KAZIND-2026: 60-Member Indian Armed Forces Contingent Departs for Kazakhstan as India and Kazakhstan Prepare for Joint Counter-Terrorism Operations
Indian Contingent Heads to Oskemen for Ninth Edition of KAZIND
A 60-member contingent of the Indian Armed Forces has departed for Oskemen, Kazakhstan, to participate in the ninth edition of the India–Kazakhstan Joint Military Exercise KAZIND-2026, scheduled to be conducted from 28 September to 11 October 2026. The exercise represents another important step in strengthening military-to-military cooperation between India and Kazakhstan, with both sides preparing to undertake specialised training focused on joint counter-terrorism operations in a sub-conventional environment under a United Nations mandate. The Indian contingent is drawn primarily from a battalion of the Garhwal Rifles, supported by personnel from other arms and services as well as the Indian Air Force, bringing together capabilities required for complex joint operations involving land forces, air mobility, intelligence, surveillance and unmanned systems.
Indian Army and Air Force Elements to Train Alongside Kazakhstan’s Land Forces
The Indian contingent will train alongside a Kazakhstan Armed Forces contingent of matching strength, primarily comprising personnel from the country’s Land Forces. The composition of the two contingents is intended to facilitate realistic joint training and provide both sides with an opportunity to understand each other’s operational procedures, command structures and tactical approaches. The participation of Indian Air Force personnel adds an important air component to the exercise, particularly in areas such as air mobility and the employment of aviation assets during counter-terrorism operations. By bringing together personnel from different arms and services, KAZIND-2026 is designed to move beyond conventional infantry training and develop an integrated approach to operations in challenging terrain and complex security environments.
Joint Counter-Terrorism Operations Form the Core of KAZIND-2026
At the heart of KAZIND-2026 will be Joint Counter-Terrorism operations in a sub-conventional environment, conducted in accordance with a United Nations mandate. The exercise will focus on developing interoperability between the participating forces so that Indian and Kazakh troops can operate together effectively during a simulated security crisis. The training will involve the planning and execution of coordinated missions against a simulated terrorist threat, requiring troops to integrate intelligence, manoeuvre, surveillance, firepower, mobility and command-and-control capabilities. Such exercises provide participating forces with an opportunity to rehearse procedures in a controlled environment before applying them during the final validation phase.
Semi-Urban and Mountainous Terrain to Test Operational Adaptability
A major focus of the exercise will be operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrain, environments that can impose significant challenges on military forces. Mountainous terrain can restrict movement, complicate communications and observation, and place additional demands on logistics and air mobility, while semi-urban environments can create complex operational situations requiring careful coordination and precise tactical execution. KAZIND-2026 will therefore emphasise joint planning and execution, allowing both contingents to practise how forces from different military establishments can coordinate their actions in difficult operational conditions. The training will seek to improve the ability of troops to rapidly adapt their tactics while maintaining effective command and control.
Air Mobility and Special Heliborne Operations to Feature Prominently
Air mobility will form another important component of KAZIND-2026. The exercise will provide participating troops an opportunity to train in operations where military forces and equipment may need to be rapidly repositioned using air assets. Among the activities planned is training related to Special Heliborne Operations, along with the securing of helipads and landing sites. These drills are designed to strengthen coordination between ground troops and aviation elements, particularly during missions where speed, mobility and the ability to establish secure landing zones are critical. The participation of Indian Air Force personnel is expected to support the joint nature of this training and contribute to a more integrated operational approach.
Drones and Counter-Drone Capabilities Become Part of the Joint Battlefield
KAZIND-2026 will also place emphasis on the integrated employment of Unmanned Aerial Systems and Counter-UAS capabilities, reflecting the growing role of unmanned technology in contemporary military operations. Unmanned aerial systems can provide forces with surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities, enabling commanders and troops to develop greater situational awareness during operations. At the same time, the proliferation of drones has created the requirement for effective counter-UAS capabilities capable of identifying and responding to hostile or unauthorised unmanned systems. By incorporating both UAS and Counter-UAS training into the exercise, the participating forces will have an opportunity to develop procedures for operating in an environment where unmanned systems can influence battlefield awareness and tactical decision-making.
Raids, Search-and-Destroy Missions and Cordon-and-Search Operations
The practical training programme will include a range of counter-terrorism activities designed to replicate operational situations involving terrorist threats. Indian and Kazakh troops will jointly rehearse raids, search-and-destroy missions and cordon-and-search operations, requiring close coordination between participating elements. Such activities will involve the identification of objectives, planning of missions, movement of troops, establishment of security measures and execution of coordinated actions against simulated threats. Cordon-and-search training will also focus on controlling an operational area while conducting systematic searches, whereas raids and search-and-destroy missions will test the ability of troops to plan and execute targeted operations against simulated hostile elements.
