Jaipur to Kabul: India’s Lifesaving Humanitarian Touch with ‘Jaipur Foot’ Prosthetics for Afghans

In yet another testament to India’s unwavering commitment towards humanitarian causes, over 70 differently-abled people in war-torn Afghanistan have been given a new lease of life, thanks to India’s unique outreach initiative — the ‘Jaipur Foot’ camp, organised recently in Kabul.
The five-day camp, held in the Afghan capital by the globally renowned Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS) from Jaipur, saw around 75 prosthetic limbs successfully fitted to Afghan amputees, offering them not only physical rehabilitation but also renewed hope and dignity.
India’s Enduring Humanitarian Assistance to Afghanistan
The initiative was part of India’s ongoing humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, a nation grappling with decades of conflict, instability, and socio-economic crises. Despite political complexities, India has consistently prioritised the well-being of the Afghan people, focusing on healthcare, education, food security, infrastructure, and rehabilitation for those affected by violence and disability.
Sharing the heart-warming development, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal took to X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“As part of India’s ongoing humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan, a five-day Jaipur Foot camp was organised in Kabul by BMVSS, Jaipur. The camp saw an enthusiastic response, with around 75 prosthetic limbs successfully fitted.”
Photographs from the camp showed trained technicians from India fitting artificial limbs to amputees, many of whom had lost their limbs due to landmines, bomb blasts, or other violent incidents — a tragic reality of living in a conflict-ravaged nation like Afghanistan.
‘Jaipur Foot’: A Symbol of Indian Compassion and Innovation
The ‘Jaipur Foot’ is a globally acclaimed prosthetic limb designed and produced by BMVSS, headquartered in Rajasthan’s Jaipur city. Founded in the 1970s, BMVSS has been a pioneer in providing free-of-cost, high-quality, lightweight artificial limbs, calipers, wheelchairs, crutches, and other assistive devices to the differently-abled, especially in developing and conflict-hit regions.
What makes the ‘Jaipur Foot’ unique is its low-cost, durable, and easy-to-use design, enabling recipients to walk, run, squat, and even climb trees in rural areas — a functionality unmatched by many conventional prosthetics.
BMVSS’s outreach extends across the world. Over the past five decades, the organisation has conducted 111 prosthetic limb camps in 44 countries, including Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, Indonesia, and Namibia, rehabilitating lakhs of individuals and restoring their mobility and dignity.
Restoring Lives Amid Conflict: Afghanistan’s Grim Reality
Afghanistan has one of the highest numbers of amputees globally, primarily due to decades of war, landmines, and terror attacks. Thousands of civilians, including children, have lost their limbs, leaving them vulnerable, dependent, and often marginalised. In such a backdrop, India’s prosthetic limb camps are more than just medical interventions — they are powerful acts of compassion, enabling victims to reclaim independence and hope.
India’s initiatives in Afghanistan have always been people-centric, focusing on building infrastructure, providing scholarships, delivering food grains, running medical missions, and now, restoring mobility to amputees through the ‘Jaipur Foot’ programme.
Logistics Behind the Lifesaving Camps
According to BMVSS, each overseas camp requires meticulous planning. Technicians, doctors, equipment, and materials are flown to the destination, while bulky items often reach by sea routes. Temporary workshops are set up, sometimes in remote areas, where patients, identified with local assistance, receive customised artificial limbs, often within one to three days.
In the Kabul camp, this model was seamlessly implemented, thanks to the experience of BMVSS and support from Indian authorities.
Afghanistan’s Bond with Jaipur Foot: A History of Hope
Over the years, several Afghan leaders and diplomats have acknowledged and praised the Jaipur Foot initiative. Afghan amputees have travelled to Jaipur for prosthetic fittings, and India’s mobile camps have operated in different Afghan cities in the past, cementing the bond between the two nations beyond politics — rooted in empathy and shared humanity.
Global Recognition of BMVSS and India’s Soft Power
BMVSS’s work aligns with India’s broader vision of projecting ‘soft power’ through humanitarian diplomacy. From earthquake relief in Nepal to COVID-19 vaccine donations under ‘Vaccine Maitri’, and now prosthetic rehabilitation in Afghanistan, India has demonstrated its ability to combine technical expertise with compassion on the global stage.
The Jaipur Foot initiative, in particular, embodies the best of Indian innovation, charity, and global responsibility — reaffirming that India’s help transcends borders, faiths, and politics, reaching those most in need.

