Lt Gen PC Nair, DG, Assam Rifles visited Moreh on 10 Jan 2024, to review the security situation and interact with the soldiers. Gen Nair received a detailed brief by the Sector Commander.
DG later interacted with members of the Civil Society organizations (CSOs). The CSO leaders had a wide representation of the Hill Tribe Council, Kuki Students Organization, Kuki Women’s Union, Human Rights, Kuki Inpi Tengnoupal, Tamil Sangam, Gorkha Samaj Samiti and Manipur Muslims Council.
Moreh township is on the Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur and has seen an increase in violence since the last week of December 2023. During the interaction, Gen Nair mentioned that, Moreh is an exclusive township and is very different from the other towns in Manipur, because of it’s cosmopolitan nature. People from all the communities, the Kuki, Meitei, Naga, Tamil, Pangal, Gorkha, Sikh etc have been residing in Moreh for decades in peace and harmony. Past eight months of strife that was preceded by two years of Covid pandemic has greatly affected the lives of the children and youth. Their future is at stake and thus there is no other alternative but to shun violence. He further stated that, all their grievances will be looked into, however, it is for the people of Moreh, particularly the women, to actively act towards restoration of peace. Sounding a note of caution, he also asked all the civil society groups to inform those, moving around with weapons, that the Central Security Forces shall respond in an appropriate manner, if provoked or targeted. It is in everybody’s interest to work towards restoration of peace. DG also assured that the Assam Rifles will always live upto the sobriquet of “Friends of the North-East” even in the most challenging circumstances.