Joint Command Post to Strengthen Combined Operational Planning
An important feature of KAZIND-2026 will be the establishment of a Joint Command Post, which will serve as a mechanism for coordinated planning and execution between the two participating forces. A joint command structure can help troops from different military systems understand how information is shared, how operational decisions are coordinated and how missions are synchronised. The exercise will provide both sides with practical experience in developing a common operational picture and coordinating actions across different elements. Such interoperability is particularly important during multinational operations, where differences in communication procedures, organisational structures and operational methods can otherwise create challenges.
Intelligence and Surveillance Centre to Support the Joint Force
Alongside the Joint Command Post, an Intelligence and Surveillance Centre will be established during the exercise. The centre will support coordinated planning by facilitating the integration and assessment of information relevant to the simulated operational environment. Intelligence and surveillance are fundamental to counter-terrorism operations because commanders require accurate and timely information to understand the threat, identify potential targets and plan appropriate responses. The inclusion of an Intelligence and Surveillance Centre in KAZIND-2026 reflects the exercise’s emphasis on information-driven operations and the integration of intelligence into tactical decision-making.
Training to Culminate in a Comprehensive Validation Exercise
The training programme will culminate in a comprehensive validation exercise, during which Indian and Kazakh contingents will jointly apply the tactics, techniques and procedures rehearsed throughout the exercise. The final phase will involve a simulated terrorist threat designed to test the ability of both contingents to operate together under a common operational framework. The validation phase will provide an opportunity to assess the level of interoperability achieved during the exercise and determine how effectively troops can translate individual training activities into a coordinated joint operation.
KAZIND-2026 to Strengthen India-Kazakhstan Military Cooperation
Beyond tactical training, KAZIND-2026 carries a broader significance for India-Kazakhstan defence cooperation. Joint exercises provide armed forces with opportunities to establish professional relationships, exchange operational experiences and develop mutual familiarity between personnel. Repeated interaction in a structured training environment can contribute to greater mutual trust and understanding, particularly when troops are required to operate together during complex scenarios. KAZIND has therefore become an important platform for strengthening military-to-military engagement between the two countries.
Operational Experience and Lessons from Two Different Military Forces
The exercise will also allow Indian and Kazakh personnel to learn from each other’s operational experience. Both contingents will bring their own approaches to planning, training and execution, providing an environment for professional exchange. The interaction will extend beyond formal tactical drills, with troops expected to develop a better understanding of each other’s procedures and capabilities through combined training. Such exchanges can contribute to the development of practical interoperability while strengthening professional bonds among participating personnel.
Regional Peace, Stability and Collective Security Remain a Shared Objective
KAZIND-2026 is ultimately aimed at reinforcing the shared commitment of India and Kazakhstan towards regional peace, stability and collective security. Through joint counter-terrorism training, both countries are seeking to strengthen their ability to respond collectively to simulated security challenges while deepening defence cooperation. The exercise also provides a platform for maintaining regular engagement between the armed forces of the two nations and strengthening the professional relationship between their military personnel.
With the Indian contingent now deployed for the ninth edition of KAZIND, the exercise in Oskemen will bring together soldiers and air personnel from India and Kazakhstan for nearly two weeks of intensive joint training. From mountainous and semi-urban operations to air mobility, helipad security, special heliborne operations, drone employment, counter-drone measures, intelligence and surveillance, the exercise is structured around a broad spectrum of contemporary counter-terrorism capabilities. The concluding validation exercise will provide the final test of the interoperability and joint operational procedures developed during the training, while the wider engagement is expected to further strengthen military cooperation and mutual trust between India and Kazakhstan.

