In a dignified and historic ceremony held at Cambrian Hall Auditorium in Dehradun, Uttarakhand Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd), PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, VSM, officially released the much-awaited autobiography of Lieutenant General Shakti Gurung (Retd), PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, VSM, titled “Breaking the Glass Ceiling” on Sunday, June 29, 2025.

The event witnessed the presence of senior military veterans, officers, distinguished guests, and members of the Gorkha community, making it a memorable occasion that celebrated not just an extraordinary military career but also the proud legacy of the Indian Gorkhas in nation-building.

An Extraordinary Military Journey Beyond Tradition

“Breaking the Glass Ceiling” chronicles the inspiring journey of Lt Gen Shakti Gurung, the first ethnic Gorkha officer to rise to such senior ranks in the Indian Army, commissioned not into the traditional Gorkha regiments but the esteemed Grenadiers Regiment. His trailblazing career saw him serve in critical operational areas, including commanding a forward Corps along the volatile Line of Actual Control (LAC) and eventually holding the prestigious post of Military Secretary at Army Headquarters before his retirement.

His life story is not just a personal account but a testament to breaking stereotypes and shattering barriers that have long existed in military hierarchies. Through this autobiography, General Gurung sheds light on his experiences, challenges, and triumphs while also exploring the identity, traditions, and invaluable contributions of the Indian Gorkha community.

Hidden Historical Insights Revealed

The book presents several lesser-known historical facts, including how the Andaman and Nicobar Islands were handed over to Indian control post-Independence in exchange for the redeployment of Gorkha regiments—a fascinating revelation that underscores the Gorkhas’ strategic importance to the nation’s defence framework.

General Gurung also shares rare perspectives on military administration, strategic human resource management, and counter-terrorism operations, drawn from his vast experience, including his tenure as Defence Attaché in Kashmir, Northeast India, and Myanmar.

Inspiration for Youth and Future Leaders

Speaking at the occasion, Governor Gurmit Singh lauded the efforts of General Gurung and emphasized the book’s relevance for the younger generation, especially those aspiring to join the defence services.
“This book is not merely a military memoir; it is a guiding light for young minds who dream of serving the nation,” he stated.
Governor Singh also urged other military veterans to document their experiences so that the invaluable lessons of courage, sacrifice, and leadership can be shared with society.

About the Author: Lt Gen Shakti Gurung

A distinguished alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, Lt Gen Shakti Gurung was commissioned into the Grenadiers Regiment in June 1975. Over the course of an illustrious career, he held vital staff, training, and diplomatic assignments. His educational qualifications include prestigious institutions such as Staff College, Senior Command, Higher Command, and the National Defence College. He retired in October 2014 as Military Secretary at Army Headquarters, leaving behind an enduring legacy of excellence and integrity.

A Tribute to His Regiment and Soldiers

General Gurung has dedicated the book to the officers, junior commissioned officers, and soldiers of his regiment, particularly the 15 and 21 Grenadiers units, acknowledging their unwavering support throughout his journey of “breaking the glass ceiling.”

उत्तराखंड की राजधानी देहरादून स्थित कैंब्रियन हॉल ऑडिटोरियम में रविवार को एक ऐतिहासिक एवं गरिमामयी समारोह में उत्तराखंड के माननीय राज्यपाल लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल गुरमीत सिंह (सेवानिवृत्त), पीवीएसएम, यूवाईएसएम, एवीएसएम, वीएसएम ने लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल शक्ति गुरंग (सेवानिवृत्त), पीवीएसएम, यूवाईएसएम, एवीएसएम, वीएसएम की आत्मकथा ‘ब्रेकिंग द ग्लास सीलिंग’ का औपचारिक विमोचन किया।

