Commander of Sri Lanka Army Visits South Western Command in Jaipur, Deepens Bilateral Defence Engagements with India

Jaipur, June 12, 2025 – In a significant moment for India-Sri Lanka defence diplomacy, Lieutenant General BKGM Lasantha Rodrigo, the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, visited the Headquarters South Western Command in Jaipur on the second day of his official India tour from 11th to 14th June 2025. This high-level military interaction marks a crucial step forward in strengthening bilateral military cooperation between the two South Asian neighbours, bound by shared history, regional security interests, and strategic collaboration.
The visiting dignitary was accorded a warm ceremonial welcome by Lieutenant General Manjinder Singh, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), South Western Command. The two military leaders engaged in comprehensive strategic dialogue, exchanging insights on various areas of mutual concern — with a key emphasis on regional security dynamics, interoperability, counter-insurgency strategy, capability development, and exchange of operational best practices.
Military Diplomacy in Action: Strategic Talks at Jaipur HQ
During the visit to South Western Command headquarters, Lt Gen Rodrigo was briefed about the role, operational philosophy, and key activities of the command, which guards a significant portion of India’s western frontier. He interacted with senior Indian Army officers, sharing operational experiences and learning from India’s vast experience in high-intensity conflict environments, desert warfare, and counter-terrorism operations.
A detailed discussion took place on joint training initiatives, especially in the domain of sub-conventional warfare, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), and peacekeeping operations under the United Nations framework. Both sides acknowledged the importance of continued engagement through bilateral exercises like ‘Mitra Shakti’, staff talks, and course exchanges at premier military institutions.
Cultural and Heritage Engagements
In addition to formal military discussions, Lt Gen Rodrigo’s visit also includes a tour of India’s rich military and cultural heritage. He is expected to visit heritage sites and war memorials in Rajasthan, offering him a deeper understanding of India’s military traditions, historical legacy, and civil-military connect.
This blend of operational exchange and cultural diplomacy is seen as a holistic effort to build not just institutional cooperation, but also personal bonds and enduring camaraderie between the two armies.

A formal banquet was hosted in honour of the visiting General by Lt Gen Manjinder Singh, creating an informal platform for fostering leadership-level friendships. The relaxed setting enabled more candid exchanges and personal interactions, vital for building trust and mutual understanding between defence partners.
India-Sri Lanka: Defence Cooperation Built on Decades of Trust
The Indian Army and the Sri Lanka Army share a time-tested relationship rooted in regional solidarity, military professionalism, and shared challenges. India has consistently supported the capacity building of the Sri Lankan armed forces through training, equipment support, and coordinated joint efforts in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
This visit comes at a time when both nations are looking to deepen strategic convergence in maritime security, regional peacekeeping, counter-terrorism, and defence industry collaboration. As both militaries face similar emerging threats — from transnational terrorism to cyber warfare — such high-level engagements are critical to align doctrines, learn from each other’s experiences, and ensure stability in the region.
This visit by the Sri Lanka Army Chief to South Western Command also reaffirms India’s Neighbourhood First Policy, showcasing the nation’s commitment to strengthening defence partnerships with its immediate neighbours based on mutual respect and security cooperation.
