NEW DELHI: Demonstrating its operational readiness and growing capability to respond to complex maritime security threats across the Indian Ocean Region, the Indian Navy has successfully liberated the fishing vessel Azini from armed pirates off the northeastern coast of Somalia following an intensive operation spanning more than 48 hours. In a successful conclusion to the high-stakes maritime intervention, all 20 crew members aboard the hijacked vessel were rescued safely, with no casualties or injuries reported.

The operation showcased the Indian Navy’s ability to conduct coordinated maritime security missions far beyond India’s immediate coastal waters, combining persistent surveillance, naval deployment, precision tactical intervention and close coordination with the Indian Air Force. The participation of an IAF C-17 aircraft, which carried out a precision airdrop to augment Marine Commandos, added a significant inter-service dimension to the operation.

The fishing vessel Azini had reportedly been hijacked by an armed pirate group earlier last month off the northeastern coast of Somalia. The incident raised serious concerns over maritime security in the region, particularly because hijacked fishing vessels can potentially be converted into so-called mother ships, enabling pirates to operate farther from the coastline and launch attacks against merchant vessels.

The possibility of Azini being used as a mother ship represented a potential threat not only to commercial shipping but also to the wider maritime security environment in the western Indian Ocean. Merchant vessels operating through these waters form an important component of international trade, connecting major economic regions and carrying essential commodities, energy supplies and industrial cargo.

Recognising the seriousness of the situation, the Indian Navy initiated a coordinated response and tasked a mission-deployed warship to intervene. A maritime reconnaissance aircraft was also deployed in support of the operation, providing an important aerial surveillance component.

The naval and aerial platforms worked in close coordination to locate the hijacked vessel and maintain surveillance over its movements. Persistent monitoring helped establish the vessel’s position and track its activities while preventing the pirates from freely manoeuvring or escaping.

Over the course of the operation, the Indian Navy employed calibrated non-kinetic measures to contain the vessel’s movement and restrict its ability to evade interception. Such measures are particularly important in maritime counter-piracy operations, where the objective is to neutralise the threat while minimising risks to hostages and other personnel aboard the vessel.

The operation subsequently moved towards a decisive tactical intervention, with Indian Navy Marine Commandos brought into the mission. Their deployment was augmented through a precision airdrop conducted by an Indian Air Force C-17 strategic transport aircraft.

The involvement of the C-17 is particularly noteworthy because of the aircraft’s strategic airlift capabilities and its ability to transport specialised personnel and equipment over long distances. The precision airdrop provided additional support to the Marine Commandos, strengthening the operational response and enabling the forces to execute the intervention.

The Marine Commandos, operating as part of the coordinated naval response, carried out the tactical action to secure the fishing vessel and overcome the armed pirate threat. The intervention culminated in the successful liberation of Azini and the safe release of all 20 crew members.

Most importantly, the operation concluded without any reported casualties or injuries. Ensuring the safety of the hostages remained a critical consideration throughout the mission, given the risks associated with armed pirates operating in confined maritime environments.

The successful rescue represents another demonstration of the Indian Navy’s expanding role in maintaining maritime security and responding to emerging threats in the Indian Ocean Region. The operation also highlights the importance of combining naval power, aerial surveillance, strategic airlift and specialised commando capabilities in missions that require rapid response and precise coordination.

The northeastern coast of Somalia and the surrounding waters have historically witnessed piracy-related incidents, creating security challenges for international shipping. The broader western Indian Ocean remains strategically important because of its proximity to vital maritime trade routes connecting Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe.

Piracy in these waters can have consequences extending well beyond individual hijackings. Armed groups operating from hijacked vessels can threaten commercial shipping, endanger seafarers, disrupt maritime movement and increase security risks for international trade. Preventing hijacked vessels from being used as operational platforms is therefore an important element of maritime counter-piracy efforts.

The Azini operation highlights how the Indian Navy is prepared to respond to such situations through sustained deployment and coordinated military capabilities. Rather than relying on a single platform, the mission brought together a warship, a maritime reconnaissance aircraft, Marine Commandos and an Indian Air Force C-17 aircraft.

The operation also reinforces the significance of jointness between India’s armed forces. The coordination between the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force demonstrated how different military services can combine their specialised capabilities to address complex operational challenges in distant maritime areas.

For the Indian Navy, the successful rescue also carries strategic significance beyond the immediate liberation of the vessel. It sends a message that armed piracy and threats to civilian seafarers will receive a determined response, particularly when they threaten the safety of vessels and the stability of vital maritime corridors.

India has consistently projected itself as a net security provider and a first responder in the Indian Ocean Region. Its naval deployments, maritime surveillance activities and humanitarian assistance operations have contributed to strengthening regional maritime cooperation and confidence among partner nations.

The Indian Navy has reiterated its commitment to protecting seafarers, securing vital maritime trade routes and ensuring a safe, secure and stable maritime environment across the Indian Ocean Region.

The successful liberation of Azini, with all 20 crew members rescued unharmed, stands as a significant operational achievement. It demonstrates the importance of persistent surveillance, decisive action, specialised forces and seamless inter-service coordination in confronting maritime security threats.

At a time when piracy, geopolitical competition and threats to international shipping continue to challenge maritime security, the operation underlines India’s determination to safeguard freedom of navigation and protect lives at sea.

From surveillance in the open ocean to a precision commando intervention, the Azini operation reflects the Indian Navy’s commitment to ensuring that the Indian Ocean remains safe for seafarers and international maritime commerce.
