Prior to becoming Vice Chief, he was General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Central Command, one of the Army’s most important operational commands. लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल एन.एस. राजा सुब्रमणि बने भारत के नए चीफ ऑफ डिफेंस स्टाफ, सैन्य सुधारों और संयुक्त युद्धक क्षमता के नए युग की शुरुआत
चार दशक तक देश की सेवा करने वाले अनुभवी सैन्य अधिकारी को मिली भारतीय सशस्त्र बलों की सर्वोच्च जिम्मेदारी
भारत सरकार ने देश की सैन्य नेतृत्व संरचना में एक अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण निर्णय लेते हुए लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल एन.एस. राजा सुब्रमणि (सेवानिवृत्त), पीवीएसएम, एवीएसएम, एसएम, वीएसएम को भारत का नया चीफ ऑफ डिफेंस स्टाफ (सीडीएस) नियुक्त किया है। वह पदभार ग्रहण करने की तिथि से भारत सरकार के रक्षा मंत्रालय के अंतर्गत सैन्य कार्य विभाग (डिपार्टमेंट ऑफ मिलिट्री अफेयर्स) के सचिव के रूप में भी कार्य करेंगे। यह नियुक्ति ऐसे समय पर हुई है जब भारत अपनी सैन्य क्षमताओं को तकनीकी रूप से अधिक उन्नत, अधिक समन्वित और भविष्य के युद्धों के अनुरूप ढालने की दिशा में तेजी से आगे बढ़ रहा है।

राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा परिषद सचिवालय में सैन्य सलाहकार के रूप में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका
लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल राजा सुब्रमणि 1 सितंबर 2025 से राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा परिषद सचिवालय में सैन्य सलाहकार के रूप में कार्यरत थे। इस पद पर रहते हुए उन्होंने राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा सलाहकार और केंद्र सरकार के शीर्ष नीति निर्माताओं को सीमा सुरक्षा, सामरिक संतुलन, सैन्य आधुनिकीकरण और क्षेत्रीय भू-राजनीतिक घटनाक्रमों पर सलाह दी।
राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा परिषद सचिवालय में उनकी भूमिका ने उन्हें भारत की व्यापक राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा संरचना और राजनीतिक-सैन्य निर्णय प्रक्रिया को निकट से समझने का अवसर दिया। यह अनुभव उन्हें सीडीएस के रूप में और भी अधिक प्रभावी बनाएगा।
उप सेना प्रमुख और मध्य कमान के सेनाध्यक्ष के रूप में उत्कृष्ट कार्यकाल
सीडीएस नियुक्त होने से पहले लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल राजा सुब्रमणि 1 जुलाई 2024 से 31 जुलाई 2025 तक भारतीय सेना के उप सेना प्रमुख (Vice Chief of Army Staff) रहे। इस दौरान उन्होंने सेना के आधुनिकीकरण, हथियारों की खरीद, परिचालन तैयारियों और मानव संसाधन प्रबंधन जैसे महत्वपूर्ण क्षेत्रों का नेतृत्व किया।
इसके पूर्व वह मार्च 2023 से जून 2024 तक मध्य कमान के जनरल ऑफिसर कमांडिंग-इन-चीफ रहे। मध्य कमान भारतीय सेना की सबसे महत्वपूर्ण कमानों में से एक है, जो रणनीतिक रिजर्व, रसद सहायता और उत्तरी सीमाओं की तैयारियों में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाती है।
राष्ट्रीय रक्षा अकादमी से लेकर देश के सर्वोच्च सैन्य पद तक का प्रेरक सफर
लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल राजा सुब्रमणि राष्ट्रीय रक्षा अकादमी (एनडीए) और भारतीय सैन्य अकादमी (आईएमए) के पूर्व छात्र हैं। उन्हें 14 दिसंबर 1985 को भारतीय सेना की प्रतिष्ठित 8वीं बटालियन, गढ़वाल राइफल्स में कमीशन मिला था।
गढ़वाल राइफल्स भारतीय सेना की सबसे गौरवशाली रेजीमेंटों में से एक है। इसी रेजीमेंट से सैन्य जीवन की शुरुआत कर उन्होंने अपनी योग्यता, नेतृत्व क्षमता और समर्पण के बल पर देश के सर्वोच्च सैन्य पद तक का सफर तय किया।
