In a major development in the Indian Air Force’s top leadership, Air Marshal Manish Khanna, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and Vayu Sena Medal (VM) awardee, has formally assumed charge as the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C) of the Southern Air Command (SAC) on 01 June 2025, at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
The Southern Air Command plays a pivotal role in guarding India’s southern peninsula, island territories, and maritime interests in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). With threats in the Indo-Pacific becoming increasingly complex, Air Marshal Khanna’s vast operational and strategic experience is expected to strengthen India’s southern aerial frontiers.
A Veteran Fighter Pilot with Over 4000 Hours of Flying
Commissioned in the fighter stream of the Indian Air Force on 06 December 1986, Air Marshal Manish Khanna brings with him a rich legacy of almost four decades of distinguished military service. A Category ‘A’ Qualified Flying Instructor, he is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA), Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), College of Air Warfare (CAW), and the prestigious National Defence College (NDC).
With over 4000 hours of flying experience on multiple fighter and trainer aircraft, he has not only mastered air-to-air combat and ground-attack missions but also developed expertise in strategic reconnaissance and electronic warfare—critical for modern-day network-centric warfare.
Leadership Across Commands and International Exposure
Air Marshal Khanna’s command tenures are a testimony to his versatile leadership capabilities. He has held several key appointments across operational, instructional, and strategic roles within the IAF. These include:
- Commanding Officer of a frontline fighter squadron, where he led multiple critical deployments and joint operations.
- Chief Flying Instructor for the Botswana Defence Forces, where he enhanced bilateral military ties and contributed significantly to international military aviation training.
- Leadership roles in the Aircrew Examining Board, ensuring the operational readiness and competence of aircrew across the IAF.
- Command of a major flying base, responsible for complex flight operations in a high-tempo environment.
- Service in the Advance Headquarters of Western Air Command, India’s largest and most active air command, which plays a key role along the borders with Pakistan and China.
- Most recently, he served as the Senior Air Staff Officer (SASO) at South Western Air Command (SWAC), headquartered in Gandhinagar, where he oversaw planning and execution of all air operations in the western theatre.
He also served as the Commandant at the College of Air Warfare, where he played a pivotal role in shaping India’s air power doctrine and training future senior leaders of the IAF.
Strategic Significance of Southern Air Command
The Southern Air Command has increasingly gained strategic importance given the expanding role of the Indian Air Force in the Indian Ocean Region, including Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep. With threats from sea-based platforms, drones, and long-range missiles, the need for robust air dominance and surveillance capabilities in the south has become critical.
Under Air Marshal Khanna’s leadership, the command is expected to:
- Strengthen India’s aerial maritime surveillance posture.
- Enhance coordination with the Indian Navy and Coast Guard for joint operations.
- Support humanitarian aid and disaster relief operations in South India and island territories.
- Play a key role in India’s outreach under the SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) doctrine in the Indian Ocean.
His assumption of command comes at a time when the Indian Air Force is undergoing rapid modernisation, and his leadership will be instrumental in integrating new-age platforms like stealth drones, EW aircraft, and long-range precision weapons into southern operations.

