Indian Army and Assam Rifles Crack Down on Insurgent Networks in Manipur: Arms, Ammunition, and Drugs Seized in Major Operations

In a decisive week-long counter-insurgency drive, the Indian Army and Assam Rifles, in close coordination with the Manipur Police, launched a series of intelligence-based joint operations across the state. Conducted between 25 and 31 August 2025, the operations spanned the insurgency-prone districts of Jiribam, Churachandpur, Bishnupur, Kakching, Tamenglong, Kangpokpi, Imphal West, and Imphal East, resulting in the apprehension of three active insurgent cadres and the recovery of an extensive haul of arms, ammunition, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and narcotics.
According to official figures, the security forces recovered 53 weapons, seven IEDs, drugs worth ₹10 lakh, multiple radio sets, and other war-like stores. The coordinated action underscores the government’s renewed push to weaken the nexus between insurgent groups, arms smugglers, and narcotics traffickers that has long destabilised Manipur.
Major Haul in Churachandpur: Drugs and Weapons Intercepted
On 25 August, Assam Rifles scored a significant success at S Munnuam village, Churachandpur, when troops intercepted a narcotics consignment of 1,200 WY (World is Yours) tablets valued at nearly ₹10 lakh. The seizure disrupted what officials described as a key narcotics supply chain feeding both local consumption and cross-border smuggling networks.
In a parallel operation at Singtom village near Sugnu in Chandel District, combined teams of Assam Rifles, Indian Army, Manipur Police, and Kakching Commandos uncovered a major cache. The recovery included:
- One INSAS rifle with magazine
- One mortar and one mortar bomb with cover
- One single-barrel rifle and one .32 pistol
- Two country-made carbines, four pumpi (improvised projectile) guns
- Seven IEDs
- A large assortment of live rounds (INSAS, AK, SLR, 9mm, and .303 rifles)
- Tear smoke grenades and shells, protective gear, and communication equipment.
A senior officer described the seizure as “one of the largest single-day recoveries in the valley in recent months,” highlighting the depth of the insurgents’ weapons caches.
Tamenglong Arms Cache: Linking Hills to Valley Networks
Also on 25 August, Assam Rifles conducted a search in Pangmol village, Tamenglong district. The haul included 110 rounds of 7.62mm AK-47 ammunition, 16 rounds of LMG, four rounds of 5.56mm INSAS, eight fired cases of multiple calibres, two AK magazines, one radio set, and military fatigues. Officials believe the cache belonged to cadres of a hill-based group attempting to supply valley insurgents.
Cadres Apprehended: Knocking Out Insurgent Foot-Soldiers
- On 25 August, Assam Rifles, Territorial Army, and Imphal East Police apprehended an active KCP (MFL) cadre from Takhel, Imphal East.
- On 28 August, a KCP (T) cadre involved in extortion in Kakching Valley was arrested.
- On the same day, in Lamsang (Imphal West), another KCP (People’s War Group) cadre was apprehended.
- Separately, three cadres of the KCP (Politbureau Standing Committee) were arrested from Imphal West and Kakching, along with six mobile phones and two Aadhaar cards.
- On 28 August, Assam Rifles and Imphal East Police Commandos arrested an active KYKL (Oken) cadre in Bamon Leikai, Imphal East.
- On 29 August, an active PREPAK (Pro) cadre was nabbed in Moirang, Bishnupur. Preliminary questioning revealed that he had undergone basic military training in January 2024 at Seijang, underscoring that recruitment pipelines remain active.
- In a dramatic operation near the Indo-Myanmar border, Assam Rifles and Indian Army apprehended four active cadres of the PLA (People’s Liberation Army) near Border Pillar 86, Tengnoupal District.
Each apprehended cadre has been handed over to the respective local police stations for further investigation.
