Air Chief Marshal AP Singh’s Official Visit to Greece Strengthens Indo-Greek Defence Ties, Engages with Hellenic Air Force Leadership

In a significant step towards enhancing defence cooperation and strategic military ties between India and Greece, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Indian Air Force (IAF), is on an official visit to Greece. The visit marks a pivotal moment in bilateral defence relations, particularly in the backdrop of evolving geopolitical dynamics in the Mediterranean, West Asia, and Indo-Pacific regions.
As part of his engagements, Air Chief Marshal Singh met His Excellency Rudrendra Tandon, India’s Ambassador to Greece, during a reception hosted by the Indian Embassy in Athens. The interaction highlighted the growing convergence of strategic interests between India and Greece, with defence diplomacy emerging as a cornerstone of the relationship.
Defence Diplomacy at the Forefront: Meeting with Greek Air Force Leadership
During his visit, Air Chief Marshal Singh also held high-level discussions with the Chief of the Hellenic Air Force (HAF). The meeting underscored the shared commitment of both nations to deepen cooperation in areas such as air defence, training, technology sharing, and joint operational frameworks.
A symbolic yet significant moment of the visit was the shared experience on the Rafale fighter aircraft simulator. Both Air Force chiefs spent time familiarising themselves with the advanced capabilities of the Rafale, a platform that now forms a critical part of India’s frontline air combat strength and is also operated by Greece.
The Rafale simulator session not only reflected the commonality of equipment but also reinforced the importance of interoperability and collaborative training. It served as an opportunity for both Air Forces to exchange operational perspectives, especially given the similar strategic environments both nations operate in—India in the Indo-Pacific and Greece in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Building People-to-People Connect: Interaction with Greek Aircrew and Personnel
Air Chief Marshal Singh’s itinerary also included interactive sessions with aircrew and personnel of the Hellenic Air Force. These interactions served to enhance mutual understanding, share professional experiences, and further nurture the ‘Bonds in Blue’—a phrase symbolic of the deep camaraderie shared by air warriors across borders.
The Indian Air Chief’s presence and dialogue with the HAF personnel highlight India’s growing role as a global defence partner and its willingness to engage with like-minded nations in strengthening regional and global security architectures.
Broader Strategic Context: India-Greece Ties on the Rise
The visit comes at a time when India and Greece have significantly intensified their strategic engagements. Recent years have witnessed heightened cooperation in areas including defence, maritime security, counter-terrorism, and regional stability.
With Greece located at the crossroads of Europe, the Mediterranean, and West Asia, and India emerging as a key player in the Indo-Pacific, the convergence of security interests is increasingly visible. The Indian Navy’s port calls in Greece, growing diplomatic exchanges, and now high-level military visits such as that of Air Chief Marshal Singh, are reflective of this deepening bond.
Both countries have consistently supported each other on issues of territorial integrity, sovereignty, and respect for international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Rafale as a Symbol of Commonality and Cooperation
The Rafale fighter jet, operated by both the Indian and Greek Air Forces, stands as a symbol of shared technological platforms and defence capabilities. As Greece continues to modernise its armed forces and India strengthens its aerial combat prowess, platforms like the Rafale open up avenues for greater joint training, operational familiarisation, and technical cooperation.
The simulator session during this visit is expected to pave the way for more structured cooperation, including joint exercises, knowledge sharing, and potentially, combined operational planning in the future.

Air Chief Marshal Singh’s visit is expected to set the stage for enhanced bilateral air force cooperation through structured exchanges, advanced training programmes, technical collaborations, and participation in multilateral security initiatives.
With defence diplomacy gaining traction, both nations are exploring opportunities for greater industrial cooperation, especially in aerospace technologies, maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities, and possibly, joint defence production under the umbrella of ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’.
This visit is yet another testament to India’s growing stature as a responsible security partner in Europe, the Mediterranean, and beyond, further cementing its vision of building resilient, rules-based international security frameworks through meaningful partnerships.

भारत और ग्रीस के बीच रक्षा सहयोग और रणनीतिक साझेदारी को मजबूती देने के प्रयासों के तहत भारतीय वायुसेना प्रमुख एयर चीफ मार्शल एपी सिंह इन दिनों ग्रीस की आधिकारिक यात्रा पर हैं। इस यात्रा के दौरान उन्होंने भारत के ग्रीस में राजदूत महामहिम रूद्रेंद्र टंडन से एथेंस स्थित भारतीय दूतावास द्वारा आयोजित स्वागत समारोह में मुलाकात की।
यह मुलाकात केवल औपचारिकता नहीं थी, बल्कि यह दोनों देशों के बीच रणनीतिक हितों की बढ़ती एकता और रक्षा सहयोग की मजबूत होती नींव का परिचायक थी।

यह यात्रा भारत की वैश्विक रक्षा कूटनीति और जिम्मेदार सुरक्षा साझेदार की भूमिका को और मजबूत करती है, जो यूरोप, भूमध्यसागर और हिंद-प्रशांत क्षेत्र में टिकाऊ, नियम-आधारित सुरक्षा ढांचे को स्थापित करने की दिशा में कार्य कर रहा है।
