Indian Coast Guard Conducts High-Risk Airlift Operation Amid Cyclone Arnab, Rescues Six Stranded People in Odisha
Bhubaneswar, October 29, 2026: Demonstrating its operational readiness and humanitarian response capabilities, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) conducted a challenging aerial rescue operation in Odisha amid the impact of Cyclone Arnab, successfully evacuating six people stranded at a flood-hit healthcare facility in Ganjam district.
As the cyclone continued to affect India’s eastern coastline, the Indian Coast Guard Regional Headquarters (North East) placed its air and surface assets on high alert to support Search and Rescue (SAR) operations and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions.
The rescue operation was launched on the morning of October 29 after the Ganjam District Administration issued a distress call reporting people stranded at the heavily inundated Public Health Centre (PHC) in Jagmohan.
Responding swiftly, the Coast Guard Air Enclave in Bhubaneswar scrambled an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Mk-III to the affected location. Despite severe weather conditions and challenging flying circumstances, the helicopter crew successfully reached the flooded facility.
With floodwaters cutting off access to the healthcare centre, the aircrew executed a precision hover and carried out a winching operation to evacuate the stranded individuals. Six people were rescued, including two women, two children and one elderly person.
Following the successful evacuation, all six rescued individuals were airlifted and safely transferred to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Dharakote.
The operation highlighted the importance of helicopter-based rescue capabilities during natural disasters, particularly when flooding and adverse weather conditions make conventional evacuation routes inaccessible. The ALH Mk-III enabled the Coast Guard crew to reach the stranded individuals and extract them from the inundated area.
Meanwhile, the Indian Coast Guard has maintained heightened operational readiness across the region. Its aviation assets remain on standby for round-the-clock aerial surveillance, emergency evacuations and the air-dropping of essential relief supplies to communities isolated by the cyclone’s impact.
The operation underscores the Indian Coast Guard’s crucial role in disaster response, complementing its maritime security responsibilities with humanitarian assistance to civilians during emergencies.
As the situation develops, the Coast Guard remains prepared to support further rescue and relief operations in coordination with the relevant civil authorities.
