Mumbai Airport Customs Busts ₹13 Crore Hydroponic Weed Smuggling Racket
Five Passengers Arrested in Four Separate Cases; Drugs Concealed in Chips Packets and Shampoo Bottles

In one of the most remarkable anti-narcotics operations of the year, Mumbai Airport Customs officials have successfully intercepted a major smuggling attempt involving hydroponic weed, a high-grade synthetic variety of cannabis cultivated using nutrient-rich water systems. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the officers conducted a series of coordinated checks across passenger terminals and baggage channels, leading to the seizure of 13.077 kilograms of the contraband valued at approximately ₹13.07 crore in the illicit international market.
According to Customs authorities, the seizures were made in four separate cases, all linked through a similar concealment pattern and operational method, indicating a possible organized syndicate operating across international routes. The consignment of hydroponic weed was found ingeniously hidden inside packets of potato chips and shampoo bottles, a method aimed at evading detection through regular scanning equipment.
The contraband was detected during passenger profiling at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport’s arrival terminal. Customs officials, noticing inconsistent baggage weight and suspicious behavior, subjected multiple travelers to intensive examination. Upon inspection, packets of branded snacks and personal-care bottles were discovered to contain tightly packed layers of greenish-brown herbal substance, later confirmed through field testing as hydroponic cannabis.
Following the seizure, five passengers were placed under arrest under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The accused individuals, whose identities have been withheld pending investigation, are believed to have traveled from destinations notorious for drug trafficking circuits, possibly in coordination with handlers in South-East Asia and the Middle East.
Customs officials highlighted that hydroponic weed is a highly potent variety of cannabis grown in controlled environments using artificial lighting and nutrient solutions, often commanding a higher street value due to its purity and concentrated psychoactive components. Each kilogram can fetch between ₹80 lakh to ₹1 crore in urban narcotics markets, particularly in metropolitan areas such as Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru.
Senior officers of the Mumbai Customs Zone said the operation demonstrates the department’s enhanced focus on passenger profiling, data-driven intelligence, and advanced screening technology at airports. “We have adopted integrated surveillance systems and behavioral analytics to identify potential smugglers. This seizure reflects the growing sophistication of our preventive mechanisms,” an official said.
The arrests come amid a nationwide crackdown on narcotics trafficking, with enforcement agencies increasing coordination between the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), and airport security agencies. Investigators are now tracing the larger network involved in the procurement and intended distribution of the seized contraband.
Experts note that hydroponic weed smuggling has seen a surge in recent years, especially through air passengers carrying small but high-value consignments to evade bulk detection. The packaging inside consumer goods — such as food packets, toiletries, and cosmetic containers — represents a new tactic used by traffickers to exploit the growing flow of international travelers.
As the investigation continues, all five accused have been remanded to judicial custody, and forensic examination of the seized material is underway. Officials confirmed that more arrests may follow as leads develop on the source and destination of the narcotic network.
This latest operation reinforces Mumbai Customs’ vigilance and the continued efforts of Indian enforcement agencies in countering the inflow of synthetic and high-potency drugs into the country — a menace that continues to threaten youth and urban communities.

मुंबई अंतरराष्ट्रीय हवाई अड्डे पर सीमा शुल्क अधिकारियों ने सोमवार को एक बड़ी कामयाबी हासिल करते हुए हाइड्रोपोनिक वीड (Hydroponic Weed) नामक अत्याधुनिक नशीले पदार्थ की तस्करी का पर्दाफाश किया। अधिकारियों ने कुल 13.077 किलोग्राम प्रतिबंधित मादक पदार्थ बरामद किया जिसकी अंतरराष्ट्रीय बाजार में अनुमानित कीमत लगभग ₹13.07 करोड़ आंकी गई है। यह कार्रवाई चार अलग-अलग मामलों में की गई, जिनमें कुल पांच यात्रियों को गिरफ्तार किया गया है।
सीमा शुल्क विभाग के अनुसार, यह प्रतिबंधित पदार्थ यात्रियों के सामान में बड़ी चालाकी से चिप्स के पैकेटों और शैम्पू की बोतलों में छिपाकर रखा गया था ताकि स्कैनिंग मशीनों को धोखा दिया जा सके। यह सभी यात्री विदेश से मुंबई आए थे और उनकी गतिविधियों पर संदेह होने पर कस्टम अधिकारियों ने उनका विस्तृत निरीक्षण किया।
जांच के दौरान जब सामान खोला गया, तो खाद्य पदार्थों के पैकेटों और टॉयलेट्री वस्तुओं के अंदर हरे-भूरे रंग का पाउडरनुमा पदार्थ मिला। परीक्षण के बाद यह पदार्थ हाइड्रोपोनिक गांजा निकला, जो पानी और पोषक तत्वों की मदद से नियंत्रित वातावरण में तैयार किया जाने वाला एक अत्यधिक शक्तिशाली नशीला पदार्थ है।
हाइड्रोपोनिक वीड की खासियत यह है कि इसे मिट्टी की जगह वैज्ञानिक विधियों से पानी और लाइटिंग के जरिए उगाया जाता है, जिससे इसमें नशीले तत्व (THC) की मात्रा सामान्य गांजे से कई गुना अधिक होती है। यही कारण है कि इसकी कीमत बाजार में बेहद ऊँची होती है, जो ₹80 लाख से ₹1 करोड़ प्रति किलो तक पहुंच जाती है।
अधिकारियों ने बताया कि इन यात्रियों को एनडीपीएस अधिनियम, 1985 (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985) के तहत गिरफ्तार किया गया है और उनसे पूछताछ जारी है। शुरुआती जांच में यह संभावना जताई जा रही है कि यह नेटवर्क किसी अंतरराष्ट्रीय गिरोह से जुड़ा हुआ है जो दक्षिण-पूर्व एशिया और मध्य पूर्व के देशों से भारत में इस तरह की हाइड्रोपोनिक ड्रग्स की तस्करी करता है।
मुंबई कस्टम जोन के वरिष्ठ अधिकारियों ने बताया कि यह सफलता उनके डेटा-बेस्ड इंटेलिजेंस सिस्टम, एडवांस स्क्रीनिंग टेक्नोलॉजी और पैसेंजर प्रोफाइलिंग के चलते संभव हो सकी है। “हमने यात्रियों के व्यवहार और सामान के वजन में असामान्यताओं को आधार बनाकर इस तस्करी का पता लगाया। यह हमारी निगरानी प्रणाली की सटीकता को दर्शाता है,” एक अधिकारी ने कहा।
राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर चल रही एनडीपीएस तस्करी रोधी मुहिम के तहत यह बड़ी सफलता मानी जा रही है। डीआरआई (DRI), एनसीबी (NCB) और अन्य एजेंसियां मिलकर हवाई मार्ग से हो रही तस्करी पर सख्ती से नज़र रख रही हैं।
फिलहाल सभी पांच आरोपी न्यायिक हिरासत में भेजे गए हैं। जब्त किए गए पदार्थ की लैब टेस्टिंग जारी है और अंतरराष्ट्रीय गिरोह की कड़ियों को जोड़ने के लिए जांच तेज कर दी गई है।
यह कार्रवाई साबित करती है कि भारतीय सीमा शुल्क विभाग और सुरक्षा एजेंसियां लगातार हाई-टेक ड्रग्स तस्करी पर शिकंजा कस रही हैं, ताकि देश के युवाओं और समाज को इस बढ़ते खतरे से सुरक्षित रखा जा सके।
