Air Chief Marshal AP Singh on MiG-21 and Tejas: ‘Legacy Will Continue, But Evolution is Key’

As the Indian Air Force prepares to close the chapter on its legendary MiG-21 fleet, Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, spoke candidly about the aircraft’s unmatched legacy and the road ahead for India’s indigenous platforms. His words, delivered at Nal Air Base in Bikaner, reflected both nostalgia and a firm vision for the future.
“Tejas is the True Successor”
Air Chief Marshal Singh underlined that the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas was specifically designed as a replacement for the MiG-21.
“Tejas was designed as a MiG-21 replacement. That’s why it is a small aircraft. It was designed around the MiG-21 and conceived with some kind of motivation from Mirage. That is why there’s a delta wing platform. It is going to replace the MiG-21 quite well, but it will have to evolve. We will have to think of new weapons for Tejas also. As an initial fighter training role, it can fit in very well,” he explained.
He further highlighted that 83 Tejas jets are already under production contracts and another major deal is expected to be signed soon. “Like we had MiG-21s in various versions, Tejas in its MK-1, MK-2, and eventually AMCA variants will replace this fleet,” Singh said.
Memories of a Workhorse
Looking back at the MiG-21’s historic journey, the Air Chief recalled,
“MiG-21 has been the workhorse of the Indian Air Force. We inducted it in the 1960s and are still continuing with it. About 11,000 were produced globally and more than 60 countries have operated it. My first experience was in 1985 at Tezpur, flying the Type 77. After Kirans, it was a revelation — very agile, very manoeuvrable, very simple. At maximum reheat, it could climb over 200–250 meters per second. Truly, it is an aircraft that will be missed.”
Moving Beyond
But his message was also clear — the IAF must move forward.
“This technology is now old and difficult to maintain. We’ve decided to call it a day for this aircraft and move on to new platforms like Tejas, Tejas MK2, Rafales, and Su-30s. These will take over the role and continue our air dominance,” he said.
In Singh’s words, the MiG-21 may be retiring, but its spirit lives on in Tejas, Rafale, Su-30MKI and the futuristic AMCA, ensuring that the IAF’s cutting edge remains sharp in the years to come.

भारतीय वायुसेना प्रमुख एयर चीफ़ मार्शल ए.पी. सिंह ने बीकानेर के नाल एयरबेस पर कहा कि MiG-21 ने भारतीय वायुसेना को छह दशक तक शक्ति दी, लेकिन अब वक्त आ गया है कि नई पीढ़ी के प्लेटफॉर्म उसकी जगह लें। उन्होंने साफ कहा कि तेजस को खासतौर पर MiG-21 के स्थान पर डिजाइन किया गया था और अब वही इसकी असली विरासत को आगे ले जाएगा।
“तेजस ही असली उत्तराधिकारी है”
एयर चीफ़ ने कहा,
“तेजस को MiG-21 का रिप्लेसमेंट मानकर बनाया गया था। यही वजह है कि यह छोटा विमान है। इसमें मिराज से प्रेरित डेल्टा विंग प्लेटफॉर्म है। तेजस MiG-21 की जगह अच्छी तरह ले लेगा, लेकिन इसे लगातार विकसित करना होगा। नए हथियारों और नई भूमिकाओं के हिसाब से इसे और आगे बढ़ाना पड़ेगा। प्रारंभिक फाइटर ट्रेनिंग के लिए यह बहुत उपयुक्त रहेगा।”
उन्होंने आगे कहा कि 83 तेजस विमानों का अनुबंध पहले ही साइन हो चुका है और एक और बड़ा अनुबंध जल्द आने वाला है।
“जैसे MiG-21 के कई संस्करण रहे, वैसे ही तेजस MK-1, MK-2 और आगे चलकर AMCA जैसे प्लेटफॉर्म इस बेड़े की जगह लेंगे और वायुसेना को नई शक्ति देंगे,” उन्होंने स्पष्ट किया।
MiG-21 की यादें
उन्होंने 1985 का अपना अनुभव साझा किया जब उन्होंने तेजपुर में पहली बार MiG-21 उड़ाया था।
“किरन विमान उड़ाने के बाद यह एकदम नया अनुभव था। यह बेहद फुर्तीला, मैनूवरेबल और सरल डिजाइन वाला विमान था। मैक्स रीहीट पर यह 200–250 मीटर प्रति सेकंड की दर से चढ़ सकता था। इसे उड़ाने वाले लोग इसे हमेशा मिस करेंगे,” एयर चीफ़ ने याद किया।
भविष्य की ओर कदम
उन्होंने कहा,
“अब यह तकनीक पुरानी हो चुकी है और इसे बनाए रखना मुश्किल है। इसलिए हमने तय किया है कि इस विमान को अलविदा कहें और आगे बढ़ें। तेजस, तेजस MK-2, राफेल और सुखोई-30 अब इसकी जगह लेंगे और भारतीय आकाश में वर्चस्व बनाए रखेंगे।”
एयर चीफ़ के संदेश ने साफ कर दिया कि MiG-21 भले विदाई ले रहा हो, लेकिन उसकी आत्मा अब तेजस, राफेल, सुखोई और आने वाले AMCA के रूप में भारतीय वायुसेना के साथ जीवित रहेगी।