उच्च शिक्षा और वैश्विक सैन्य अध्ययन का गहरा अनुभव
लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल राजा सुब्रमणि केवल एक युद्धक कमांडर ही नहीं बल्कि एक उच्च शिक्षित सैन्य रणनीतिकार भी हैं। वह यूनाइटेड किंगडम के ब्रैकनेल स्थित ज्वाइंट सर्विसेज कमांड एंड स्टाफ कॉलेज के पूर्व छात्र हैं। इसके अलावा उन्होंने नई दिल्ली स्थित राष्ट्रीय रक्षा कॉलेज से भी उच्च सैन्य अध्ययन किया है।
उन्होंने लंदन के किंग्स कॉलेज से मास्टर ऑफ आर्ट्स की डिग्री प्राप्त की तथा मद्रास विश्वविद्यालय से डिफेंस स्टडीज में एम.फिल. किया। यह शैक्षणिक पृष्ठभूमि उन्हें आधुनिक युद्ध, भू-राजनीति और रक्षा नीति के गहन विश्लेषण की क्षमता प्रदान करती है।
ऑपरेशन राइनो से लेकर पश्चिमी मोर्चे की स्ट्राइक कोर तक शानदार कमान अनुभव
लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल राजा सुब्रमणि ने अपने सैन्य जीवन में कई महत्वपूर्ण फॉर्मेशनों की कमान संभाली। उन्होंने असम में ऑपरेशन राइनो के दौरान 16 गढ़वाल राइफल्स की कमान संभाली और उग्रवाद विरोधी अभियानों का सफल नेतृत्व किया।
इसके बाद उन्होंने जम्मू-कश्मीर में 168 इन्फैंट्री ब्रिगेड की कमान संभाली, जहां आतंकवाद और सीमा पार घुसपैठ से निपटना बड़ी चुनौती थी।
उन्होंने केंद्रीय सेक्टर में 17 माउंटेन डिवीजन की कमान भी संभाली, जो चीन सीमा पर भारत की रक्षा में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाती है।
उनकी सबसे प्रतिष्ठित कमान 2 कोर की रही, जिसे भारतीय सेना की प्रमुख स्ट्राइक कोर माना जाता है। पश्चिमी मोर्चे पर स्थित यह कोर पाकिस्तान के विरुद्ध भारत की आक्रामक पारंपरिक सैन्य क्षमता का प्रमुख आधार है।
सैन्य खुफिया, कूटनीति और प्रशिक्षण में भी व्यापक अनुभव
लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल राजा सुब्रमणि ने अनेक महत्वपूर्ण स्टाफ और इंस्ट्रक्शनल नियुक्तियों में भी कार्य किया। इनमें कजाकिस्तान में रक्षा अताशे, सैन्य सचिव शाखा में असिस्टेंट मिलिट्री सेक्रेटरी, सैन्य खुफिया निदेशालय में डिप्टी डायरेक्टर जनरल, पूर्वी कमान में ब्रिगेडियर जनरल स्टाफ (ऑपरेशंस), डिफेंस सर्विसेज स्टाफ कॉलेज वेलिंगटन में चीफ इंस्ट्रक्टर (आर्मी) तथा उत्तरी कमान में चीफ ऑफ स्टाफ जैसे पद शामिल हैं।
इन भूमिकाओं ने उन्हें सैन्य कूटनीति, खुफिया समन्वय, प्रशिक्षण और रणनीतिक संचालन की गहरी समझ प्रदान की।
चीन और पाकिस्तान दोनों मोर्चों पर गहरी समझ
भारत की सुरक्षा चुनौतियों के केंद्र में दो प्रमुख मोर्चे हैं—उत्तरी सीमा पर चीन और पश्चिमी सीमा पर पाकिस्तान। लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल राजा सुब्रमणि उन कुछ वरिष्ठ अधिकारियों में शामिल हैं जिनके पास दोनों मोर्चों पर प्रत्यक्ष परिचालन अनुभव है।

भारत के पहले सीडीएस जनरल बिपिन रावत ने इस पद की नींव रखी और संयुक्त सैन्य सुधारों का एजेंडा शुरू किया। उनके निधन के बाद जनरल अनिल चौहान ने इस प्रक्रिया को आगे बढ़ाया और थिएटर कमांड तथा तकनीकी आधुनिकीकरण को नई गति दी।
अब लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल राजा सुब्रमणि के सामने इस अधूरे एजेंडे को निर्णायक रूप से आगे बढ़ाने की जिम्मेदारी होगी।
नए सीडीएस के सामने सबसे बड़ी चुनौतियां
नए सीडीएस के रूप में उनके सामने एकीकृत थिएटर कमांड को अंतिम रूप देना, स्वदेशी रक्षा उत्पादन को गति देना, कृत्रिम बुद्धिमत्ता, ड्रोन, साइबर और स्पेस आधारित युद्ध क्षमताओं को बढ़ाना तथा सीमित संसाधनों के बीच तीनों सेनाओं की आवश्यकताओं में संतुलन बनाना जैसी चुनौतियां होंगी।
इसके साथ ही उन्हें यह भी सुनिश्चित करना होगा कि भारतीय सशस्त्र बल चीन और पाकिस्तान से उत्पन्न संभावित दो-मोर्चा खतरे के लिए पूरी तरह तैयार रहें।