इस अवसर पर भारतीय सेना के अनेक वरिष्ठ अधिकारी, पूर्व सैनिक, गोरखा समुदाय के प्रतिष्ठित सदस्य एवं अनेक गणमान्य नागरिक उपस्थित रहे। यह कार्यक्रम न केवल एक विशिष्ट सैन्य यात्रा का उत्सव था, बल्कि भारतीय गोरखा समुदाय की गौरवपूर्ण विरासत और राष्ट्र निर्माण में उनकी भूमिका का भी सम्मान था।

परंपराओं से परे एक प्रेरक सैन्य यात्रा

‘ब्रेकिंग द ग्लास सीलिंग’ लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल शक्ति गुरंग की उस ऐतिहासिक यात्रा को प्रस्तुत करती है, जिसमें उन्होंने भारतीय सेना में गोरखा समुदाय के पारंपरिक सेवा रेजीमेंटों से इतर ग्रेनेडियर्स रेजिमेंट से कमीशन प्राप्त कर ऊंचे सैन्य पदों तक पहुंच बनाई। वे भारतीय सेना में उच्चतम सैन्य प्रशासनिक पद ‘मिलिट्री सेक्रेटरी’ तक पहुंचे और वास्तविक नियंत्रण रेखा (एलएसी) पर अग्रिम कोर की कमान संभाली।

इस पुस्तक में आज़ादी के समय का एक बहुत कम ज्ञात तथ्य भी साझा किया गया है कि किस प्रकार अंडमान और निकोबार द्वीप समूह को गोरखा रेजीमेंट्स की तैनाती के बदले भारत को सौंपा गया। यह पहल भारत की सुरक्षा रणनीति में गोरखा समुदाय की अहम भूमिका को दर्शाती है।

लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल गुरंग ने अपने करियर में कश्मीर, उत्तर-पूर्व और म्यांमार में रक्षा एटैशी के रूप में सेवा दी और आतंकवाद विरोधी अभियानों में उल्लेखनीय योगदान दिया। उनकी आत्मकथा में सैन्य प्रशासन, मानव संसाधन प्रबंधन एवं रणनीतिक मामलों पर दुर्लभ दृष्टिकोण मिलता है।

युवाओं के लिए प्रेरणास्रोत

राज्यपाल लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल गुरमीत सिंह ने कहा, “यह पुस्तक केवल एक सैन्य अधिकारी की आत्मकथा नहीं, बल्कि युवाओं विशेषकर रक्षा सेवाओं में जाने के इच्छुक युवाओं के लिए एक मार्गदर्शक और प्रेरणास्रोत है।”
उन्होंने देश के सभी सैन्य वयोवृद्धों से भी आह्वान किया कि वे अपने अनुभवों को पुस्तकों के माध्यम से समाज के साथ साझा करें ताकि युवाओं को सही दिशा मिल सके।

लेखक परिचय: लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल शक्ति गुरंग

राष्ट्रीय रक्षा अकादमी, खडकवासला एवं भारतीय सैन्य अकादमी, देहरादून के पूर्व छात्र लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल शक्ति गुरंग को जून 1975 में ग्रेनेडियर्स रेजिमेंट में कमीशन प्राप्त हुआ। उन्होंने सेना में अनेक महत्वपूर्ण स्टाफ, प्रशिक्षण एवं कूटनीतिक दायित्व निभाए। वे स्टाफ कॉलेज, सीनियर कमांड, हायर कमांड एवं नेशनल डिफेंस कॉलेज के स्नातक हैं। अक्टूबर 2014 में सेना मुख्यालय में मिलिट्री सेक्रेटरी के पद से सेवानिवृत्त हुए।

अपनी रेजिमेंट के लिए समर्पण

अपनी पुस्तक उन्होंने अपनी रेजिमेंट, विशेषकर 15 और 21 ग्रेनेडियर्स के अधिकारियों, जूनियर कमीशंड ऑफिसरों और जवानों को समर्पित की है, जिन्होंने उनके हर कदम पर साथ देकर उन्हें “ग्लास सीलिंग” तोड़ने में मदद की।
