VARUNA 2025: Strengthening India-France Naval Ties through High-Intensity Maritime Drills
New Delhi, 23 March 2025 – The Indian Navy and the French Navy successfully concluded the bilateral naval exercise VARUNA 2025, held from 19 to 22 March 2025, further cementing their longstanding maritime partnership. This annual exercise, a key feature of India-France defence cooperation, witnessed a series of high-intensity drills across multiple domains, reinforcing joint operational capabilities and interoperability between the two navies.
This year’s edition of VARUNA featured advanced Air Defence, Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Surface Warfare, and Replenishment at Sea operations. In a major highlight, Rafale-M fighter jets of the French Navy and MiG-29K aircraft of the Indian Navy conducted joint air defence drills, replicating realistic combat scenarios and sharpening the ability of both navies to counter aerial threats effectively.
Anti-Submarine Warfare exercises saw an Indian Navy submarine operating alongside anti-submarine frigates from both navies, enhancing joint underwater domain awareness and tactical proficiency. Meanwhile, surface warfare operations involved complex coordinated manoeuvres and simulated missile engagements, showcasing the combat synergy between the participating fleets. The exercise also included Replenishment at Sea (RAS) drills, demonstrating the logistical interoperability between the two navies’ fleet tankers, which is crucial for sustaining prolonged maritime operations.
The successful completion of VARUNA 2025 marks another step forward in India-France strategic defence cooperation. The exercise facilitated knowledge-sharing on operational doctrines, tactical coordination, and real-time decision-making, enhancing the ability of both navies to respond effectively to maritime security challenges. With a shared commitment to a rules-based maritime order in the Indo-Pacific, India and France reaffirmed their role in safeguarding global sea lanes and ensuring regional stability.

नई दिल्ली, 23 मार्च 2025 – भारतीय नौसेना और फ्रांसीसी नौसेना के बीच बहुप्रतीक्षित द्विपक्षीय अभ्यास VARUNA 2025 का सफल समापन 19 से 22 मार्च 2025 के बीच हुआ। यह नौसैनिक अभ्यास दोनों देशों के बीच मजबूत सुरक्षा और सामरिक सहयोग को दर्शाता है और हिंद-प्रशांत क्षेत्र में साझा समुद्री सुरक्षा हितों को बढ़ावा देता है।
इस साल के VARUNA अभ्यास में वायु रक्षा, पनडुब्बी रोधी युद्ध (ASW), सतह युद्ध, और समुद्र में पुनःपूर्ति (Replenishment at Sea) जैसे उच्च-तीव्रता वाले सैन्य अभ्यास शामिल थे। एक प्रमुख आकर्षण फ्रांस की नौसेना के राफेल-M और भारतीय नौसेना के मिग-29K लड़ाकू विमानों के बीच संयुक्त हवाई रक्षा अभ्यास था, जिसमें यथार्थवादी युद्ध परिदृश्य तैयार किए गए और दोनों नौसेनाओं की हवाई हमलों से निपटने की क्षमताओं को मजबूती मिली।
