Senior IPS Hemant Kumar Sharma Takes Charge as New IG of Bikaner Range: Signals Tough Measures on Crime & Border Drug Threat

In a development of significant administrative and strategic importance for western Rajasthan, senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Hemant Kumar Sharma officially assumed charge as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for Bikaner Range on Wednesday. The ceremonial welcome was marked with a formal Guard of Honour at the Bikaner police headquarters, in the presence of Bikaner Superintendent of Police Kavendra Singh Sagar and senior police officers from across the region.

Clear Message: Public Safety, Crime Control and Border Vigilance a Priority

Addressing the media soon after taking charge, IG Sharma laid out a sharp and strategic vision for policing in the Bikaner Range. He stressed that his top priorities would include robust public safety mechanisms, effective control over rising crime, and aggressive crackdown on the growing drug menace in border areas adjoining Pakistan. “The geographical sensitivity of this range, especially due to the international border, necessitates a proactive and intelligence-driven policing system,” he stated.

Focus on Border Areas: Curtailing Cross-Border Narco Smuggling

Sharma’s words underscore the increasing concern over cross-border narco-terror activities and smuggling routes that exploit the long, porous Indo-Pak border in Bikaner, Sri Ganganagar, and Jaisalmer districts. He announced an emphasis on intensifying surveillance in border regions, strengthening the local intelligence network, and ensuring strong coordination between police, BSF, and other central agencies.

“The threats emerging from across the border, whether in the form of narcotics smuggling or illegal infiltration, will be dealt with zero tolerance. We are looking at technology integration and strategic intelligence gathering,” Sharma asserted.

Combating Social and Organized Crime

Beyond border concerns, the new IG also laid stress on combating internal social crimes, cyber threats, and organized criminal networks. He emphasized reforms to make the police force more agile, responsive, and tech-savvy. “We aim to bring in more digital monitoring, crime pattern analysis, and AI-driven data tools to enhance law enforcement efficiency,” Sharma added.

Strengthening Public-Police Interface

IG Hemant Kumar Sharma is also known for his people-centric policing model. At the Bikaner Range, he plans to boost public engagement by reviving police-community dialogue platforms at the thana (police station) level, launching awareness campaigns in educational institutions, and involving youth through volunteer initiatives like ‘Police Mitra’ (Friends of Police). “A vigilant and cooperative society is our strongest ally against crime,” he said.

A Globally-Seasoned Officer with Deep Roots in Rajasthan

A 2007 batch IPS officer, Hemant Kumar Sharma brings with him rich field experience, having served as SP in districts like Kota, Bhilwara, Barmer, Jaisalmer, and Sri Ganganagar. Notably, his international tenure as a Planning Officer with the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in New York adds a unique global dimension to his policing philosophy. Sharma served for three and a half years at the UN, contributing to global security frameworks and conflict-resolution planning.

Outside the uniform, IG Sharma is an acclaimed photography enthusiast, a passion he nurtured during college and continued through his international postings. He has captured rich visual narratives across Europe, Africa, and the Americas, even hosting solo exhibitions of his work. पश्चिमी राजस्थान के लिए एक अहम प्रशासनिक और रणनीतिक परिवर्तन के तहत वरिष्ठ आईपीएस अधिकारी हेमंत कुमार शर्मा ने बुधवार को बीकानेर रेंज के पुलिस महानिरीक्षक (आईजी) का विधिवत कार्यभार संभाल लिया। बीकानेर पुलिस लाइन में आयोजित समारोह में उन्हें गार्ड ऑफ ऑनर दिया गया। इस दौरान बीकानेर एसपी कावेन्द्र सिंह सागर सहित रेंज के अन्य अधिकारी और पुलिसकर्मी मौजूद रहे।

संदेश स्पष्ट: जनता की सुरक्षा, अपराध पर नियंत्रण और बॉर्डर की निगरानी सर्वोपरि

कार्यभार संभालने के बाद पत्रकारों से बातचीत में आईजी शर्मा ने अपनी प्राथमिकताएं स्पष्ट कीं—जनसुरक्षा, अपराध पर प्रभावी नियंत्रण और सीमा से सटे इलाकों में बढ़ते नशे के खतरे पर निर्णायक कार्यवाही। उन्होंने कहा कि “बीकानेर संभाग की भौगोलिक स्थिति विशेष है, जिसमें पाकिस्तान सीमा से लगे जिले शामिल हैं। इन क्षेत्रों में मादक पदार्थों की तस्करी और अन्य अवैध गतिविधियों की संभावना ज्यादा रहती है, जिन्हें रोकना हमारी प्राथमिकता होगी।”

सीमा क्षेत्रों पर फोकस: नशा तस्करी पर सख्त निगरानी

आईजी शर्मा ने कहा कि सीमावर्ती इलाकों में बीएसएफ, खुफिया एजेंसियों और पुलिस के बीच समन्वय को मजबूत किया जाएगा। सीमापार से ड्रग्स की तस्करी पर नियंत्रण के लिए तकनीकी निगरानी, गुप्त सूचनाएं और ऑपरेशनल एक्शन प्लान तैयार किए जाएंगे।

सामाजिक व संगठित अपराधों पर भी होगी कार्यवाही

आईजी ने यह भी कहा कि केवल सीमा ही नहीं, बल्कि संभाग के भीतरी क्षेत्रों में भी सामाजिक अपराधों, संगठित अपराध गिरोहों और साइबर क्राइम पर कड़ी कार्यवाही होगी। उन्होंने बताया कि पुलिस बल को और अधिक आधुनिक, तकनीकी रूप से सुसज्जित और संवेदनशील बनाया जाएगा।

जनसहभागिता बढ़ाना भी प्राथमिकता

आईजी हेमंत शर्मा ने कहा कि पुलिस व्यवस्था को प्रभावी बनाने के लिए जनता की भागीदारी जरूरी है। वे थाना स्तर पर जन संवाद कार्यक्रम, पुलिस मित्र अभियान, और स्कूल-कॉलेजों में जागरूकता अभियानों को प्राथमिकता देंगे। “सजग समाज ही हमारी सबसे बड़ी ताकत है”, उन्होंने कहा।

राष्ट्रीय और अंतरराष्ट्रीय अनुभव से लैस अधिकारी

2007 बैच के आईपीएस अधिकारी हेमंत कुमार शर्मा पूर्व में श्रीगंगानगर, कोटा, भीलवाड़ा, जैसलमेर और बाड़मेर जैसे संवेदनशील जिलों में पुलिस अधीक्षक के रूप में सेवाएं दे चुके हैं। इसके अलावा वे संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ के पीस कीपिंग मिशन के तहत न्यूयॉर्क में 3.5 वर्षों तक प्लानिंग ऑफिसर के रूप में कार्यरत रहे, जहां उन्होंने वैश्विक सुरक्षा और शांति रणनीतियों पर काम किया।

फोटोग्राफी का जुनून भी है खास पहचान

पुलिस अधिकारी होने के साथ-साथ हेमंत शर्मा एक पेशेवर फोटोग्राफर भी हैं। कॉलेज जीवन से शुरू हुआ यह शौक उन्हें यूरोप, अफ्रीका और अमेरिका तक ले गया, जहां उन्होंने विभिन्न संस्कृतियों और प्राकृतिक दृश्यों को अपने कैमरे में कैद किया। उन्होंने कई सोलो फोटो एग्जिबिशन भी लगाए हैं।
