VEER GUARDIAN 2026: INDIA-JAPAN AIR POWER TAKES CENTER STAGE OVER JODHPUR
Exercise Veer Guardian-2026 has emerged as a significant chapter in the expanding India-Japan defence partnership, bringing the Indian Air Force and Japan Air Self-Defense Force together at Air Force Station Jodhpur for a 14-day bilateral air exercise scheduled from September 9 to September 22, 2026. The exercise brings together the Indian Air Force’s LCA Tejas, Su-30MKI and Rafale fighter aircraft alongside Japan’s F-2A fighters, creating a high-end operational environment for both air forces to train, interact and exchange professional expertise. The exercise is focused on advanced operational missions, mission planning, subject-matter-expert exchanges, engineering interactions and aerospace safety activities, making it far more than a conventional flying engagement. At Jodhpur, Indian and Japanese personnel are working together across multiple levels to build greater operational understanding, professional familiarity and interoperability while gaining practical exposure to each other’s procedures and capabilities.
JAPANESE F-2A FIGHTERS IN INDIA MARK A MAJOR MILESTONE FOR BILATERAL AIR COOPERATION
The deployment of Japanese F-2A fighter aircraft to India has become one of the defining features of Veer Guardian-2026 and represents an important development in bilateral air-force cooperation. The presence of Japanese fighters at an Indian air base allows JASDF pilots and technical personnel to operate in an unfamiliar geographical and operational environment while working directly with their Indian counterparts. For the Indian side, the deployment provides an opportunity to gain greater familiarity with Japanese fighter operations, procedures and professional practices. The significance of the deployment goes beyond the aircraft themselves because modern air operations depend heavily on coordination between pilots, mission planners, engineers, technical specialists and commanders. By bringing these elements together at Jodhpur, Veer Guardian-2026 is creating a practical environment in which India and Japan can deepen military understanding through direct interaction rather than relying solely on institutional or strategic dialogue.
RAJNATH SINGH CALLS JAPANESE FIGHTER DEPLOYMENT A “SIGNIFICANT MILESTONE”
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has described Japan’s decision to deploy fighter aircraft to India for Veer Guardian-2026 as a “significant milestone” for the India-Japan defence partnership. The deployment reflects the growing level of trust between the two countries and their shared commitment to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. India and Japan have steadily expanded defence cooperation through military exercises, professional exchanges and strategic engagement, and the Jodhpur exercise adds a strong air-power dimension to that relationship. The participation of Japanese F-2A fighters alongside Indian combat aircraft provides both sides with an opportunity to understand different operational approaches while developing practical familiarity between their personnel. The exercise therefore connects the broader strategic relationship between New Delhi and Tokyo with direct military activity involving fighter aircraft, aircrew, mission planners, engineers and technical specialists.
TEJAS, SU-30MKI AND RAFALE BRING INDIA’S FRONTLINE FIGHTER POWER TO JODHPUR
The Indian Air Force has brought three of its most prominent fighter platforms—LCA Tejas, Su-30MKI and Rafale—into Veer Guardian-2026, giving the exercise a broad representation of India’s combat aviation capability. Tejas represents India’s indigenous fighter-aircraft development and the growing strength of the country’s domestic aerospace ecosystem, while the Su-30MKI remains one of the IAF’s principal multirole combat platforms and Rafale adds another advanced multirole capability to the exercise environment. Operating these aircraft alongside Japan’s F-2A fighters allows aircrew from both countries to gain exposure to different aircraft, operational concepts and mission-planning approaches. The interaction also extends beyond the cockpit, involving the technical and support personnel who make sustained fighter operations possible. In that sense, Veer Guardian-2026 is creating a broader professional environment where both air forces can learn from each other at multiple levels.
JAPAN AIR CHIEF GENERAL TAKEHIRO MORITA FLIES THE INDIAN TEJAS
One of the most closely watched moments of Veer Guardian-2026 came when Japan Air Self-Defense Force Chief of Staff General Takehiro Morita flew aboard the Indian Air Force’s LCA Tejas at Jodhpur. The sortie became a powerful symbol of the professional trust and confidence developing between the two air forces, placing the Japanese air chief directly inside an Indian fighter aircraft during the bilateral exercise. General Morita described the experience as an invaluable opportunity and praised India’s indigenous fighter and aerospace development. His flight was more than a ceremonial event; it provided a direct opportunity for Japan’s senior air-force leadership to experience an Indian-developed combat aircraft while participating in a major bilateral exercise. The moment also highlighted the increasingly personal and professional nature of the relationship between the two air forces, with senior commanders moving beyond formal meetings and directly engaging with each other’s operational environment.
AMAR PREET SINGH AND GENERAL MORITA PUT SENIOR AIR-FORCE LEADERSHIP AT THE HEART OF THE EXERCISE
Indian Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh and Japan Air Self-Defense Force Chief of Staff General Takehiro Morita were present at Jodhpur during the exercise, underscoring the importance attached to Veer Guardian-2026 by both countries. Their engagement provided senior-level leadership to an exercise designed around flying operations as well as professional interaction, operational understanding and long-term interoperability. Air Chief Marshal Singh has highlighted the progress of India’s defence aviation sector, the operationalisation of Tejas and the country’s future fighter programmes, including Tejas Mk2 and the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft. General Morita’s Tejas sortie added another operational dimension to the interaction, creating a direct link between the leadership of the two air forces and India’s indigenous fighter programme.
