From Selling Milk to Army Lieutenant: The Inspiring Journey of Karishma Thakur from Mandi
Her journey not only represents a personal triumph but also serves as an inspiring testament to the strength and resilience of women in the face of adversity. Karishma’s story is a beacon of hope and determination, showcasing how unyielding dedication can indeed fulfill dreams against challenging odds.
In a heartwarming tale of perseverance and commitment, Karishma Thakur, a young woman from the village of Kothi Gaihri in Himachal Pradesh, has transformed her lifelong dream of serving in the Indian Army into a tangible reality.
Her journey has been marked by adversity and determination, particularly following the passing of her father, Lalit Sharma, in 2017.
After this tragic event, Karishma’s mother, Drumati Devi, became the family’s sole provider, taking on the challenge of raising five children while starting a dairy business to support their education. Her resilience and hard work included selling cow milk and laboring under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA).
This dedication allowed Karishma and her siblings to continue their education, despite the financial strain placed on the family.
As the youngest of four sisters, Karishma’s aspiration to join the army was ignited from a young age. She enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts program at Vallabh Government College in Mandi and took an active role in the National Cadet Corps (NCC). Karishma’s commitment paid off when she became the first student from her college to participate in the prestigious NCC national camp, which fortified her ambition of a military career.
Her path to joining the Indian Army is now firmly set, as she has been selected for training at the Officers Training Academy in Chennai, slated to begin this December. Commuting daily from Rewalsar to Mandi—a challenging 20-kilometer journey—had its difficulties, particularly when balancing her studies and preparation for police recruitment exams.
For the past year, Karishma has opted to stay in a hostel in Mandi, allowing her more time to focus on her academic and military ambitions.
When Drumati Devi first heard the news of her daughter’s selection, she struggled to believe the moment was real. It wasn’t until the reality of Karishma’s achievement sank in that tears of joy filled her eyes. Reflecting on the struggles of raising her children after losing her husband, Drumati expressed profound pride in her daughter’s accomplishments.
Her journey not only represents a personal triumph but also serves as an inspiring testament to the strength and resilience of women in the face of adversity. Karishma’s story is a beacon of hope and determination, showcasing how unyielding dedication can indeed fulfill dreams against challenging odds.
