Prime Minister Modi Chairs High-Level National Security Meeting Amid Escalating Tensions
By Defence Journalist Sahil

New Delhi, May 9, 2025 — In the backdrop of mounting cross-border tensions and a volatile regional security environment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a crucial high-level meeting at his official residence today. The meeting was aimed at reviewing India’s strategic preparedness, response posture, and overall national security framework.

Present at the high-stakes deliberation were Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and the tri-service chiefs — General Prateek Sharma (Army), Admiral R. Hari Kumar (Navy), and Air Chief Marshal V.R. Chaudhari (Air Force). The closed-door meeting, which extended for several hours, focused on real-time threat assessments, military readiness, and deterrence measures across all domains — land, air, sea, cyber, and space.

Key Agenda: Multi-Theatre Readiness and Strategic Deterrence

According to sources familiar with the meeting, the Prime Minister was briefed on:

  • Developments along the Line of Control (LoC) and the Western front with Pakistan, especially in the wake of Operation Sindoor and subsequent Pakistani provocations including missile threats and drone intrusions.
  • Heightened Chinese activity across the Line of Actual Control (LAC), particularly in the Eastern Ladakh and Arunachal sectors.
  • Cybersecurity vulnerabilities and potential sabotage threats to key critical infrastructure, including power grids, satellite systems, and air defence radars.
  • Strategic deployment of India’s nuclear-capable missile systems and the operational status of the country’s S-400 squadrons, Akash batteries, and counter-drone defences.

The Prime Minister is believed to have sought a detailed assessment of India’s air defence grid, tri-service coordination, and space-based ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance) assets in light of recent drone swarms and missile attacks thwarted successfully by Indian systems.

Operational Review: Aftermath of Operation Sindoor

The Indian Armed Forces were also lauded during the meeting for their swift and decisive actions during Operation Sindoor, which led to the destruction of nine major terrorist camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), the elimination of strategic targets in Lahore and Karachi, and the neutralisation of over 150 hostile assets including drone launch pads, communication hubs, and weapon depots.

Top officials reportedly shared detailed post-operation analysis, including imagery from satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), showing the extent of damage inflicted on enemy infrastructure. The Ministry of Defence and CDS Chauhan are now planning follow-up strategic surveillance operations to preempt retaliatory threats.

Civil Defence and Internal Security Also Under Review

With recent security drills and blackout orders issued in cities like Bikaner, Jaisalmer, and Pathankot, the Prime Minister is also said to have reviewed the national civilian preparedness mechanism in the event of a wider conflict. NSA Ajit Doval briefed PM Modi on coordination with state intelligence units, counter-terror protocols, and ongoing operations to track cross-border infiltration via the Punjab and Rajasthan sectors.

Sources added that Home Ministry inputs were also presented, highlighting the risk of coordinated terrorist strikes in urban hubs in retaliation for India’s recent deep-strike operations.

Diplomatic Dimensions and Global Outreach

In parallel with India’s military preparedness, the Prime Minister was briefed on the global diplomatic scenario, including updates from Indian missions in the US, France, Russia, and Israel. India has received significant support from strategic partners, and has also engaged in backchannel diplomacy to de-escalate tensions while preserving operational dominance.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to hold consultations with counterparts in key friendly nations and update the Parliament with a classified version of the operational and strategic review, sources indicated.

Message of Firm Resolve

The message from South Block is clear: India is ready, resolute, and unshaken. The Prime Minister has emphasised that while India seeks peace and stability, any act of aggression will be met with a forceful and irreversible response.

The tri-services have been placed on high alert, with offensive and defensive assets repositioned for optimal effect. Combat air patrols, naval fleet movements, and missile defence batteries are on standby, ready to respond at a moment’s notice.
