As modern warfare rapidly shifts from conventional battlefields to technology-driven conflicts, the Indian Army is significantly accelerating its efforts to achieve self-reliance in defence technology. Demonstrating this strategic transformation, Lt Gen Amardeep Singh Aujla, Director General Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (DGEME), accompanied by Lt Gen Rajiv K Sahni, Commandant of the Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME), visited the 509 Army Base Workshop to review its technological capabilities, modernization initiatives, and future roadmap.
The visit underscored the Indian Army’s growing focus on indigenous innovation, advanced engineering, artificial intelligence-enabled maintenance systems, drone warfare preparedness, and Industry 5.0 integration. The workshop has emerged as one of the Army’s premier centres for developing, repairing, upgrading and sustaining sophisticated military technologies that directly contribute to operational readiness across the Armed Forces.
During the visit, senior officers were briefed on ongoing projects involving cutting-edge battlefield technologies, including Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (Counter-UAS), advanced Thermal Imagers, Weapon Locating Radars, modern electronic warfare support systems, and highly specialized telecommunication repair facilities. These technologies are increasingly becoming indispensable in contemporary conflicts where drones, precision strikes, electronic warfare and network-centric operations dominate the battlefield.
The leadership reviewed how indigenous engineering capabilities are reducing dependence on imported defence equipment while simultaneously improving the Army’s ability to maintain mission-critical systems within the country. By strengthening domestic repair, overhaul and upgrade capabilities, the Army aims to ensure faster operational availability of strategic assets and greater resilience during prolonged military operations.
A major highlight of the review was the workshop’s adoption of Industry 5.0 principles, emphasizing smart manufacturing, digital engineering, automation, predictive maintenance, robotics, data-driven logistics and human-machine collaboration. These initiatives are expected to transform military maintenance from reactive repairs to predictive and intelligent sustainment, significantly improving equipment reliability and reducing downtime.
The Army leadership also appreciated the workshop’s close collaboration with Indian defence industries, research institutions and innovation ecosystems under the broader vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Such partnerships are enabling the rapid development of indigenous technologies tailored specifically for India’s operational requirements while strengthening the domestic defence industrial base.
Officials highlighted that future wars will increasingly depend on technological superiority rather than numerical strength alone. Artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, electronic warfare, cyber resilience, advanced sensors, secure communication networks and precision surveillance are now becoming decisive force multipliers. Facilities like the 509 Army Base Workshop therefore play a crucial role in ensuring that Indian soldiers are equipped with reliable, modern and indigenously supported battlefield systems.
The review also focused on improving lifecycle support for sophisticated military platforms through digital diagnostics, modern testing facilities and faster repair cycles. This approach is expected to reduce equipment downtime, enhance battlefield availability and optimize logistics support for frontline formations deployed across diverse operational environments.
The visit reflects the Indian Army’s broader modernization strategy, where innovation, indigenous manufacturing and technological excellence are becoming central pillars of national security. As India continues investing in next-generation military capabilities, institutions like the 509 Army Base Workshop are emerging as key drivers of defence transformation, ensuring that the country’s armed forces remain technologically superior, operationally prepared and strategically self-reliant.
