YUDH ABHYAS 2026: U.S. Army’s 11th Airborne Division Lands in India for Two-Theatre War Drill — From Bikaner’s Mahajan Field Firing Range to Auli’s High-Altitude Battlefield
The United States Army and the Indian Army have kicked off the 22nd edition of Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2026, bringing American and Indian troops together for one of the most technologically focused iterations of the bilateral military exercise. This year’s edition is different from previous versions, with the exercise being conducted across two sharply contrasting operational environments — the desert training grounds of Mahajan Field Firing Range in Bikaner, Rajasthan, and the high-altitude mountainous terrain of Auli in Uttarakhand. The exercise is scheduled from September 9 to September 28.
At the centre of the American deployment is the U.S. Army’s 11th Airborne Division, based at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. The division is known as the “Arctic Angels” and its soldiers are trained to operate in some of the most demanding environments on the planet. For Yudh Abhyas 2026, Arctic-trained American soldiers are operating alongside Indian troops in an environment that combines desert warfare, high-altitude operations, air mobility and emerging battlefield technologies.
The American contingent includes the 1st Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 11th Airborne Division, commanded by Colonel Benjamin Jackman. The presence of an airborne formation with Arctic and austere-environment expertise gives this year’s exercise a distinct operational character, particularly as the training moves between Rajasthan’s open desert battlespace and the mountains of Uttarakhand.
The exercise is not simply about putting two armies together on a traditional firing range. It has been designed around the realities of modern warfare, where long-range precision fires, unmanned systems, counter-drone warfare, digital command-and-control, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and rapid battlefield mobility increasingly determine the outcome of combat.
A major feature of Yudh Abhyas 2026 is the involvement of the 3rd Multi-Domain Task Force, which brings an additional focus on long-range precision fires and integrated command-and-control systems. The U.S. Army has described this year’s exercise as an opportunity to improve the ability of American and Indian forces to integrate their capabilities and operate together in increasingly complex battlefield environments.
Bikaner’s Mahajan Field Firing Range Becomes a Key Battlefield
The Rajasthan phase places Mahajan Field Firing Range in Bikaner at the heart of the exercise. The vast desert training area provides an environment where long-range fires, manoeuvre, battlefield surveillance and fire-support capabilities can be tested under field conditions.
The desert phase is particularly important because the open terrain allows armies to train with longer-range weapon systems and practise the integration of fires with manoeuvre forces. Reports ahead of the exercise indicated a strong focus on long-range and precision fires during the Mahajan phase.
Indian systems reported as being associated with the exercise include the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher and K9 Vajra tracked self-propelled howitzer, while the U.S. Army is reported to be bringing the HIMARS — High Mobility Artillery Rocket System into the training framework. These systems represent different approaches to battlefield fires but offer significant opportunities for interoperability and fire-support coordination.
The exercise is therefore creating a battlefield environment where precision fires and manoeuvre can be integrated rather than trained as separate capabilities. The objective is not simply to fire weapons but to practise how sensors identify a battlefield requirement, how information reaches commanders, how fires are planned and how effects are delivered rapidly.
HIMARS, Pinaka and K9 — The Long-Range Fires Dimension
The reported participation of HIMARS alongside Indian artillery and rocket systems gives the Bikaner phase a particularly modern character. HIMARS has become one of the most recognisable U.S. long-range precision-fire systems, while India’s Pinaka has evolved into a major indigenous rocket artillery capability.
The K9 Vajra adds a tracked self-propelled artillery capability to the Indian side. Training around such systems allows the two armies to explore how different platforms, command structures and targeting procedures can work together during a high-tempo operation.
The emphasis is consistent with the wider evolution of Yudh Abhyas, which began in 2004 and has progressively expanded beyond its earlier peacekeeping and counter-insurgency focus to incorporate mountain warfare, electronic warfare, unmanned systems and increasingly complex operational scenarios.
Apache Attack Helicopters and the Air-Firepower Element
Another reported feature of the exercise is the planned participation of AH-64E Apache attack helicopters. Reports indicate that the Apache is slated to contribute to the fire-support architecture of the exercise, bringing its combination of precision weapons, rockets and cannon firepower into the training environment.
The significance of the Apache element goes beyond the helicopter itself. Modern ground operations increasingly depend on the ability to connect ground troops, sensors, artillery and aviation into a single battlefield network.
In a real combat scenario, attack helicopters can provide armed reconnaissance, close air support and rapid firepower against identified threats. Integrating aviation with ground formations during a bilateral exercise gives both armies an opportunity to examine how air and ground elements can communicate and coordinate under operational pressure.
Auli: From Desert Warfare to Mountain Warfare
After the Rajasthan component, the exercise moves into a completely different operational environment at Auli in Uttarakhand. Here, the emphasis shifts toward mountainous terrain, high-altitude warfare, infantry manoeuvre, air mobility and logistics.
