Initial Phase Led by INS Vikrant, INS Udaygiri and INS Sukanya: From Relief Distribution to Heli-Borne SAR Missions
Before the four new ships sailed out, the first phase of Operation Sagar Bandhu had already seen India making decisive interventions. INS Vikrant, INS Udaygiri and INS Sukanya were the first to reach Sri Lanka soon after the cyclone struck, delivering relief stores and conducting heli-borne Search and Rescue operations across remote and severely affected regions.
Particularly, INS Vikrant’s advanced helicopters proved crucial in rescuing stranded civilians, delivering emergency medical kits and supporting Sri Lankan authorities with rapid aerial assessments. The initial phase laid the foundation upon which the subsequent large-scale maritime relief effort is now expanding.
Three LCUs Reach Colombo on 07 December: Deliver the Largest Consignment of Ground Relief Support
On 07 December, the Indian Navy’s LCU 54, LCU 51 and LCU 57 arrived at Colombo Port, offloading substantial quantities of relief materials. Their arrival brought immediate hope to thousands battling shortages of food, water and medical resources.
Upon disembarkation, Sri Lankan disaster management teams, supported by naval units from both nations, started transporting relief material to the worst-hit coastal regions. The coordination between the two navies ensured that the supplies would reach communities where roads were damaged, communication networks collapsed and access was nearly impossible.
INS Gharial to Reach Trincomalee on 08 December: Delivering Medical and Engineering Support for Critical Areas
One of the most crucial components of this phase of Operation Sagar Bandhu is the deployment of INS Gharial, which is scheduled to reach Trincomalee on 08 December 2025. The ship carries large medical consignments, heavy engineering equipment, hospital supplies and technical teams capable of supporting damaged health facilities.
With naval doctors, paramedics and divers on board, INS Gharial’s arrival is expected to strengthen emergency medical response in districts where hospitals remain overcrowded and resources exhausted. Its role will be vital in ensuring that life-saving support reaches communities that suffered the worst of the cyclone’s brutality.

भारतीय नौसेना के तीन Landing Craft Utility जहाज—LCU 54, LCU 51 और LCU 57—7 दिसंबर की सुबह कोलंबो बंदरगाह पर पहुंचे, जहां उन्होंने श्रीलंका सरकार को भारी मात्रा में राहत सामग्री सौंपी। यह आगमन केवल रसद नहीं था, बल्कि एक मनोवैज्ञानिक संबल भी था। कोलंबो बंदरगाह पर भारतीय नौसैनिकों का उतरना हजारों प्रभावित परिवारों के लिए यह संदेश था कि वे अकेले नहीं हैं।
इन जहाजों द्वारा लाई गई सामग्री को तुरंत श्रीलंका की आपदा प्रबंधन एजेंसियों ने दक्षिण और पश्चिमी तट के उन इलाकों में भेजना शुरू किया जहां सड़कें टूटी थीं, अस्पताल जलमग्न थे और बिजली व्यवस्था पूरी तरह चरमरा गई थी। भारतीय नौसेना की टीमों ने श्रीलंका नौसेना के साथ मिलकर वितरण योजना पर काम किया और प्राथमिकता तय की कि किन जगहों पर तुरंत सहायता पहुंचाना सबसे आवश्यक है।
INS Gharial का Trincomalee आगमन—चिकित्सा और इंजीनियरिंग समर्थन की बड़ी सामरिक खेप
चारों तैनात जहाजों में INS Gharial की भूमिका सबसे अहम है। यह विशेष रूप से डिज़ाइन किया गया Landing Ship Tank पोत भारी इंजीनियरिंग उपकरण, बड़े मेडिकल कंसाइनमेंट, अस्पतालों के लिए आवश्यक दवाइयां और इमरजेंसी मशीनरी लेकर 8 दिसंबर को Trincomalee पहुंचने वाला है।
इस जहाज पर मौजूद नौसैनिक डॉक्टरों, पैरामेडिकल टीमों और गोताखोरों की विशेष इकाई को आवश्यकता पड़ने पर तत्काल राहत शिविरों में उतारा जा सकता है। INS Gharial का यह दौरा श्रीलंका के उन अस्पतालों को राहत देने में महत्वपूर्ण होगा, जो इस समय बड़ी संख्या में घायलों और रोगियों के दबाव में काम कर रहे हैं।

COVID-19 महामारी के दौरान राहत सामग्री से लेकर अफ्रीकी देशों में चक्रवात राहत और मॉरीशस में पर्यावरणीय आपदा के दौरान तेल रिसाव रोकने तक—भारत ने हमेशा “First Responder in IOR” का परिचय दिया है। ऑपरेशन सागर बंधु इस नीति को और अधिक मजबूत करता है और यह दर्शाता है कि भारत का मानवीय सहयोग केवल कूटनीति नहीं बल्कि एक परंपरा है।
श्रीलंका में तबाही का व्यापक दायरा—घरों से लेकर अस्पतालों तक सब प्रभावित
श्रीलंका इस समय भारी संकट से जूझ रहा है। चक्रवात के कारण तटीय क्षेत्रों में बिजली व्यवस्था ध्वस्त हो गई है, सड़कें टूट गई हैं, पुल बह गए हैं और हजारों परिवारों ने अपने घर खो दिए हैं। कई अस्पताल जलमग्न हो गए हैं और कई जगहों पर पीने के पानी की भारी कमी हो गई है।
ऐसे में भारत की ओर से भेजी गई राहत सामग्री और नौसैनिक टीमें श्रीलंका के लिए एक नई उम्मीद बनकर उभरी हैं। भारत के हस्तक्षेप ने न केवल संकट कम किया है, बल्कि राहत वितरण की क्षमता को भी कई गुना बढ़ा दिया है।
भारत–श्रीलंका रिश्तों का नया अध्याय—संकट की घड़ी में मिला भरोसे का साथ
ऑपरेशन सागर बंधु केवल राहत मिशन नहीं है, बल्कि यह भारत और श्रीलंका के बीच दशकों से चले आ रहे भरोसे, सहयोग और सांस्कृतिक संबंधों को पुनर्परिभाषित करने वाला क्षण भी है। भारत द्वारा सात युद्धपोतों की तैनाती और 1000 टन राहत सामग्री भेजना इस बात का स्पष्ट संकेत है कि दोनों देशों के बीच मानवीय संबंध कितने गहरे हैं।
