Chandigarh: India’s great sprinter Milkha Singh died on Friday after battling corona infection for a month. Earlier, his wife and former Indian volleyball team captain Nirmal Kaur also died due to corona infection. Padmashree Milkha Singh was 91 years old. He is survived by his son golfer Jeev Milkha Singh and three daughters.
A spokesman for his family said that he breathed his last at 11:30 pm. His condition was bad since evening and oxygen had also decreased along with fever. He was admitted in the ICU of PGIMER here. He had corona last month and his report came negative on Wednesday. He was shifted to General ICU. His condition had stabilized before Thursday evening. His wife Nirmal, 85, died on Sunday at a private hospital.

Milkha, a four-time Asian Games gold medalist, had also won the yellow medal at the 1958 Commonwealth Games. His best performance, however, was at the 1960 Rome Olympics in which he finished fourth in the 400m final. He also represented India in 1956 and 1964 Olympics. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1959.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of India’s great sprinter Milkha Singh, saying that India has lost such a great player whose life will continue to inspire the budding sportspersons. Modi tweeted that in the passing away of Milkha Singh ji, we have lost a great sportsperson who had a special place in the hearts of countless Indians. He was loved by millions with his inspiring personality. I am hurt by his death. He further wrote that I had spoken to Milkha Singh ji a few days back. I didn’t know it would be our last. Many budding players will get inspiration from his life. My condolences to his family and his fans around the world.
