Indian Air Force Flexes Air Power in ‘Exercise Aakraman’ in Central Sector
Massive Air Drill Involving Rafales, Su-30MKIs Underway
In a significant show of strength and readiness, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has launched a high-intensity combat exercise named ‘Exercise Aakraman’ in the Central Sector of India. The drill involves a strategic deployment of frontline combat aircraft, including Rafale fighter jets, Su-30 MKIs, and other assets, reaffirming India’s air dominance and rapid operational capabilities in mountainous and plateau terrain.
The ongoing exercise, which spans several days, is being held amid heightened regional tensions and evolving geopolitical dynamics. According to senior IAF officials, Exercise Aakraman is designed to simulate full-spectrum air combat operations, deep strike missions, and integrated air defence scenarios in a realistic battle environment. The Central Sector — covering regions in and around Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh — has been of particular strategic interest due to its proximity to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.
The Rafale fighters, inducted into the IAF from France under an emergency procurement in 2020, are spearheading long-range strike operations. Known for their multirole versatility, the Rafales are being complemented by Su-30 MKIs, India’s air superiority workhorse, in complex joint sorties that include air-to-air combat, ground attack missions, and coordinated refuelling support using IL-78 mid-air tankers.
Sources within the defence establishment confirm that Exercise Aakraman also involves the use of precision-guided munitions, electronic warfare suites, night flying, and real-time battlefield simulations. The goal is to validate IAF’s ability to execute precision strikes, operate in contested airspace, and neutralize high-value targets deep within enemy territory — all while maintaining a high tempo of operations over an extended period.
The Air Defence Command and Control Centres have also been put on alert during the drill to test seamless coordination across squadrons, radars, and air bases in the region. Surface-to-air missile systems and mobile radar units are actively tracking simulated intrusions to fine-tune interception and response protocols.
IAF officials emphasize that ‘Aakraman’ is not aimed at any specific country but is part of regular operational preparedness drills. However, the scale and timing of the exercise have drawn attention, especially given the continued militarization along the Himalayan frontier and the strategic competition in the Indo-Pacific region.
This exercise comes on the heels of similar drills conducted by the Indian Army and Navy, underlining India’s approach to jointness and integration in future warfighting. With the creation of theatre commands on the horizon, such exercises offer a crucial glimpse into the evolution of India’s war doctrine, where air power plays a dominant and decisive role.
INDIA’S DETERRENCE POSTURE
Strategic analysts note that the high-tempo operations in the Central Sector also serve as a deterrence message to adversaries. The deployment of Rafales and Su-30MKIs from different airbases showcases the IAF’s ability to rapidly reposition assets and sustain operations in high-altitude and logistically challenging environments.
Notably, the Central Sector has seen increasing Chinese infrastructure development on their side of the LAC. India’s response, both infrastructural and operational, reflects a calibrated yet resolute approach. Exercises like Aakraman are crucial in signalling operational readiness without escalating tensions unnecessarily.
The Indian Air Force is also using this opportunity to test the interoperability of its new platforms, including integration with indigenous technologies such as Astra air-to-air missiles, DRDO’s electronic warfare pods, and Make-in-India tactical communication systems.

केंद्रीय सेक्टर में भारतीय वायुसेना ने अपना सबसे बड़ा युद्धाभ्यास ‘एक्सरसाइज आक्रमण’ शुरू कर दिया है। इस अभ्यास में राफेल, सुखोई-30 MKI और अन्य अग्रिम पंक्ति के लड़ाकू विमान शामिल हैं, जो वायुसेना की तैयारियों, आक्रामक क्षमता और समन्वय कौशल को दर्शाता है।
यह अभ्यास ऐसे समय में हो रहा है जब भारत के रणनीतिक हितों वाले क्षेत्रों में सुरक्षा चुनौतियाँ बढ़ रही हैं। यह क्षेत्र, खासकर उत्तराखंड और हिमाचल प्रदेश का सीमावर्ती इलाका, चीन के साथ लगती वास्तविक नियंत्रण रेखा (LAC) के करीब है, जिसे लेकर गत वर्षों में कई बार तनाव देखा गया है।
राफेल फाइटर जेट्स, जिन्हें 2020 में फ्रांस से विशेष सौदे के तहत भारतीय वायुसेना में शामिल किया गया था, इस अभ्यास में गहरे हमले और लंबी दूरी के मिशनों का नेतृत्व कर रहे हैं। इनके साथ सुखोई-30 एमकेआई संयुक्त अभियानों में भाग ले रहे हैं, जिनमें वायु युद्ध, ग्राउंड अटैक और IL-78 एयर टैंकर से मिड-एयर रिफ्यूलिंग शामिल है।
अभ्यास में रात के समय मिशन, इलेक्ट्रॉनिक वॉरफेयर, प्रेसिशन गाइडेड म्यूनिशन और लाइव सिमुलेशन जैसे अत्याधुनिक तकनीकों का उपयोग किया जा रहा है। वायुसेना के अनुसार, इसका मुख्य उद्देश्य है तेज गति और दीर्घकालिक ऑपरेशनल स्थायित्व को परखना।
एयर डिफेंस कंट्रोल सेंटर्स को अलर्ट मोड पर रखा गया है और सतह से हवा में मार करने वाली मिसाइलें, मोबाइल राडार यूनिट्स, और निगरानी प्रणालियाँ पूरी तरह सक्रिय हैं, ताकि किसी भी हवाई घुसपैठ का त्वरित और समन्वित जवाब तैयार किया जा सके।
IAF ने स्पष्ट किया है कि यह अभ्यास किसी एक देश को लक्ष्य नहीं बनाता, बल्कि यह नियमित तैयारियों का हिस्सा है। लेकिन इसका भौगोलिक महत्व और समय इसे रणनीतिक दृष्टिकोण से बेहद महत्वपूर्ण बनाता है, खासकर जब LAC पर लगातार निर्माण और सैन्य गतिविधियाँ हो रही हैं।
‘एक्सरसाइज आक्रमण’ केवल भारतीय वायुसेना की ताकत नहीं दिखाता, बल्कि यह भारत की तीनों सेनाओं के बीच बढ़ते तालमेल और थियेटर कमांड जैसी भविष्य की संरचनाओं की ओर कदम बढ़ाने का संकेत भी देता है।
