Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia | 13 June 2025 – In a powerful display of international military cooperation, the 17th edition of the India-Mongolia Joint Military Exercise NOMADIC ELEPHANT concluded with full honours in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The closing ceremony was attended by India’s Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh, accompanied by Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh, Director General Operational Logistics and Strategic Movement, Indian Army.
The two-week-long exercise witnessed the participation of a 45-member strong Indian Army contingent, largely comprising soldiers from the ARUNACHAL SCOUTS — a specialised unit trained for high-altitude and mountainous warfare. Their presence not only highlighted India’s commitment to strategic regional partnerships but also reaffirmed the importance of operational readiness in diverse terrain under complex mission profiles.
Focus on Joint Training and Interoperability
Exercise NOMADIC ELEPHANT was designed with a comprehensive focus on enhancing interoperability between the Indian Army and the Mongolian Armed Forces. The forces trained together in semi-urban and mountainous terrain, simulating semi-conventional warfare under a United Nations peacekeeping mandate.
Troops from both nations jointly conducted drills, simulated operations in counter-insurgency environments, and practiced tactical coordination. From hostage rescue scenarios to intelligence-driven raids and logistics management in mountainous terrain, the exercise covered wide-ranging military aspects.
Defence Secretary’s Address: Symbol of Enduring Friendship
Addressing the closing ceremony, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh lauded the soldiers of both nations for their professionalism, camaraderie, and discipline throughout the duration of the joint training.
“Exercise NOMADIC ELEPHANT is a living testament to the deep-rooted friendship, mutual trust, and shared cultural linkages between India and Mongolia,” said the Defence Secretary. “India’s participation reaffirms our unwavering commitment to regional peace, stability, and responsible global peacekeeping.”
He highlighted how joint initiatives like this not only strengthen defence diplomacy but also underscore India’s growing stature as a reliable security partner on the global stage.
India’s Role in Global Peacekeeping and Regional Security
The participation of ARUNACHAL SCOUTS, known for their adaptability in rugged terrains, sent a strong signal of India’s specialised mountain warfare capabilities. The synergy and mutual learning achieved in this exercise are expected to contribute significantly to future multinational operations, particularly under the banner of the United Nations.
This exercise also offered Indian troops an opportunity to operate alongside foreign contingents, further enriching their exposure to international operational doctrines and collaborative strategies.
Looking Ahead: KHAAN QUEST 2025 Begins
Continuing India’s active participation in global military engagements, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh will also attend the Opening Ceremony of the Multinational Joint Military Exercise KHAAN QUEST 2025 tomorrow, scheduled to be conducted at the same location from 14th to 28th June 2025.
Indian Army troops will be a key part of this prestigious multinational exercise, which brings together armed forces from across the globe to promote military diplomacy, training and peacekeeping cooperation.
Strategic Significance
The dual participation in NOMADIC ELEPHANT and KHAAN QUEST underlines India’s deepening strategic cooperation with Mongolia — a key partner in the Indo-Pacific region. These joint exercises are a clear indicator of New Delhi’s expanding defence diplomacy footprint, particularly in Central and East Asia.

उलानबाटर, मंगोलिया | 13 जून 2025 – भारत और मंगोलिया के बीच द्विपक्षीय सैन्य सहयोग को और गहराई देने वाले सैन्य अभ्यास NOMADIC ELEPHANT-2025 का 17वां संस्करण उलानबाटर में संपन्न हो गया। समापन समारोह में भारत सरकार के रक्षा सचिव श्री राजेश कुमार सिंह तथा लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल पुष्पेन्द्र सिंह (महानिदेशक परिचालन लॉजिस्टिक्स और सामरिक गतिक्रमण, भारतीय सेना) ने भाग लिया।
इस दो सप्ताह लंबे सैन्य अभ्यास में भारत की ओर से 45 सैनिकों का एक दल भाग ले रहा था, जिसमें अधिकांश जवान अरुणाचल स्काउट्स बटालियन से थे – जो पहाड़ी और दुर्गम क्षेत्रों में संचालन के लिए विशेष रूप से प्रशिक्षित होते हैं।
संयुक्त प्रशिक्षण और इंटरऑपरेबिलिटी पर फोकस
अभ्यास का मुख्य उद्देश्य था संयुक्त कार्यबल के रूप में सामरिक समन्वय को मजबूत करना, खासकर अर्ध-शहरी और पर्वतीय इलाकों में संयुक्त राष्ट्र के शांति मिशन पर आधारित परिदृश्यों में। अभ्यास में दोनों सेनाओं ने बगैर वास्तविक गोलाबारी के युद्ध अभ्यास किया, जिसमें बंधक मुक्ति, गुप्त सूचना पर कार्रवाई, पर्वतीय रसद और कम्युनिकेशन ऑपरेशन शामिल थे।

समापन समारोह को संबोधित करते हुए रक्षा सचिव ने भारतीय और मंगोलियाई सैनिकों की पेशेवर क्षमता, समर्पण और अनुशासन की सराहना की।
“अभ्यास NOMADIC ELEPHANT भारत और मंगोलिया के बीच दीर्घकालिक मित्रता, आपसी विश्वास और सांस्कृतिक संबंधों का जीवंत प्रमाण है,” उन्होंने कहा। “यह अभ्यास क्षेत्रीय शांति व स्थिरता के प्रति भारत की प्रतिबद्धता को दर्शाता है और वैश्विक शांति अभियानों में हमारी भूमिका को मजबूत करता है।”
उन्होंने कहा कि इस प्रकार के अभ्यास भारत की रक्षा कूटनीति और वैश्विक भूमिका को और अधिक सशक्त बनाते हैं।
UN शांति मिशनों में भारत की अहम भूमिका
अरुणाचल स्काउट्स जैसे पर्वतीय क्षेत्र में कार्यरत दलों की भागीदारी ने भारत की विशेष क्षमताओं को दर्शाया। इस अभ्यास से उन्हें अन्य सेनाओं के साथ कार्य करने और संयुक्त सैन्य सिद्धांतों से सीखने का अवसर मिला।
अब ‘खान क्वेस्ट 2025’ की बारी
अब रक्षा सचिव KHAAN QUEST 2025 बहुराष्ट्रीय सैन्य अभ्यास के उद्घाटन समारोह में भाग लेंगे, जो 14 से 28 जून 2025 तक उलानबाटर में ही आयोजित होगा। इसमें भारतीय सेना का एक दल भी भाग ले रहा है, जो भारत की वैश्विक सैन्य सहभागिता को और आगे बढ़ाएगा।
रणनीतिक महत्व
NOMADIC ELEPHANT और KHAAN QUEST दोनों अभ्यास भारत और मंगोलिया के बीच सुरक्षा सहयोग और रक्षा कूटनीति के मजबूत होने का संकेत हैं। ये अभ्यास इंडो-पैसिफिक क्षेत्र में भारत की रणनीतिक स्थिति को और अधिक सुदृढ़ करते हैं।