Firearms Galore: Kangpokpi Operations Reveal Wide Spectrum of Weaponry
On 27 August, twin operations in Kotzim and Maohing Kuki, Kangpokpi District, revealed the diversity of arms in insurgent hands. Recoveries included:
- M16 rifle (US-made), .303 rifles, bolt-action rifles, and single-barreled shotguns
- Improvised mortars, grenades, and pumpi launchers
- Carbines, pistols, and lathod launchers
- Protective gear such as bulletproof jackets and multiple Baofeng radio sets.
Officials noted the presence of foreign-origin weapons, including US-made small arms, which hint at cross-border smuggling networks through Myanmar.
Loktak Lake Search: Hidden Weapons Unearthed
Acting on specific intelligence, the Army, Bishnupur Police, and Moirang Police launched a search near Loktak Lake on 28 August. The sweep unearthed a self-loading rifle, a .303 rifle, single- and double-barrel shotguns, and a seven-kilogram IED. Security officials emphasised that such recoveries are vital in pre-empting planned attacks against civilians and security forces alike.
Extortion and Intimidation: Tackling Insurgency’s Financial Backbone
Several apprehended insurgents were directly linked to extortion rackets in Kakching Valley, Imphal West, and Bishnupur. Officials underline that these groups rely heavily on illegal taxation, intimidation, and narcotics smuggling to sustain operations. The recovery of WY tablets and makeshift shotgun cartridges reinforces the convergence of insurgency and organised crime in Manipur.
Strategic Significance: Disrupting Cross-Border Networks
The arrests near the Indo-Myanmar border in Tengnoupal are particularly significant. Intelligence sources suggest that PLA and allied outfits use cross-border sanctuaries for training, regrouping, and weapons procurement. By intercepting cadres near Border Pillar 86, security forces not only neutralised immediate threats but also sent a strong signal about India’s resolve to secure its northeastern frontier.
Official Statement and Outlook
An Army spokesperson described the operations as part of a “calibrated and intelligence-driven campaign to dismantle insurgent infrastructure and disrupt their financial, narcotics, and arms supply chains.” The spokesperson added that joint operations will continue with enhanced tempo in coming weeks.
The recoveries — ranging from sophisticated foreign-origin rifles to crude pumpi launchers, narcotics, and communication gear — reflect both the adaptability of insurgent groups and the challenges faced by security forces. However, officials insist that the latest seizures represent “serious attrition” for the groups involved.
A Message of Assurance
The string of successful operations in late August represents more than just arrests and recoveries. It is a reassurance to the people of Manipur that the security forces remain alert, proactive, and resolute. By cutting off the lifelines of insurgent outfits — arms, money, and drugs — the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, and Manipur Police are seeking not just to restore order, but also to create conditions for long-term peace in a region scarred by decades of insurgency.
