A Nation Mourns: Lt Col Bhanu Pratap Singh and Lance Dafadar Daljeet Singh Lose Their Lives in Ladakh Road Slide Tragedy
In the remote, unforgiving terrains of Ladakh, where every breath is a challenge and every duty a matter of valour, two brave sons of India made the ultimate sacrifice—not to bullets, but to nature’s wrath.

In an incident that underscores the ever-present dangers faced by soldiers even outside active combat zones, the Indian Army lost two of its gallant men—Lieutenant Colonel Bhanu Pratap Singh and Lance Dafadar Daljeet Singh—in a tragic road slide in Ladakh’s treacherous high-altitude terrain.
The accident occurred during a routine movement of troops in the forward areas near Karakoram Pass route, where landslides, rockfalls, and extreme weather frequently threaten mobility and life. The vehicle carrying the officers was swept away in a sudden road slide triggered by melting permafrost and unstable mountain slopes—conditions that have worsened due to recent climate fluctuations in the region.
A Stellar Officer Lost Too Soon: Lt Col Bhanu Pratap Singh
Lt Col Bhanu Pratap Singh was no ordinary officer. A Gold Medalist from the National Defence Academy (NDA) and the proud recipient of the prestigious Sword of Honour at the Indian Military Academy (IMA), he had all the markings of a military leader destined to rise high in the ranks.
Commissioned into one of the Army’s elite regiments, Singh was known for his operational excellence, battlefield ethics, and a deep sense of patriotism. He had led troops in high-risk sectors including Siachen Glacier, counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir, and along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.
Senior officers describe him as “an officer with the heart of a lion and the humility of a soldier”, who believed that leadership was about walking with the men—not above them. Despite multiple citations and commendations, his humility remained his most admired trait.
Only in his 30s, Lt Col Bhanu Pratap had a long, promising journey ahead. His untimely demise is not just a loss to his unit but to the Indian Army and the nation at large.
A Cavalryman of Honour: Lance Dafadar Daljeet Singh
Lance Dafadar Daljeet Singh, a dedicated cavalryman, hailed from a military family in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district. Known for his discipline, mechanical skills, and brave heart, Daljeet Singh had served in various field postings including deserts of Rajasthan, plains of Punjab, and high-altitude posts in Ladakh.
He was particularly adept at high-altitude logistics and vehicle operations—an asset in difficult terrains like Ladakh where every soldier must double up in multiple roles. His family recalls his last phone call where he reassured them that he would be “back home after this movement, safe and strong.”
That call would become his last.
Soldiers Die Not Just by Bullets—But By Terrain Too
While the perception of martyrdom is often limited to deaths in combat, the reality for soldiers stationed in areas like Ladakh is starkly different.
They brave oxygen-deprived altitudes, harsh sub-zero temperatures, glacial floods, avalanches, landslides, and sudden road collapses. The high mountains, where military posts cling to cliffs and roads are mere ledges carved into unstable rock, pose mortal risks every single day.
Landslides, in particular, have become more frequent due to climate change and glacial retreat, making patrolling and troop movement increasingly dangerous. This tragic incident is yet another reminder that “service conditions” in such areas are as lethal as any enemy bullet.
Military Honours and Condolences Pour In
The mortal remains of both bravehearts were airlifted to Leh and later to their hometowns with full military honours. A ceremonial guard of honour was presented, and their coffins were draped in the Tricolour.
Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi and Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Prateek Sharma expressed deep grief. “Lt Col Bhanu was a leader par excellence. His passing is a blow to the entire Army fraternity. Our prayers are with the bereaved families,” said a message from Army Headquarters.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also conveyed condolences via X (formerly Twitter), stating,
“Deeply saddened by the loss of two brave Indian Army soldiers in Ladakh. Their dedication and sacrifice, even in peacetime, is a testament to the courage of our armed forces.”
Legacy and Lessons
While the tragedy is heartbreaking, it reinforces the often-ignored reality that peace-time operations in extreme terrains are equally fatal. These are not soldiers sitting idle in barracks—they are guardians on high-altitude cliffs, keeping vigil in oxygen-thin silence, often unnoticed.
Lt Col Bhanu Pratap Singh’s legacy is one of brilliance, leadership, and duty. L/Dafadar Daljeet Singh’s life is a reminder of the unwavering dedication of India’s junior ranks.
India will remember their sacrifice—not just as soldiers, but as heroes who died so others may live safely.