ओस्केमेन में शुरू होगा भारत-कजाकिस्तान संयुक्त सैन्य अभ्यास का नौवां संस्करण
भारत और कजाकिस्तान के बीच सैन्य सहयोग को और मजबूत करने की दिशा में एक महत्वपूर्ण कदम के तहत भारतीय सशस्त्र बलों का 60 सदस्यीय दल कजाकिस्तान के ओस्केमेन के लिए रवाना हो गया है। यह दल 28 सितंबर से 11 अक्टूबर 2026 तक आयोजित होने वाले भारत-कजाकिस्तान संयुक्त सैन्य अभ्यास KAZIND-2026 के नौवें संस्करण में हिस्सा लेगा। अभ्यास का मुख्य उद्देश्य दोनों देशों की सेनाओं के बीच ऑपरेशनल इंटरऑपरेबिलिटी बढ़ाना और संयुक्त राष्ट्र के जनादेश के तहत सब-कन्वेंशनल वातावरण में संयुक्त आतंकवाद विरोधी अभियानों को अंजाम देने की क्षमता को मजबूत करना है। भारतीय दल में मुख्य रूप से गढ़वाल राइफल्स की एक बटालियन के सैनिक शामिल हैं, जबकि अन्य आर्म्स और सर्विसेज के जवानों के साथ भारतीय वायु सेना के कार्मिक भी इस अभ्यास में हिस्सा ले रहे हैं।
भारतीय सेना और वायुसेना के जवान कजाकिस्तान की लैंड फोर्सेज के साथ करेंगे प्रशिक्षण
KAZIND-2026 में भारतीय दल के साथ कजाकिस्तान सशस्त्र बलों की समान संख्या वाली टुकड़ी हिस्सा लेगी, जिसमें मुख्य रूप से उसके लैंड फोर्सेज के सैनिक शामिल होंगे। दोनों देशों के दलों की समान ताकत और संयुक्त प्रशिक्षण व्यवस्था का उद्देश्य सैनिकों को एक-दूसरे की ऑपरेशनल प्रक्रियाओं, कमांड सिस्टम और सामरिक तरीकों को समझने का अवसर देना है। भारतीय वायुसेना के जवानों की भागीदारी इस अभ्यास में एयर मोबिलिटी और ग्राउंड फोर्सेज के साथ वायु तत्वों के बेहतर समन्वय को भी महत्वपूर्ण बनाती है। इस तरह KAZIND-2026 केवल पैदल सेना आधारित प्रशिक्षण तक सीमित नहीं रहेगा, बल्कि इसमें थल, वायु, इंटेलिजेंस, सर्विलांस और मानव रहित प्रणालियों को एकीकृत करते हुए संयुक्त ऑपरेशनल क्षमता विकसित करने पर जोर रहेगा।
संयुक्त आतंकवाद विरोधी अभियान होंगे अभ्यास का मुख्य केंद्र
KAZIND-2026 का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण फोकस सब-कन्वेंशनल वातावरण में संयुक्त आतंकवाद विरोधी अभियान होंगे। यह प्रशिक्षण संयुक्त राष्ट्र के जनादेश के अनुरूप आयोजित किया जाएगा। अभ्यास के दौरान भारतीय और कजाकिस्तानी सैनिकों को एक साझा सुरक्षा संकट की स्थिति में एक साथ काम करने की प्रक्रियाओं का अभ्यास कराया जाएगा। इसमें इंटेलिजेंस, सर्विलांस, सैन्य गतिशीलता, कमांड एंड कंट्रोल तथा ऑपरेशनल प्लानिंग को एकीकृत करते हुए एक सिम्युलेटेड आतंकवादी खतरे के खिलाफ संयुक्त कार्रवाई का अभ्यास किया जाएगा। इस प्रकार के संयुक्त सैन्य अभ्यास दोनों देशों की सेनाओं को वास्तविक परिस्थितियों से पहले नियंत्रित वातावरण में अपनी प्रक्रियाओं को परखने का अवसर देते हैं।
सेमी-अर्बन और पहाड़ी इलाकों में होगी कठिन ऑपरेशनल ट्रेनिंग
KAZIND-2026 में सेमी-अर्बन और पहाड़ी इलाकों में संयुक्त अभियानों पर विशेष जोर रहेगा। पहाड़ी क्षेत्र सैन्य अभियानों के दौरान सैनिकों की आवाजाही, संचार, निगरानी और लॉजिस्टिक्स के लिए अतिरिक्त चुनौतियां पैदा करते हैं, जबकि सेमी-अर्बन वातावरण में सैन्य बलों को जटिल और सीमित क्षेत्र में सावधानीपूर्वक ऑपरेशन संचालित करने पड़ सकते हैं। इसी वजह से अभ्यास में संयुक्त योजना और संयुक्त कार्रवाई को विशेष महत्व दिया गया है। दोनों देशों के सैनिक कठिन भूभाग में एक-दूसरे के साथ तालमेल बनाते हुए मिशन प्लानिंग, सैनिकों की तैनाती और ऑपरेशन के दौरान कमांड एंड कंट्रोल की प्रक्रियाओं का अभ्यास करेंगे।
