Emerging as a Model Policeman, Gujarat Cadre Top Cop Who Cracked the 240 Gold Coins Case

From Mechanical Engineering at IIT Delhi to the Indian Police Service – The Inspiring Journey of the Officer Behind the Navsari Gold Coins Recovery

IPS Sushil Agrawal, a 2017-batch officer of the Gujarat cadre, has become one of the most talked-about names in the state’s policing circles owing to his sharp investigative acumen, proactive field presence, and ability to handle complex cases with precision.

Born on 20 August 1990 in Surat, Gujarat, Agrawal pursued a Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. He later appeared for the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2016, secured an All-India Rank of 224, and joined the Indian Police Service, embarking on a career defined by discipline, intelligence, and dedication.

Currently serving as Superintendent of Police (SP), Vadodara Rural, Agrawal oversees law and order across a wide jurisdiction. His responsibilities include managing high-profile public events such as the India–New Zealand One Day International matches and the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL) fixtures at Vadodara’s Kotambi Stadium, where he has ensured seamless security arrangements.

The Navsari Gold Coins Case: A Defining Investigation

Agrawal first rose to prominence during his tenure as SP of Navsari, where he successfully solved a sensational case involving the theft of 240 British-era gold coins.

The case began when a woman, residing abroad, entrusted a contractor with the renovation of her house. The contractor, in turn, engaged tribal laborers from Madhya Pradesh, who stumbled upon 240 gold coins concealed within a wall. Instead of reporting the discovery through proper channels, disputes erupted, and allegations surfaced that some local police officers were complicit, leading to arrests in Madhya Pradesh.

Under Agrawal’s leadership, the Navsari Crime Branch:

Conducted extensive field operations in Madhya Pradesh

Established a police camp in the state to monitor the investigation closely

Successfully recovered all 240 gold coins, which were subsequently handed over to the court

Cleared the names of several innocent police officers who had been wrongly implicated

This case highlighted Agrawal’s patience, strategic thinking, and ability to coordinate complex field operations, earning him widespread recognition and respect across Gujarat.

Achievements as SP, Vadodara Rural

Since his transfer to Vadodara Rural in August 2025, Agrawal has continued to demonstrate remarkable efficiency in crime detection and law enforcement. Within just five months, he has overseen several high-profile cases, including:

Investigations into robberies at Jain temples

Resolution of a shocking murder case in Padra, where a daughter and her lover killed her father

A decisive crackdown on liquor mafia kingpin Lala Jaiswal, who was linked to 32 criminal cases. Properties worth ₹102 crore were seized under the stringent GUJCTOC Act during this operation

Beyond crime-solving, Agrawal has also ensured robust security arrangements during national and international sporting events, balancing the demands of public safety with the complexities of large-scale event management.
