Lt Gen Prateek Sharma Appointed New Northern Army Commander Amid Rising India-Pakistan Border Tensions
His leadership comes at a time of heightened security concerns post-Pahalgam terror attack; replaces Lt Gen MV Suchindra Kumar
NEW DELHI/UDHAMPUR — Amid increasing tensions with Pakistan and fresh security threats in Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian government has appointed Lieutenant General Prateek Sharma as the new General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Northern Command, headquartered in Udhampur. This strategic appointment follows the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed multiple lives and reignited concerns of cross-border terrorism.
The government officially approved Lt Gen Sharma’s appointment on Monday, marking a critical leadership transition at a time when the Northern Command—responsible for operations in Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh—faces dual threats from Pakistan and China across two hostile frontiers.
High-Level Engagement in Kashmir Post-Terror Strike
Lt Gen Prateek Sharma had recently accompanied Army Chief General Manoj Pande to Srinagar following the Pahalgam attack, signaling his active operational role in formulating the immediate security response. His elevation to the top command was being closely speculated upon, given his proximity to strategic planning and his role as the Deputy Chief (Strategy) at Army Headquarters until now.
The Northern Command is the Indian Army’s most sensitive operational theatre, with daily counter-infiltration operations along the LoC (Line of Control), ongoing counter-terrorism drives in the Kashmir Valley, and vigilant military deployments in Ladakh’s eastern sector along the LAC with China.
An Officer with Strategic and Operational Depth
Lt Gen Sharma brings over three decades of extensive combat, staff, and leadership experience to his new role. An infantry officer by commission, he has commanded troops in some of the most high-altitude and conflict-ridden zones of India. His military service includes key leadership in the following operations:
- Operation Pawan: India’s Peacekeeping Mission in Sri Lanka
- Operation Meghdoot: India’s deployment on the Siachen Glacier
- Operation Rakshak: Counter-terrorism efforts in Jammu & Kashmir
- Operation Parakram: Mobilisation on the Indo-Pak border post 2001 Parliament attack
Held Crucial Roles in Army Headquarters
Apart from his field commands, Lt Gen Sharma has held pivotal roles in military planning and operations at the Army Headquarters:
- Director General Military Operations (DGMO) – one of the most powerful posts in the operational chain, where he oversaw pan-India and cross-border military preparedness.
- Director General Information Warfare – heading a newly created department within the Indian Army, he pioneered strategic communications, cyber warfare planning, and perception management.
- Military Secretary Branch – a position that manages senior-level appointments and human resources of the Indian Army.
His diverse experience reflects not only tactical brilliance but also strategic foresight required in modern hybrid warfare scenarios, including psychological operations, cyber security, and cross-domain intelligence operations.
Taking Over from Lt Gen MV Suchindra Kumar
Lt Gen Sharma succeeds Lt Gen MV Suchindra Kumar, who had taken over from Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi in February 2024 and is now superannuating. Lt Gen Kumar had led the command through several high-risk operations in Jammu and Kashmir, including intensified LoC surveillance and infrastructure buildup in Ladakh.
With Sharma taking over, the Northern Command is expected to witness enhanced inter-agency coordination, better integration of technology in warfare, and a more aggressive posturing against emerging threats.
Strategic Significance of the Appointment
The appointment of Lt Gen Sharma comes at a critical juncture:
- Increased infiltration attempts along the LoC post-snowmelt
- China’s assertiveness along the LAC, particularly in Demchok and Depsang
- Pakistan’s intelligence agencies attempting to revive terror networks in South Kashmir
- Threat of hybrid war involving drones, social media manipulation, and narcoterrorism
As Northern Army Commander, Lt Gen Sharma will not only oversee counter-terrorism operations and LoC management, but also coordinate closely with the Indian Air Force and intelligence agencies, particularly in sensitive zones like Kupwara, Uri, Poonch, Rajouri, Leh, and Kargil.

पहलगाम आतंकी हमले के बाद श्रीनगर में दिखी थी सक्रियता
हाल ही में हुए पहलगाम हमले के बाद लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल प्रतीक शर्मा, थलसेना प्रमुख जनरल मनोज पांडे के साथ श्रीनगर पहुंचे थे। यह उनकी उस रणनीतिक भूमिका को दर्शाता है जो उन्हें आतंकी हमले के तत्काल बाद निभानी पड़ी। उनकी नियुक्ति से यह स्पष्ट है कि सरकार उन्हें सक्रिय और भरोसेमंद सैन्य नेतृत्व के रूप में देखती है।
तीन दशक से अधिक का सैन्य अनुभव
प्रतीक शर्मा एक अनुभवी इन्फैंट्री अधिकारी हैं जिनका सैन्य करियर 30 वर्षों से अधिक लंबा है। उन्होंने कई महत्वपूर्ण सैन्य अभियानों में हिस्सा लिया, जिनमें शामिल हैं:
- ऑपरेशन पवन – श्रीलंका में शांति सेना
- ऑपरेशन मेघदूत – सियाचिन में तैनाती
- ऑपरेशन रक्षक – जम्मू-कश्मीर में आतंकवाद विरोधी अभियान
- ऑपरेशन पराक्रम – संसद हमले के बाद भारत-पाक सीमा पर तैनाती
सेना मुख्यालय में निभाई अहम भूमिकाएं
लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल प्रतीक शर्मा ने फील्ड ड्यूटी के साथ-साथ सेना के संचालन और रणनीति के केंद्रों में भी कई महत्वपूर्ण जिम्मेदारियां निभाई हैं:
- महानिदेशक सैन्य संचालन (DGMO) – इस भूमिका में उन्होंने भारत की सैन्य तैयारियों और सीमा पार अभियानों की निगरानी की।
- सूचना युद्ध महानिदेशक (Information Warfare) – उन्होंने सेना में स्थापित इस नई शाखा का नेतृत्व करते हुए साइबर युद्ध, संचार रणनीति और मनोवैज्ञानिक अभियानों पर कार्य किया।
- मिलिट्री सेक्रेटरी ब्रांच – सेना के वरिष्ठ अधिकारियों की नियुक्तियों से जुड़ी रणनीतिक जिम्मेदारी।
सेवानिवृत्त हो रहे हैं लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल सुचिन्द्र कुमार
लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल प्रतीक शर्मा, लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल एमवी सुचिन्द्र कुमार का स्थान लेंगे, जो फरवरी 2024 में लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल उपेंद्र द्विवेदी के बाद उत्तरी कमान के प्रमुख बने थे। कुमार अब सेवानिवृत्त हो रहे हैं।
रणनीतिक दृष्टिकोण से नियुक्ति का महत्व
उनकी नियुक्ति उस समय हुई है जब:
- एलओसी पर घुसपैठ की घटनाएं बढ़ रही हैं
- चीन एलएसी पर आक्रामक रवैया अपना रहा है
- दक्षिण कश्मीर में आतंकी गतिविधियों को फिर से सक्रिय करने की कोशिशें हो रही हैं
- ड्रोन, सोशल मीडिया और नार्को-टेरर जैसे नए खतरों का सामना हो रहा है
लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल शर्मा की अगुवाई में उत्तरी कमान से अपेक्षा की जा रही है कि वह सुरक्षा मोर्चे को और मजबूत करेगी, तकनीकी समावेश बढ़ाएगी और सीमाओं पर आक्रामक नीति अपनाएगी।
