactical drills, allowing them to develop greater familiarity with each other’s operational procedures. Joint planning will provide the participating contingents an opportunity to understand how missions can be coordinated when personnel from different military establishments operate together. Tactical drills will focus on the practical application of battlefield procedures and decision-making in difficult terrain. The emphasis will remain on building interoperability through repeated joint training, communication and coordinated execution of assigned tasks.

FIRING PRACTICES AND FIELD TRAINING TO SHARPEN COMBAT READINESS

The training programme will also include firing practices and integrated field exercises, enabling troops to combine individual skills with collective tactical actions. Such training provides an important bridge between classroom-level understanding and battlefield execution, allowing personnel to practise procedures under realistic field conditions. The exercise will help participating soldiers enhance their confidence in tactical movement, weapon handling, coordination and mission execution while operating as part of a multinational force. The integration of firing and field training is expected to contribute towards improving combat readiness and tactical proficiency among the participating contingents.

SURVEILLANCE GRIDS AND DRONE OPERATIONS BRING TECHNOLOGY INTO MOUNTAIN WARFARE

Technology-enabled operations form another important component of MOUNTAIN GUARDIAN 2026, with troops undertaking training related to the establishment of surveillance grids and drone operations. Modern battlefields increasingly depend on persistent surveillance, rapid information gathering and the ability to detect activity across difficult terrain. In mountainous areas, where conventional observation can be restricted by ridgelines, valleys and other geographical features, unmanned aerial systems can provide valuable situational awareness. The exercise will therefore provide both armies an opportunity to exchange experiences and tactical practices related to the employment of drones and technology-enabled surveillance in challenging operational environments.

PHYSICAL ENDURANCE TRAINING TESTS THE LIMITS OF TROOPS IN DIFFICULT TERRAIN

Physical endurance will remain a critical component of the exercise, recognising that mountain warfare places extraordinary demands on soldiers. Participating troops will undergo physical endurance training designed to strengthen stamina, resilience and the ability to operate effectively over difficult terrain. Mountain operations often require soldiers to maintain combat effectiveness despite prolonged movement, steep gradients and demanding environmental conditions. The joint training will therefore allow personnel from both armies to learn from each other’s approaches to physical conditioning and battlefield endurance.

ROCK CLIMBING AND OBSTACLE TRAINING TO DEVELOP MOUNTAIN MOBILITY

As part of the specialised mountain warfare package, Indian and UAE troops will also undertake rock climbing and obstacle training. These activities are intended to improve physical confidence, agility, coordination and the ability to negotiate difficult terrain. Such skills can become operationally important when conventional routes are unavailable or when troops are required to move through rugged mountainous areas. Joint participation in these activities will also strengthen teamwork and mutual confidence between personnel from the two armies, while allowing both contingents to exchange practical techniques for overcoming natural and artificial obstacles.

INTEGRATED FIELD EXERCISES TO SIMULATE COMPLEX OPERATIONAL CONDITIONS

The exercise will culminate in a series of integrated field exercises designed to bring together the various capabilities and skills developed during the training programme. Joint field training allows troops to transition from individual and specialist activities to coordinated tactical operations involving personnel from both countries. These exercises are expected to test communication, planning, surveillance, mobility, tactical coordination and decision-making under simulated operational conditions. By working together in realistic scenarios, Indian and UAE soldiers will gain greater familiarity with each other’s capabilities and develop the confidence required for effective multinational military cooperation.

EXCHANGE OF TACTICS, TECHNIQUES AND PROCEDURES

A major objective of MOUNTAIN GUARDIAN 2026 is the exchange of Tactics, Techniques and Procedures (TTPs) relevant to mountain operations. Both India and the UAE have developed specialised military capabilities and training methodologies, and the exercise provides an important platform for professional interaction between their personnel. Through demonstrations, joint drills, discussions and field training, soldiers and commanders will be able to compare operational approaches and identify best practices that can contribute to greater effectiveness. Such exchanges are particularly valuable in multinational military exercises, where interoperability depends not only on equipment compatibility but also on a shared understanding of tactical procedures.

INDIA-UAE MILITARY COOPERATION GAINS A STRONGER OPERATIONAL DIMENSION

Exercise MOUNTAIN GUARDIAN 2026 represents another important layer in the expanding India-UAE defence partnership. Defence cooperation between the two countries has increasingly moved towards practical military engagement, professional exchanges and joint training. Exercises such as MOUNTAIN GUARDIAN provide the armed forces of both countries an opportunity to translate strategic friendship into operational-level cooperation. The interaction between Indian and UAE personnel at the tactical level contributes to a stronger understanding of each other’s military cultures, procedures and capabilities.

TRUST AND PROFESSIONAL BONDS BETWEEN THE TWO ARMIES

Beyond the tactical and operational objectives, the exercise is also expected to strengthen the bonds of friendship, mutual trust and professional camaraderie between Indian and UAE troops. Military exercises provide a unique environment in which personnel from different countries live, train and operate together, creating relationships that can contribute to long-term defence cooperation. The shared experience of demanding mountain training, joint tactical exercises and professional exchanges is expected to deepen the personal and institutional bonds between the two participating forces.

EXERCISE MOUNTAIN GUARDIAN 2026: A PLATFORM FOR FUTURE-READY MILITARY COOPERATION

With the integration of mountain warfare training, surveillance operations, drones, firing practices, physical endurance, rock climbing, obstacle training and integrated field exercises, Exercise MOUNTAIN GUARDIAN 2026 provides a comprehensive platform for developing modern military skills. The exercise reflects the changing nature of warfare, where traditional soldiering skills increasingly operate alongside technology-enabled surveillance and information-based decision-making. By combining combat training with professional exchanges and technological cooperation, the exercise seeks to prepare participating personnel for the complex operational challenges of contemporary battlefields.

INDIA AND UAE REINFORCE THEIR COMMITMENT TO STRATEGIC AND MILITARY PARTNERSHIP

The commencement of MOUNTAIN GUARDIAN 2026 at Chaubatia comes as a significant demonstration of the growing strategic convergence between India and the United Arab Emirates. Over the next two weeks, soldiers of the two armies will train side by side, exchange operational knowledge and develop greater interoperability while operating in the demanding mountain environment of Uttarakhand. The exercise is expected to enhance tactical proficiency, strengthen mutual understanding and provide valuable lessons for future bilateral military engagement. More importantly, it reinforces the shared commitment of India and the UAE to building a stronger, more professional and future-ready defence partnership based on cooperation, trust, interoperability and mutual respect.

Integrated Field Exercise

Tactics, Techniques and Procedures
