On Tuesday, June 18th, the UK Defence Industry Economic Delegation visited HD Hyundai’s Global R&D Center (GRC) to review HD Hyundai’s capabilities in the naval sector and to explore collaboration opportunities.
The UK delegation, visiting Korea to attend the Korea-UK Defence Industry and Logistics Committee, included high officials from the UK Defence and Security Exports (UKDSE) under the Department for Business and Trade, along with representatives from leading UK defence companies. In total, around 30 members of the delegation visited HD Hyundai’s Global R&D Center (GRC) in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province.
The UK economic delegation included over 10 senior officials from UKDSE, as well as top executives from major global defence companies such as BAE Systems, Thales UK, Atlas UK, and Leonardo UK.
During the two-hour visit, HD Hyundai showcased its capabilities and advanced technologies in the naval sector to the delegation and discussed potential future collaborations.
Additionally, the delegation received a briefing on HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Digital Transformation (DT) sector.
An HD Hyundai representative stated,
HD Hyundai will continue to strive to become a long-term defence industry partner with the UK.
Currently, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is at the forefront of exporting Korean naval vessels. Earlier that morning, at its Ulsan headquarters, HD Hyundai held a launch ceremony for the ‘BRP Miguel Malvar,’ the first 3,200-ton corvette for the Philippine Navy, attended by the Philippine Defence Secretary and senior military officials. In April, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries signed a contract worth 640.6 billion KRW (463.5 million USD) with the Peruvian Navy for the joint production of naval vessels with SIMA, a Peruvian state-owned shipyard, leading the export of Korean naval vessels.
Furthermore, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries commemorated the first timely delivery of a 3,000-ton class submarine by hosting the signing ceremony for the “ROKS Shin Chae-ho” submarine delivery. The event was attended by government representatives from nine countries around the world, showcasing the excellence of Korean naval vessels, including submarines, Aegis destroyers, and frigates.