भारतीय वायुसेना के वरिष्ठ नेतृत्व में एक महत्वपूर्ण बदलाव के तहत एयर मार्शल मनीष खन्ना, जिन्हें अति विशिष्ट सेवा पदक (AVSM) और वायु सेना पदक (VM) से सम्मानित किया गया है, ने 01 जून 2025 को दक्षिणी वायु कमान (Southern Air Command) के एयर ऑफिसर कमांडिंग-इन-चीफ (AOC-in-C) के रूप में तिरुवनंतपुरम (केरल) में कार्यभार ग्रहण किया।
दक्षिणी वायु कमान भारत के दक्षिणी प्रायद्वीप, द्वीप क्षेत्रों और हिंद महासागर क्षेत्र में हवाई सुरक्षा का एक महत्वपूर्ण स्तंभ है। मौजूदा समय में हिंद-प्रशांत क्षेत्र में बढ़ते खतरों के बीच एयर मार्शल खन्ना का संचालनात्मक और रणनीतिक अनुभव भारत की दक्षिणी सीमाओं को और मज़बूती देगा।
4000 से अधिक उड़ान घंटे वाले अनुभवी फाइटर पायलट
06 दिसंबर 1986 को भारतीय वायुसेना के फाइटर स्ट्रीम में कमीशन प्राप्त करने वाले एयर मार्शल मनीष खन्ना लगभग चार दशक की शानदार सेवा का अनुभव रखते हैं। वे एक कैटेगरी ‘A’ क्वालिफाइड फ्लाइंग इंस्ट्रक्टर हैं और उन्होंने राष्ट्रीय रक्षा अकादमी (NDA), डिफेंस सर्विसेज स्टाफ कॉलेज (DSSC), कॉलेज ऑफ एयर वारफेयर (CAW) और नेशनल डिफेंस कॉलेज (NDC) से शिक्षा प्राप्त की है।
उन्हें विभिन्न फाइटर और ट्रेनर विमानों पर 4000 घंटे से अधिक की उड़ान का अनुभव है। उन्होंने वायु रक्षा, ग्राउंड अटैक, सामरिक टोही (Strategic Reconnaissance) और इलेक्ट्रॉनिक युद्ध (Electronic Warfare) के क्षेत्रों में गहरी विशेषज्ञता प्राप्त की है—जो आज के नेटवर्क-केंद्रित युद्ध की मुख्य ज़रूरत है।
देश-विदेश में कमान और रणनीति का अनुभव
एयर मार्शल खन्ना ने भारतीय वायुसेना में अनेक प्रमुख कमांड और स्टाफ पदों पर कार्य किया है, जिनमें शामिल हैं:
- फाइटर स्क्वाड्रन के कमांडिंग ऑफिसर, जिनके नेतृत्व में अनेक महत्वपूर्ण अभियान और अभ्यास संपन्न हुए।
- बोत्सवाना डिफेंस फोर्सेस में चीफ फ्लाइंग इंस्ट्रक्टर, जिससे भारत और अफ्रीकी देशों के बीच सैन्य सहयोग को बल मिला।
- एयरक्रू एग्जामिनिंग बोर्ड, जहां उन्होंने पायलटों की दक्षता और योग्यता को सुनिश्चित किया।
- एक प्रमुख फ्लाइंग बेस के कमांडर, जहां तेज़-तर्रार संचालनात्मक वातावरण में उन्होंने नेतृत्व किया।
- वेस्टर्न एयर कमांड के एडवांस हेडक्वार्टर में सेवा, जो पाकिस्तान और चीन से सटे क्षेत्रों की रक्षा का प्रमुख केंद्र है।
- हाल ही में वे दक्षिण पश्चिमी वायु कमान (SWAC) के सीनियर एयर स्टाफ ऑफिसर (SASO) रहे, जहां उन्होंने पश्चिमी सीमाओं पर हवाई संचालन का नेतृत्व किया।
इसके अलावा, उन्होंने कॉलेज ऑफ एयर वारफेयर के कमांडेंट के रूप में भी कार्य किया, जहां वे वायुसेना की रणनीतिक शिक्षा और नेतृत्व विकास में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभा चुके हैं।
दक्षिणी वायु कमान: बढ़ती रणनीतिक महत्ता
भारत के द्वीप क्षेत्रों—जैसे अंडमान-निकोबार और लक्षद्वीप—में बढ़ते रणनीतिक खतरों को देखते हुए दक्षिणी वायु कमान की भूमिका लगातार बढ़ती जा रही है। समुद्री सीमाओं, ड्रोन खतरों और लंबी दूरी की मिसाइल क्षमताओं के दौर में, इस क्षेत्र में हवाई वर्चस्व बनाए रखना बेहद आवश्यक है।
एयर मार्शल खन्ना के नेतृत्व में इस कमान के लिए प्राथमिकताएं होंगी:
- समुद्री निगरानी और हवाई सुरक्षा को और मज़बूत करना।
- भारतीय नौसेना और तटरक्षक बल के साथ संयुक्त अभियान के लिए बेहतर तालमेल।
- दक्षिण भारत और द्वीप क्षेत्रों में आपदा राहत और मानवीय सहायता अभियान में योगदान।
- SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) नीति के तहत हिंद महासागर में भारत की रणनीतिक मौजूदगी को मज़बूती देना।
