New Delhi / Thiruvananthapuram, July 22 – After over a month-long stay at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, the United Kingdom’s cutting-edge stealth fighter jet, the F-35B Lightning II, has finally taken off and returned to its operational duties. The fighter jet, part of the UK Royal Navy’s Carrier Strike Group led by the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales, had made an emergency landing on June 14 following an in-flight emergency. The British High Commission has officially conveyed deep gratitude to Indian authorities for their swift and collaborative support throughout the emergency, repair, and recovery operation.
In a statement issued by the British High Commission Spokesperson on Tuesday, it was noted, “A UK F-35B aircraft, which landed following an emergency diversion on June 14, departed today from Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. A UK engineering team, deployed since July 6, completed the repairs and safety checks, allowing the aircraft to resume active service. The UK remains very grateful for the support and collaboration of the Indian authorities and airport teams throughout the repair and recovery process.”
The departure marks the successful conclusion of an unusual and highly technical diplomatic and military engagement, showcasing operational transparency and mutual trust between the two countries.
How It All Unfolded: Emergency Landing of a 5th Generation Jet in Civilian Airspace
The incident began on June 14, when a UK Royal Navy F-35B stealth aircraft – operating from HMS Prince of Wales – faced adverse weather and developed an in-flight snag while on a routine sortie. Unable to return to the aircraft carrier, the pilot made a decisive call to land at the designated Emergency Recovery Airfield in India — Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, Kerala.
Despite the jet’s high-profile nature and the sensitive stealth technology it houses, India’s civil and military aviation ecosystem responded with seamless coordination. The Indian Air Force stepped in to provide technical support, refuelling, and ensured operational security, while the airport authorities made provisions to accommodate the aircraft without disturbing routine flight operations.
Following its emergency landing, the aircraft developed a hydraulic system fault, which necessitated on-ground technical intervention. Initially assessed by engineers from HMS Prince of Wales, it was soon clear that a UK-based specialised engineering team would be needed to carry out the complex repairs. The aircraft was temporarily shifted to the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility at the airport, after India offered access for technical handling — a rare gesture for such high-value military platforms.

Throughout the episode, both Indian and UK authorities maintained a diplomatic balance, keeping operational secrecy intact while facilitating logistical and engineering operations for a platform that represents the cutting edge of Western aviation technology. The Lockheed Martin-built F-35B, a 5th generation stealth multirole fighter, is renowned for its Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) capability and plays a pivotal role in NATO’s air dominance doctrine.