This transition is one of the most distinctive features of Yudh Abhyas 2026. Instead of conducting separate exercises for desert and mountain warfare, troops are being exposed to both environments within the same exercise framework. Reports have described the two-theatre concept as a first for Yudh Abhyas.
The Auli phase will force soldiers and commanders to adapt to altitude, difficult terrain, restricted mobility and logistical challenges. For the American 11th Airborne Division, the mountain environment also provides an opportunity to apply lessons developed through Arctic and austere-environment training to a very different operational setting. The U.S. Army says its Arctic training prepares soldiers to operate in extreme cold, mountainous terrain and harsh conditions, while its deployment to India demonstrates that capability beyond Alaska.
Airborne and Air-Mobility Operations Take Centre Stage
The airborne identity of the American contingent adds another dimension to the exercise. While the specific drills conducted during the exercise will depend on the exercise scenario, the broader training framework includes air mobility and manoeuvre, particularly during the mountain phase.
Air mobility becomes crucial when conventional ground movement is restricted by terrain. Troops, weapons, ammunition and essential supplies may need to be moved rapidly into locations that are difficult or impossible to reach through conventional road networks.
Reports have indicated that India’s M777 ultra-light howitzers are expected to feature in the mountain phase, with their ability to be transported by heavy-lift helicopters such as the Chinook making them particularly suited to difficult terrain.
Close Combat, Infantry Manoeuvre and Field Training
The exercise is also built around practical field training rather than being limited to classroom-level coordination. Both armies are working on infantry-dominated operations, tactical manoeuvres, battlefield coordination and the ability to execute missions under realistic field conditions.
The U.S. Army has stated that Yudh Abhyas 2026 includes a command-post exercise and a field training exercise, culminating in a combined live-fire demonstration. That combination is important because it connects planning at headquarters level with actual execution by soldiers on the ground.
The exercise therefore moves from planning and decision-making to tactical manoeuvre, weapons employment and live-fire integration. It is this connection between command decisions and battlefield action that makes the training relevant to modern combat.
Counter-Drone Warfare Makes a Major Entry
Perhaps the clearest indication of how warfare has changed is the prominent role of counter-unmanned aerial systems.
Yudh Abhyas 2026 marks the first deployment of advanced U.S. counter-drone systems to India under this exercise framework. The U.S. Army has identified the Mobile Low, Slow, Small Unmanned Aircraft Integrated Defeat System, or MLIDS, as part of the exercise.
This is significant because small drones have transformed the battlefield. They can be used for surveillance, target acquisition, artillery correction and attack missions, while inexpensive unmanned systems can threaten much more expensive military assets.
The exercise therefore gives both armies an opportunity to practise the complete counter-drone chain — detecting an unmanned system, identifying the threat, tracking it and employing appropriate defeat mechanisms.
Recent reporting has also highlighted counter-drone operations as a first-time feature of this year’s Yudh Abhyas, underlining how rapidly unmanned warfare has moved from an emerging concept to a central military requirement.
Electronic Warfare, ISR and Autonomous Systems
The exercise’s modern-war focus also extends into electronic warfare and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. Modern commanders increasingly depend on a constant stream of battlefield information, while adversaries simultaneously attempt to disrupt communications, sensors and command networks.
The exercise framework includes training around unmanned systems, ISR capabilities and electronic warfare concepts, reflecting lessons from contemporary conflicts where drones, sensors and precision fires have become closely interconnected.
This means that Yudh Abhyas 2026 is not simply about who has the bigger weapon. It is increasingly about who can detect first, decide faster, communicate securely and deliver effects more accurately.
One Exercise, Two Battlefields, One Objective
From the desert of Bikaner to the mountains of Auli, Yudh Abhyas 2026 is testing whether Indian and American troops can adapt to radically different battlefield conditions while maintaining the same level of coordination.
The Mahajan phase brings long-range fires, artillery, rocket systems, aviation and counter-drone warfare into the equation. The Auli phase adds high-altitude operations, infantry manoeuvre, air mobility and difficult logistics.
Together, the two phases create a much broader test of military interoperability than a conventional bilateral exercise conducted in a single location.
For the United States, the deployment of the 11th Airborne Division’s Arctic-trained soldiers to India demonstrates the division’s ability to operate beyond its home environment and integrate with a major partner force. For India, the exercise provides an opportunity to train alongside one of the world’s most technologically advanced militaries while bringing Indian systems and operational experience into a combined training environment.
Yudh Abhyas 2026 is ultimately a reflection of how military exercises are changing. The battlefield is becoming more connected, more transparent and more lethal. Drones can find targets, sensors can pass information across networks, precision fires can strike at extended ranges and aviation can deliver effects within minutes.
Against that backdrop, the India-U.S. exercise at Mahajan Field Firing Range, Bikaner and Auli is designed to build something more important than familiarity with individual weapons — it is designed to build the ability of two armies to plan together, fight together and integrate their capabilities in a modern multi-domain battlespace.
Air-Firepower
Battlefield
Counter-Drone Warfare
Combat Training