AIR FORCE PATCH EXCHANGE BECOMES A SYMBOL OF INDIA-JAPAN MILITARY FRIENDSHIP
Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh and General Takehiro Morita also exchanged Air Force patches at Air Force Station Jodhpur, marking another symbolic moment during Veer Guardian-2026. The exchange represented the professional relationship and institutional friendship being developed through the exercise and highlighted the human dimension of military cooperation. While fighter sorties and operational missions remain at the core of any air exercise, personal relationships between commanders, pilots, engineers and specialists also contribute to long-term military understanding. The interaction between the two air chiefs at Jodhpur therefore carried significance beyond the ceremony itself, reinforcing the broader message of trust, professional respect and growing cooperation between the Indian Air Force and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.
THE TEJAS SORTIE PUT INDIA’S INDIGENOUS AEROSPACE CAPABILITY IN THE SPOTLIGHT
General Morita’s flight in the Tejas placed India’s indigenous aerospace capability prominently on the international defence stage during the exercise. Tejas has become a major symbol of India’s effort to design, manufacture and operate advanced combat aircraft through its domestic aerospace ecosystem. Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh has highlighted the progress of the Tejas programme, its operationalisation within the Indian Air Force and the significant orders associated with the aircraft, while future programmes such as Tejas Mk2 and AMCA point toward the next phase of India’s indigenous fighter development. General Morita’s experience inside the Tejas cockpit therefore carried significance beyond one sortie, offering a senior foreign air-force leader a direct experience of an Indian-developed fighter while simultaneously showcasing the evolution of India’s combat aviation capability.
JODHPUR BECOMES A LIVE OPERATIONAL ENVIRONMENT FOR INDIA-JAPAN INTEROPERABILITY
Air Force Station Jodhpur has provided the operational setting for an exercise that combines fighter flying with extensive professional and technical engagement. The desert environment and established military aviation infrastructure allow Indian and Japanese personnel to work together under conditions that require careful planning, coordination and technical preparation. Veer Guardian-2026 includes advanced operational missions, mission-planning conferences, subject-matter-expert exchanges, engineering interactions and aerospace safety activities. These areas are critical because modern air operations depend not only on the performance of individual aircraft but also on the ability of pilots, planners, engineers, technicians and commanders to coordinate effectively. The exercise is therefore developing interoperability across several layers of air-force operations rather than limiting cooperation to the flying component alone.
BEHIND EVERY SORTIE, A COMPLEX NETWORK OF PLANNING AND TECHNICAL PREPARATION
Every fighter sortie at Jodhpur is supported by a wider system of mission preparation, operational planning, aircraft servicing, engineering support, airspace coordination and safety procedures. Veer Guardian-2026 has placed considerable emphasis on these professional aspects, allowing Indian and Japanese personnel to exchange experience and understand different approaches to planning and executing air operations. Engineers and technical specialists are interacting on aircraft support and aerospace safety, while mission planners and subject-matter experts are sharing operational perspectives. Information regarding these activities has also been shared through the official defence communication channels by Defence PRO Rajasthan Lieutenant Colonel Nikhil Gawan and Defence PRO, Indian Air Force Wing Commander Jaideep Singh, whose inputs have highlighted the exercise’s focus on advanced operational missions, professional interaction, mission planning and technical engagement. Their information places the flying activity within the wider framework of the bilateral exercise and its objective of strengthening operational understanding between the two air forces.
VEER GUARDIAN 2026 PUSHES INDIA-JAPAN DEFENCE COOPERATION DEEPER INTO THE OPERATIONAL DOMAIN
The wider significance of Veer Guardian-2026 lies in the depth of practical engagement taking place between the Indian Air Force and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. India and Japan have steadily expanded their strategic relationship, and bilateral military exercises provide a mechanism for translating that strategic understanding into practical cooperation. The deployment of Japanese F-2A fighters, the participation of Indian Tejas, Su-30MKI and Rafale aircraft, the presence of both air-force chiefs and the interaction between pilots, planners and technical personnel collectively demonstrate the expanding scope of bilateral defence engagement. The exercise allows both sides to learn about each other’s operational procedures, planning methods and technical practices while building professional familiarity that can prove valuable in future bilateral and multinational exercises.
FROM JODHPUR’S DESERT SKIES TO THE INDO-PACIFIC
As Veer Guardian-2026 approaches its scheduled conclusion on September 22, the exercise has already produced several defining moments—from the deployment of Japanese F-2A fighters in India to General Takehiro Morita flying the Tejas and the two air chiefs exchanging service patches at Jodhpur. Yet the deeper significance of the exercise lies beyond those headline moments. Indian and Japanese aircrew are operating in the same training environment, mission planners are exchanging perspectives, engineers are interacting on technical matters and specialists are working together on aerospace safety and operational procedures. The combination of Tejas, Su-30MKI, Rafale and F-2A aircraft at Jodhpur provides a visible representation of growing India-Japan air-power cooperation, while the professional engagement taking place on the ground is helping build the institutional relationships required for deeper interoperability. Veer Guardian-2026 has consequently become another important step in the evolution of India-Japan defence cooperation, with Jodhpur serving as the stage where fighter aviation, indigenous technology, professional military engagement and strategic partnership have converged.