यह हादसा काराकोरम मार्ग के पास हुआ, जहां बर्फ पिघलने और ज़मीन की अस्थिरता के कारण भारी भूस्खलन हुआ। उनका वाहन सीधे घाटी में गिर गया और दोनों जांबाज मौके पर ही शहीद हो गए।

लेफ्टिनेंट कर्नल भानु प्रताप सिंह NDA के स्वर्ण पदक विजेता और IMA के स्वॉर्ड ऑफ ऑनर प्राप्तकर्ता थे। वे एक असाधारण अधिकारी थे, जिनके उज्ज्वल भविष्य की कामना हर वरिष्ठ अधिकारी करता था।
उन्होंने सियाचिन, एलओसी और एलएसी जैसे उच्च जोखिम वाले क्षेत्रों में नेतृत्व किया था। उनके अधीन सैनिकों ने उन्हें एक सच्चा नेता माना जो हमेशा सबसे आगे रहता था, चाहे मौसम कितना भी विकट हो।
उनकी उम्र अभी 30 के आसपास थी और वे एक सुनहरे सैन्य करियर की ओर बढ़ रहे थे। यह क्षति केवल उनके परिवार की नहीं, बल्कि पूरी सेना और राष्ट्र की है।
लांस नायक दलजीत सिंह: पंजाब की मिट्टी का सपूत
पंजाब के तरनतारन से ताल्लुक रखने वाले लांस नायक दलजीत सिंह एक कर्मठ और बहादुर सैनिक थे। सेना में उनका अनुशासन, तकनीकी समझ और समर्पण सबके लिए प्रेरणा था।
वे पहले भी राजस्थान और जम्मू क्षेत्रों में सेवा दे चुके थे। लद्दाख में उनके अनुभव के चलते उन्हें लॉजिस्टिक ऑपरेशन में शामिल किया गया था।
उनके परिवार ने बताया कि हादसे से कुछ घंटे पहले ही उनका फोन आया था। उन्होंने कहा था, “मैं इस ड्यूटी के बाद घर लौटूंगा—सुरक्षित और मजबूत।” लेकिन वह कॉल उनकी आखिरी साबित हुई।
सीमाओं की रक्षा में प्रकृति भी दुश्मन बन जाती है
सैनिकों की शहादत अक्सर गोलियों या युद्ध से जोड़ी जाती है, लेकिन वास्तविकता इससे कहीं आगे है। लद्दाख जैसे दुर्गम क्षेत्रों में सैनिक रोज़ जोखिमों से दो-चार होते हैं—बर्फीले तूफान, ऑक्सीजन की कमी, भूस्खलन, और खतरनाक रास्ते।
इन हादसों में भी उनका बलिदान युद्ध क्षेत्र में दी गई शहादत के समान ही होता है। लेफ्टिनेंट कर्नल भानु और लांस नायक दलजीत सिंह का बलिदान यही सिखाता है कि “हर दिन वर्दी में डटे रहना भी जंग से कम नहीं।”
सेना और देश का नमन
दोनों वीरों के पार्थिव शरीर को सेना के सम्मान के साथ उनके गृह जिलों में भेजा गया। लेह में गार्ड ऑफ ऑनर और पूरे सैन्य सम्मान के साथ श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित की गई।
सेना प्रमुख जनरल उपेंद्र द्विवेदी और उत्तरी सेना के कमांडर लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल प्रतीक शर्मा ने गहरा शोक जताया। रक्षा मंत्री राजनाथ सिंह ने भी कहा:
“लद्दाख में दो वीर सैनिकों की दुखद मृत्यु से अत्यंत पीड़ा हुई है। उनका समर्पण, बलिदान और साहस सदैव स्मरणीय रहेगा।”
भारत कभी नहीं भूलेगा
लेफ्टिनेंट कर्नल भानु प्रताप सिंह और लांस नायक दलजीत सिंह का बलिदान इस देश की सुरक्षा गाथा में स्वर्णिम अक्षरों में लिखा जाएगा।
वे रणभूमि में नहीं मरे, लेकिन उनका बलिदान भी रणभूमि जैसा ही अमर है।