For now, the people of Manipur can take heart in the fact that their protectors are firmly on the front foot.

भारतीय सेना और असम राइफल्स ने मणिपुर पुलिस के साथ मिलकर राज्यभर में उग्रवाद विरोधी एक बड़े अभियान को अंजाम दिया। 25 से 31 अगस्त 2025 तक चले इस सप्ताहभर के अभियान में जिरिबाम, चुराचांदपुर, बिष्णुपुर, काकचिंग, तामेंगलॉन्ग, कांगपोकपी, इंफाल पश्चिम और इंफाल पूर्व जिलों में इंटेलिजेंस-आधारित संयुक्त सर्च ऑपरेशन किए गए। इसमें तीन सक्रिय उग्रवादियों को गिरफ्तार किया गया और बड़ी मात्रा में हथियार, गोला-बारूद, आईईडी और ड्रग्स बरामद किए गए।
आधिकारिक आंकड़ों के अनुसार, सुरक्षा बलों ने 53 हथियार, सात आईईडी, 10 लाख रुपये मूल्य के ड्रग्स, कई रेडियो सेट और अन्य युद्ध सामग्री बरामद की। यह कार्रवाई उग्रवादी संगठनों, हथियार तस्करों और ड्रग्स नेटवर्क की कड़ी को कमजोर करने की दिशा में सरकार की रणनीतिक पहल को दर्शाती है।
चुराचांदपुर में बड़ी सफलता: ड्रग्स और हथियार जब्त
25 अगस्त को असम राइफल्स ने चुराचांदपुर जिले के एस. मुननुआम गांव में 1,200 WY (World is Yours) टैबलेट बरामद की, जिनकी कीमत करीब ₹10 लाख है। इसे स्थानीय उपभोग और सीमा पार तस्करी नेटवर्क को झटका माना जा रहा है।
सुगनु (चांदेल जिला) के पास सिंगटॉम गांव में संयुक्त ऑपरेशन में भारी मात्रा में हथियार और गोला-बारूद मिला। बरामदगी में शामिल थे:
- एक INSAS राइफल और मैगजीन
- एक मोर्टार और बम
- एक .32 पिस्तौल, एक सिंगल बैरल राइफल
- दो देसी कार्बाइन और चार पंपी गन
- सात आईईडी
- INSAS, AK, SLR, 9mm और .303 के जिंदा कारतूस
- टियर गैस ग्रेनेड, शेल और संचार उपकरण
अधिकारियों ने इसे हाल के महीनों में घाटी क्षेत्र की सबसे बड़ी बरामदगी बताया।
तामेंगलॉन्ग: हथियारों का बड़ा जखीरा
उसी दिन असम राइफल्स ने तामेंगलॉन्ग जिले के पांगमोल गांव में सर्च ऑपरेशन कर 110 राउंड AK-47 कारतूस, 16 LMG राउंड, 4 INSAS राउंड, 8 खाली खोखे, 2 AK मैगजीन, एक रेडियो सेट और वर्दी बरामद की। माना जा रहा है कि यह हथियार घाटी के उग्रवादियों तक पहुँचाने की योजना थी।
उग्रवादी गिरफ्तार: कैडर नेटवर्क को ध्वस्त करने की कोशिश
25 से 29 अगस्त के बीच सुरक्षा बलों ने कई सक्रिय कैडरों को पकड़ा, जिनमें KCP (MFL), KCP (T), KCP (PWG), KYKL (Oken), PREPAK (Pro) और PLA संगठन से जुड़े उग्रवादी शामिल थे। इनमें से कई रंगदारी वसूली और ड्रग्स नेटवर्क में सक्रिय थे।
तेंगनौपाल जिले में भारत-म्यांमार सीमा के पास PLA के चार सक्रिय कैडरों की गिरफ्तारी विशेष रूप से महत्वपूर्ण मानी जा रही है।
कांगपोकपी में विदेशी हथियार बरामद
27 अगस्त को कांगपोकपी जिले में तलाशी के दौरान अमेरिकी निर्मित M16 राइफल, .303 राइफलें, ग्रेनेड, पंपी लॉन्चर, कार्बाइन, लाठोड लॉन्चर और बुलेटप्रूफ जैकेट मिले। अधिकारियों ने कहा कि विदेशी हथियारों की मौजूदगी म्यांमार सीमा से तस्करी के नेटवर्क की ओर इशारा करती है।
लोकटक झील: छिपाए गए हथियार मिले
28 अगस्त को लोकटक झील क्षेत्र में सर्च ऑपरेशन में SLR, .303 राइफलें, शॉटगन और सात किलो वजनी आईईडी बरामद हुआ। सुरक्षा बलों का कहना है कि ये हथियार संभावित हमलों के लिए छिपाए गए थे।
रणनीतिक महत्व
सुरक्षा बलों का मानना है कि इस ऑपरेशन से उग्रवादी संगठनों की वित्तीय रीढ़ — रंगदारी, हथियार और ड्रग्स — पर बड़ा असर पड़ा है। सेना के प्रवक्ता ने कहा कि यह “सटीक और इंटेलिजेंस-आधारित अभियान” है, जो आगे और तेज किया जाएगा।