एयर मोबिलिटी और स्पेशल हेलिबोर्न ऑपरेशंस पर भी रहेगा फोकस
KAZIND-2026 में एयर मोबिलिटी एक महत्वपूर्ण प्रशिक्षण क्षेत्र होगा। ऐसे अभियानों में सैनिकों और आवश्यक सैन्य संसाधनों को तेजी से एक स्थान से दूसरे स्थान तक पहुंचाने के लिए हवाई माध्यमों का इस्तेमाल किया जाता है। अभ्यास के दौरान हेलिपैड और लैंडिंग साइट्स को सुरक्षित करने के साथ-साथ Special Heliborne Operations का भी प्रशिक्षण दिया जाएगा। इन गतिविधियों का उद्देश्य ग्राउंड फोर्सेज और एविएशन एलिमेंट्स के बीच बेहतर समन्वय विकसित करना है, ताकि आवश्यकता पड़ने पर सैनिकों को तेजी से निर्धारित क्षेत्र में पहुंचाया जा सके और सुरक्षित लैंडिंग जोन स्थापित किए जा सकें।
ड्रोन और काउंटर-ड्रोन सिस्टम भी होंगे संयुक्त प्रशिक्षण का हिस्सा
आधुनिक युद्धक्षेत्र में तेजी से बढ़ती ड्रोन तकनीक को देखते हुए KAZIND-2026 में Unmanned Aerial Systems यानी UAS और Counter-UAS क्षमताओं के एकीकृत इस्तेमाल पर भी जोर दिया जाएगा। ड्रोन का इस्तेमाल सर्विलांस और रिकॉनिसेंस के लिए किया जा सकता है, जिससे ऑपरेशन में तैनात कमांडरों और सैनिकों को इलाके की बेहतर स्थिति संबंधी जानकारी मिलती है। वहीं, ड्रोन के बढ़ते इस्तेमाल के कारण Counter-UAS क्षमताएं भी आधुनिक सैन्य अभियानों का महत्वपूर्ण हिस्सा बन गई हैं। अभ्यास में दोनों देशों के सैनिकों को ऐसे वातावरण में काम करने का प्रशिक्षण मिलेगा जहां मानव रहित प्रणालियां निगरानी, जानकारी जुटाने और ऑपरेशनल निर्णयों को प्रभावित कर सकती हैं।
रेड, सर्च एंड डेस्ट्रॉय और कॉर्डन एंड सर्च ऑपरेशन का अभ्यास
संयुक्त प्रशिक्षण के दौरान भारतीय और कजाकिस्तानी सैनिक रेड, सर्च एंड डेस्ट्रॉय मिशन और कॉर्डन एंड सर्च ऑपरेशन जैसी गतिविधियों का अभ्यास करेंगे। इन अभियानों में लक्ष्य की पहचान, मिशन प्लानिंग, सैनिकों की आवाजाही, क्षेत्र की सुरक्षा और समन्वित कार्रवाई जैसे महत्वपूर्ण पहलुओं को शामिल किया जाएगा। कॉर्डन एंड सर्च ऑपरेशन के दौरान किसी निर्धारित क्षेत्र को सुरक्षित घेरे में लेकर व्यवस्थित तलाशी की प्रक्रिया का अभ्यास किया जाएगा, जबकि रेड और सर्च एंड डेस्ट्रॉय मिशन सैनिकों की लक्षित कार्रवाई और सामरिक समन्वय की क्षमता को परखेंगे। इन सभी गतिविधियों का उद्देश्य संयुक्त ऑपरेशन के दौरान दोनों सेनाओं के बीच बेहतर तालमेल स्थापित करना है।
जॉइंट कमांड पोस्ट से मजबूत होगी संयुक्त ऑपरेशनल प्लानिंग
KAZIND-2026 की एक प्रमुख विशेषता Joint Command Post की स्थापना होगी। यह संयुक्त कमांड पोस्ट दोनों देशों की सेनाओं के बीच ऑपरेशनल प्लानिंग और कार्रवाई के समन्वय के लिए महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाएगा। अलग-अलग सैन्य संगठनों से आने वाले सैनिकों के लिए एक साझा कमांड वातावरण में काम करना इंटरऑपरेबिलिटी की महत्वपूर्ण परीक्षा होती है। संयुक्त कमांड पोस्ट के माध्यम से दोनों देशों के सैन्यकर्मी सूचनाओं के आदान-प्रदान, मिशन प्लानिंग, निर्णय प्रक्रिया और ऑपरेशनल गतिविधियों के समन्वय का व्यावहारिक अनुभव हासिल करेंगे।
