Sainik Sammelan in Gujarat’s Jamnagar Brings Healthcare, CSD and Pension Services to Ex-Servicemen and Their Families
Jamnagar: Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare, dignity and well-being of military veterans and their families, a Sainik Sammelan was organised on October 25, 2026, for ex-servicemen (ESM), widows and their dependents from the Dhrol, Jodiya and Kalavad talukas of Jamnagar district. The initiative brought essential welfare services closer to veterans, enabling them to access healthcare, canteen facilities and pension-related assistance without having to travel long distances.
The sammelan focused on addressing the practical needs of veterans and their families through coordinated support from medical professionals, military personnel and government representatives. By bringing multiple services together at a single location, the initiative aimed to make welfare assistance more accessible, efficient and responsive to the needs of those who have served the nation.
A major highlight was the comprehensive medical support provided by a 30-member medical team from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Rajkot. The team included super-specialists and conducted medical check-ups, diagnostic blood investigations and consultations for eligible beneficiaries. Free medicines were also distributed, helping veterans and their family members access essential healthcare services.
The participation of AIIMS Rajkot, described in the event brief as Gujarat’s only AIIMS, added a significant healthcare component to the initiative. Access to medical assessment and specialist support is particularly important for veterans and elderly dependents, for whom regular hospital visits may involve considerable time, travel and expense. By bringing these services directly to the beneficiaries, the sammelan helped reduce some of the practical barriers to accessing medical care.
Another important facility was the extension counter of the Unit Run Canteen (URC), established to provide Canteen Stores Department (CSD) goods closer to the veteran community. The counter was managed by a dedicated detachment of the 27 Madras Regiment from Jamnagar, comprising one officer, one Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and six other ranks.
The URC extension counter successfully distributed CSD goods worth approximately ₹2 lakh. The facility provided practical assistance to veterans and their families by improving access to canteen items and reducing the need for separate journeys to obtain essential goods.
Pension-related assistance formed another key component of the sammelan. SPARSH portal services were operationalised on-site to help beneficiaries address pension grievances, obtain assistance with Pension Payment Order (PPO) issuance and submit Digital Life Certificates. These services are particularly relevant for pensioners who may face difficulties navigating digital systems or resolving documentation-related issues.
The availability of on-site SPARSH support offered veterans and their dependents an opportunity to seek assistance with pension matters directly. Timely resolution of pension grievances and completion of mandatory digital formalities are essential to ensuring that eligible beneficiaries continue to receive their entitlements without unnecessary administrative hurdles.
The event was attended by Smt. Poonamben Madam, Member of Parliament from Jamnagar and wife of an ex-Naval officer; Shri Raghavji Patel, former Cabinet Minister; the MLA representing Jamnagar Rural; the District Judge of Jamnagar; the Tahsildar of Dhrol; the Range Forest Officer (RFO) of Dhrol; and Lieutenant Colonel Hariharan Pillai of the Yoga Board, Gandhinagar.
Their participation reflected the importance of coordination among military welfare representatives, civil administration and public representatives in addressing the needs of the ex-servicemen community. Such cooperation can help connect veterans and their families with healthcare facilities, pension support and other welfare services.
For many veterans, the transition from military service to civilian life brings new administrative, healthcare and family-related requirements. Widows and dependents may also need assistance with pension documentation, digital processes and access to welfare facilities. Initiatives such as the Sainik Sammelan provide a practical mechanism for identifying these needs and delivering support directly to beneficiaries.
By combining specialist medical services, access to CSD goods and on-site pension assistance, the Jamnagar Sainik Sammelan demonstrated a coordinated approach to veteran welfare. The initiative also underscored the importance of ensuring that the benefits and support available to the ex-servicemen community reach those who need them, including families living in different talukas of the district.
The sammelan reaffirmed the continuing commitment to honouring the service and sacrifices of military personnel by supporting them and their families beyond their years in uniform. Its central message was clear: the responsibility towards those who have served the nation continues through sustained attention to their healthcare, dignity, financial security and overall well-being.
