BIKANER, RAJASTHAN: Reinforcing the Indian Army’s emphasis on operational preparedness, technological transformation and mission-oriented capability enhancement, Lieutenant General Mohit Malhotra, Army Commander, Sapta Shakti Command, reviewed the operational readiness of troops deployed in forward areas and interacted with personnel during his visit to the Mahajan Field Firing Range in Bikaner, Rajasthan.
The visit assumed significance against the backdrop of the Indian Army’s continued focus on maintaining a high state of combat preparedness across diverse operational environments. During the visit, the Army Commander assessed the preparedness of formations and units and took stock of the operational orientation of troops deployed in forward areas.
Lieutenant General Mohit Malhotra interacted with officers, junior commissioned officers and soldiers, and commended the troops for maintaining a high level of readiness and professionalism. His interaction with the troops also provided an opportunity to review the challenges associated with modern battlefield environments and the evolving requirements of contemporary warfare.
Also present during the visit was Lieutenant General V.S. Deshpande, Corps Commander, who accompanied the Army Commander during the operational review.
The Mahajan Field Firing Range in Bikaner remains an important training and validation environment for the Indian Army, particularly for formations operating in the western sector. The vast desert terrain provides an opportunity to train troops in realistic conditions and evaluate tactics, weapon employment, battlefield procedures and operational concepts under demanding circumstances.
During the interaction, Lieutenant General Mohit Malhotra emphasised that operational readiness cannot remain static. He stressed the need for continuous transformation in order to remain prepared for the rapidly changing character of warfare.
The Army Commander called for the continued evolution of warfighting concepts, ensuring that operational doctrines and battlefield practices remain aligned with emerging threats and technological developments.
He further emphasised mission-oriented technology absorption, underlining the importance of integrating relevant technologies into military operations in a manner that directly enhances battlefield effectiveness. The focus remains not merely on acquiring new technologies but on ensuring that these capabilities are absorbed, integrated and employed effectively by soldiers and commanders at the tactical, operational and higher levels.
The Army Commander also highlighted the importance of continuous capability enhancement, stressing that modern warfare demands an integrated approach involving trained manpower, contemporary weapon systems, advanced surveillance and communications capabilities, battlefield awareness and rapid decision-making.
The interaction at Mahajan also underlined the importance of keeping soldiers prepared for the realities of a technology-intensive battlefield. From enhanced situational awareness to faster decision cycles and increasingly complex operational environments, the modern battlefield requires formations to continuously adapt.
For the troops operating under Sapta Shakti Command, operational preparedness remains a continuous process. The Army’s focus is increasingly shifting towards building formations that can respond rapidly, operate effectively in challenging terrain and integrate emerging technologies into established military concepts.
The visit also provided an opportunity for the senior leadership to engage directly with troops and understand their operational requirements. Such interactions remain an important component of maintaining combat readiness, strengthening leadership at the field level and ensuring that operational priorities are clearly understood across the chain of command.
The Mahajan Field Firing Range, with its extensive desert environment, continues to provide a realistic setting for validating military skills and operational concepts. The region’s demanding terrain and climatic conditions add another layer to the training requirements of formations operating in the western sector.
The Army Commander’s message was clear: operational preparedness must evolve continuously with the changing character of warfare. The Indian Army’s ability to maintain an operational edge will increasingly depend on how effectively it combines human expertise, battlefield experience, technology and innovative warfighting concepts.
The visit reflected the broader transformation underway within the Indian Army, where traditional military skills are increasingly being integrated with emerging technologies and new operational approaches.
“Transforming Today. Ready for Tomorrow” emerged as the central message from the operational review — a reminder that battlefield preparedness is not a one-time achievement but a continuous cycle of training, transformation, technology absorption and capability enhancement.
With forward formations maintaining a high level of readiness and senior commanders continuing to review operational preparedness at the field level, the Indian Army remains focused on ensuring that its formations are prepared to respond effectively to emerging operational challenges.
At the Mahajan Field Firing Range, Bikaner, that approach was once again reflected in the Army’s emphasis on readiness, adaptation and continuous transformation.

“Transforming Today. Ready for Tomorrow.”