भारत ने एक बार फिर साबित कर दिया है कि मानवीय मदद की कोई सीमा नहीं होती। अफगानिस्तान के काबुल में आयोजित पांच दिवसीय ‘जयपुर फुट’ शिविर के जरिए भारत ने युद्धग्रस्त देश के 70 से अधिक विकलांगों को नई उम्मीद, आत्मविश्वास और एक सम्मानजनक जीवन की ओर लौटने का अवसर दिया।
यह शिविर राजस्थान स्थित प्रसिद्ध भगवान महावीर विकलांग सहायता समिति (BMVSS) द्वारा आयोजित किया गया, जो ‘जयपुर फुट’ के लिए दुनियाभर में प्रसिद्ध है।
MEA के प्रवक्ता रंधीर जायसवाल ने दी जानकारी
विदेश मंत्रालय (MEA) के प्रवक्ता रंधीर जायसवाल ने इस पहल की जानकारी देते हुए सोशल मीडिया प्लेटफॉर्म X पर लिखा:
“भारत की अफगानिस्तान के लोगों के प्रति जारी मानवीय सहायता के तहत, जयपुर BMVSS द्वारा काबुल में पांच दिवसीय जयपुर फुट शिविर आयोजित किया गया। शिविर को शानदार प्रतिक्रिया मिली, जिसमें लगभग 75 कृत्रिम अंग लगाए गए।”
शिविर की तस्वीरों में भारतीय विशेषज्ञों को अफगान amputees को कृत्रिम पैर लगाते देखा जा सकता है। कई लाभार्थी ऐसे थे जिन्होंने आतंकवादी हमलों, बारूदी सुरंगों या अन्य हिंसक घटनाओं में अपने अंग गंवाए थे।
‘जयपुर फुट’: भारतीय दया, नवाचार और उम्मीद का प्रतीक

अफगानिस्तान पिछले चार दशकों से लगातार युद्ध, आतंकवाद और अस्थिरता से जूझ रहा है। बारूदी सुरंगों और हमलों में हजारों लोग अपने हाथ-पैर गंवा चुके हैं। इन हालात में भारत की ओर से दिया गया ‘जयपुर फुट’ न केवल शारीरिक राहत बल्कि मानसिक संबल भी प्रदान करता है।
भारत लंबे समय से अफगानिस्तान में स्कूल, अस्पताल, बांध, सड़कों के निर्माण, खाद्यान्न वितरण, छात्रवृत्ति, चिकित्सा सहायता और अब कृत्रिम अंगों की सुविधा जैसे जनकल्याणकारी कार्य करता रहा है।
अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर सराहना
‘जयपुर फुट’ भारत की सॉफ्ट पावर का जीवंत उदाहरण बन चुका है। BMVSS का कार्य संयुक्त राष्ट्र सहित कई अंतरराष्ट्रीय मंचों पर सराहा जा चुका है। यह न केवल तकनीकी दक्षता बल्कि भारत की करुणा और जिम्मेदारी का परिचायक है।
भारत द्वारा अफगानिस्तान में आयोजित यह शिविर दोनों देशों के संबंधों को मजबूत करने, पीड़ित मानवता के प्रति भारत की प्रतिबद्धता और जरूरतमंदों के जीवन में बदलाव लाने का प्रतीक बन गया है।
भारत की सोच: मदद सीमाओं से परे
भले ही अफगानिस्तान की राजनीतिक स्थिति जटिल हो, लेकिन भारत ने हमेशा यह स्पष्ट किया है कि उसकी मदद वहां की आम जनता के लिए है। ‘जयपुर फुट’ शिविर इसी सोच का सशक्त उदाहरण है कि भारत मदद, राहत और पुनर्वास के लिए कभी पीछे नहीं हटता।