इंटेलिजेंस एंड सर्विलांस सेंटर से मिलेगी ऑपरेशन को सूचना आधारित ताकत
अभ्यास के दौरान एक Intelligence and Surveillance Centre भी स्थापित किया जाएगा। इसका उद्देश्य ऑपरेशनल वातावरण से संबंधित सूचनाओं को एकत्रित करने, उनका आकलन करने और संयुक्त योजना में इस्तेमाल करने की प्रक्रिया को मजबूत करना होगा। आतंकवाद विरोधी अभियानों में इंटेलिजेंस और सर्विलांस की भूमिका बेहद महत्वपूर्ण होती है, क्योंकि कमांडरों को किसी भी कार्रवाई से पहले खतरे, संभावित लक्ष्य और इलाके की स्थिति से संबंधित सटीक जानकारी की आवश्यकता होती है। KAZIND-2026 में इस सेंटर की स्थापना यह दर्शाती है कि संयुक्त सैन्य अभियान में इंटेलिजेंस को किस तरह सामरिक निर्णय प्रक्रिया से जोड़ा जा सकता है।
अंतिम चरण में होगा व्यापक वैलिडेशन एक्सरसाइज
अभ्यास के प्रशिक्षण चरण का समापन Comprehensive Validation Exercise के साथ होगा। इस अंतिम चरण में भारतीय और कजाकिस्तानी सैनिक पूरे अभ्यास के दौरान अभ्यास की गई रणनीति, तकनीक और प्रक्रियाओं को एक साथ लागू करेंगे। एक सिम्युलेटेड आतंकवादी खतरे के खिलाफ दोनों देशों की टुकड़ियां संयुक्त रूप से कार्रवाई करेंगी और यह परखा जाएगा कि उन्होंने प्रशिक्षण के दौरान विकसित की गई इंटरऑपरेबिलिटी और संयुक्त ऑपरेशनल प्रक्रियाओं को वास्तविक जैसी परिस्थिति में कितनी प्रभावी ढंग से लागू किया है। यह वैलिडेशन एक्सरसाइज पूरे अभ्यास का महत्वपूर्ण परीक्षण चरण होगा।
भारत-कजाकिस्तान सैन्य संबंधों को मिलेगी नई मजबूती
KAZIND-2026 केवल एक सैन्य प्रशिक्षण गतिविधि नहीं है, बल्कि यह भारत और कजाकिस्तान के बीच सैन्य सहयोग को मजबूत करने वाला महत्वपूर्ण प्लेटफॉर्म भी है। संयुक्त अभ्यास दोनों देशों के सैन्यकर्मियों को एक-दूसरे की ऑपरेशनल प्रक्रियाओं और अनुभवों को समझने का अवसर प्रदान करता है। लगातार संयुक्त प्रशिक्षण से सैनिकों के बीच पेशेवर संबंध मजबूत होते हैं और भविष्य में किसी बहुराष्ट्रीय या संयुक्त ऑपरेशन के दौरान एक-दूसरे के साथ काम करने की समझ विकसित होती है।
दोनों सेनाओं के ऑपरेशनल अनुभवों का होगा आदान-प्रदान
अभ्यास के दौरान भारतीय और कजाकिस्तानी सैनिक अपने-अपने ऑपरेशनल अनुभव, सामरिक प्रक्रियाएं और प्रशिक्षण पद्धतियां साझा करेंगे। दोनों देशों की सेनाओं के लिए यह एक-दूसरे की क्षमताओं और कार्यप्रणाली को करीब से समझने का अवसर होगा। प्रशिक्षण के दौरान केवल औपचारिक सैन्य ड्रिल ही नहीं, बल्कि संयुक्त गतिविधियों के जरिए दोनों देशों के सैनिक एक-दूसरे के साथ काम करने की व्यावहारिक क्षमता विकसित करेंगे। इससे भविष्य के संयुक्त अभियानों के लिए प्रोफेशनल बॉन्डिंग और आपसी विश्वास को मजबूत करने में मदद मिलेगी।
क्षेत्रीय शांति, स्थिरता और सामूहिक सुरक्षा के लिए साझा प्रतिबद्धता
KAZIND-2026 का व्यापक उद्देश्य क्षेत्रीय शांति, स्थिरता और सामूहिक सुरक्षा के प्रति भारत और कजाकिस्तान की साझा प्रतिबद्धता को मजबूत करना है। आतंकवाद के खिलाफ संयुक्त प्रशिक्षण के माध्यम से दोनों देश अपने सैन्य बलों की सामूहिक प्रतिक्रिया क्षमता को बेहतर करने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं। इसके साथ ही नियमित सैन्य अभ्यास दोनों देशों के बीच रक्षा संबंधों और सैन्य-से-सैन्य संवाद को लगातार मजबूत करने का माध्यम भी बन रहे हैं।