The review concluded with renewed emphasis on accelerating indigenous defence innovation, strengthening collaboration with industry and academia, and building a future-ready military ecosystem capable of meeting the evolving challenges of twenty-first-century warfare. आधुनिक युद्ध का स्वरूप तेजी से बदल रहा है। आज की लड़ाइयां केवल टैंक, तोप और मिसाइलों से नहीं, बल्कि ड्रोन, कृत्रिम बुद्धिमत्ता (AI), इलेक्ट्रॉनिक वारफेयर, नेटवर्क आधारित संचार और अत्याधुनिक सेंसर तकनीकों से तय हो रही हैं। इसी बदलते सैन्य परिदृश्य को ध्यान में रखते हुए भारतीय सेना स्वदेशी तकनीक और आत्मनिर्भर रक्षा उत्पादन की दिशा में लगातार आगे बढ़ रही है। इसी क्रम में डायरेक्टर जनरल इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स एंड मैकेनिकल इंजीनियर्स (DGEME) लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल अमरदीप सिंह औजला तथा मिलिट्री कॉलेज ऑफ इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स एंड मैकेनिकल इंजीनियरिंग (MCEME) के कमांडेंट लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल राजीव के. साहनी ने 509 आर्मी बेस वर्कशॉप का दौरा कर वहां चल रही अत्याधुनिक परियोजनाओं और भविष्य की तकनीकी योजनाओं की विस्तृत समीक्षा की।
यह दौरा भारतीय सेना की उस सोच को दर्शाता है जिसमें युद्ध की तैयारी केवल हथियार खरीदने तक सीमित नहीं है, बल्कि उन्हें देश में ही विकसित करने, उन्नत बनाने, मरम्मत करने और लगातार आधुनिक बनाए रखने पर भी समान रूप से जोर दिया जा रहा है। 509 आर्मी बेस वर्कशॉप आज भारतीय सेना की उन प्रमुख तकनीकी इकाइयों में शामिल हो चुकी है जो भविष्य के युद्धक्षेत्र के लिए आवश्यक सैन्य प्रणालियों के रखरखाव और आधुनिकीकरण का महत्वपूर्ण कार्य कर रही हैं।
दौरे के दौरान वरिष्ठ अधिकारियों को काउंटर-यूएएस (Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems), अत्याधुनिक थर्मल इमेजर, वेपन लोकेटिंग रडार, आधुनिक दूरसंचार मरम्मत सुविधाओं, इलेक्ट्रॉनिक सैन्य प्रणालियों तथा विभिन्न अत्याधुनिक उपकरणों की प्रगति के बारे में विस्तृत जानकारी दी गई। वर्तमान समय में ड्रोन हमलों, इलेक्ट्रॉनिक जैमिंग और लंबी दूरी की सटीक मारक क्षमता वाले हथियारों के बढ़ते उपयोग को देखते हुए ये सभी तकनीकें भारतीय सेना के लिए अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण बन चुकी हैं।
समीक्षा के दौरान इस बात पर विशेष बल दिया गया कि रक्षा उपकरणों के रखरखाव, उन्नयन और मरम्मत की स्वदेशी क्षमता विकसित होने से विदेशी आयात पर निर्भरता लगातार कम होगी। इसके साथ ही युद्ध जैसी परिस्थितियों में महत्वपूर्ण सैन्य उपकरणों को शीघ्रता से पुनः सेवा में लाने की क्षमता भी कई गुना बढ़ जाएगी।
509 आर्मी बेस वर्कशॉप में इंडस्ट्री 5.0 की अवधारणा को भी तेजी से लागू किया जा रहा है। इसके अंतर्गत स्मार्ट मैन्युफैक्चरिंग, ऑटोमेशन, रोबोटिक्स, डिजिटल इंजीनियरिंग, डेटा आधारित प्रेडिक्टिव मेंटेनेंस, मानव और मशीन के समन्वय तथा आधुनिक गुणवत्ता नियंत्रण प्रणालियों को अपनाया जा रहा है। इससे सैन्य उपकरणों की विश्वसनीयता बढ़ेगी, रखरखाव का समय कम होगा और युद्ध के दौरान उनकी उपलब्धता अधिक सुनिश्चित होगी।
वरिष्ठ अधिकारियों ने आत्मनिर्भर भारत अभियान के तहत भारतीय रक्षा उद्योग, अनुसंधान संस्थानों और स्टार्टअप इकोसिस्टम के साथ बढ़ते सहयोग की भी सराहना की। इससे भारतीय सेना की आवश्यकताओं के अनुरूप स्वदेशी समाधान विकसित किए जा रहे हैं, जो न केवल लागत कम करेंगे बल्कि राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा को भी अधिक मजबूत बनाएंगे।
समीक्षा के दौरान इस बात पर भी जोर दिया गया कि भविष्य के युद्धों में जीत केवल सैनिकों की संख्या से नहीं बल्कि तकनीकी श्रेष्ठता से तय होगी। कृत्रिम बुद्धिमत्ता, स्वायत्त प्रणालियां, साइबर सुरक्षा, इलेक्ट्रॉनिक युद्ध, सुरक्षित संचार नेटवर्क, उन्नत निगरानी प्रणाली और सटीक लक्ष्य पहचान जैसी क्षमताएं आने वाले समय में निर्णायक भूमिका निभाएंगी। ऐसे में 509 आर्मी बेस वर्कशॉप जैसी संस्थाएं भारतीय सेना को तकनीकी रूप से भविष्य के लिए तैयार करने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभा रही हैं।
बैठक में उपकरणों के पूरे जीवनचक्र के दौरान उनके रखरखाव, डिजिटल डायग्नोस्टिक्स, तेज मरम्मत व्यवस्था और आधुनिक परीक्षण सुविधाओं पर भी विस्तार से चर्चा हुई। इन पहलों का उद्देश्य युद्ध के समय उपकरणों की उपलब्धता बढ़ाना, लॉजिस्टिक दक्षता में सुधार करना और अग्रिम मोर्चों पर तैनात सैनिकों को निरंतर तकनीकी सहायता उपलब्ध कराना है।
यह दौरा स्पष्ट संकेत देता है कि भारतीय सेना अब केवल आधुनिक हथियारों की खरीद तक सीमित नहीं है, बल्कि स्वदेशी तकनीकी विकास, अनुसंधान, नवाचार और उन्नत इंजीनियरिंग के माध्यम से भविष्य के युद्धक्षेत्र की तैयारी कर रही है। 509 आर्मी बेस वर्कशॉप इसी परिवर्तन का सशक्त प्रतीक बनकर उभर रही है, जहां विकसित हो रही तकनीकें आने वाले वर्षों में भारतीय सेना की युद्ध क्षमता को नई ऊंचाइयों तक पहुंचाने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाएंगी।
भारत का लक्ष्य स्पष्ट है—कम आयात, अधिक नवाचार, अधिकतम युद्ध क्षमता और पूर्ण तकनीकी आत्मनिर्भरता। आने वाले समय में यही स्वदेशी तकनीकें भारतीय सशस्त्र बलों की सबसे बड़ी शक्ति और भविष्य के युद्धों में निर्णायक बढ़त साबित होंगी।
