Indian Coast Guard Cracks Down on Illegal Fishing: Two Bangladeshi Boats Apprehended in Indian EEZ in Northern Bay of Bengal
Vigilant Maritime Surveillance in the Northern Bay of Bengal
In a strong assertion of India’s maritime sovereignty and commitment to protecting its marine resources, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) apprehended two Bangladeshi fishing boats (BFBs) engaged in illegal fishing within India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Northern Bay of Bengal. The operation was carried out on 16 December 2025 by ICG Ship Anmol, which was undertaking routine surveillance and maritime patrol duties in the region.
The successful interception highlights the Indian Coast Guard’s persistent vigilance and operational readiness in safeguarding India’s vast maritime zones from transnational maritime crimes, including illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
Violation of Indian Maritime Laws Detected at Sea
The apprehension was made under the provisions of the Maritime Zones of India (MZI) (Regulation of Fishing by Foreign Vessels) Act, 1981, which strictly prohibits foreign fishing vessels from undertaking fishing activities within India’s EEZ without authorisation.
During the boarding and inspection process, ICG personnel found active fishing gear onboard both boats, along with approximately 500 kilograms of freshly caught fish, leaving little doubt that the vessels were engaged in active fishing operations inside Indian waters. A total of 35 crew members were found onboard the two Bangladeshi boats at the time of interception.
Swift Custody and Legal Handover
Following standard operational procedures, the apprehended fishing boats and their crew were taken into custody by the Indian Coast Guard and escorted to the Indian coast. On 17 December 2025, both boats along with the 35 crew members were formally handed over to the Marine Police at Frazerganj for further legal proceedings.
The case will now be processed in accordance with applicable Indian laws, ensuring due legal process while upholding India’s maritime jurisdiction and legal framework governing fishing activities in its waters.
Protecting Indian Fishermen and Marine Resources
Illegal fishing by foreign vessels poses a serious threat to India’s marine ecosystem, coastal livelihoods, and food security. Such activities not only deplete fish stocks but also endanger the safety of Indian fishermen, who often face increased competition and risks due to unauthorised foreign fishing operations.
By intercepting and apprehending these vessels, the Indian Coast Guard plays a crucial role in ensuring a level playing field for Indian fishermen, protecting their livelihoods, and preserving marine biodiversity in the Bay of Bengal.
Consistent Enforcement and Rising Apprehensions
The latest operation forms part of a broader and sustained enforcement effort by the Indian Coast Guard. Over the last three months, the ICG has apprehended eight Bangladeshi fishing boats, involving a total of 170 crew members, for similar violations of India’s EEZ.
This trend underlines both the persistent challenge of cross-border illegal fishing and the increasing effectiveness of India’s maritime surveillance and enforcement mechanisms.

The Indian Coast Guard continues to maintain a strong and visible presence across India’s maritime zones, particularly in sensitive and resource-rich regions such as the Bay of Bengal. Through continuous patrols, aerial surveillance, and intelligence-driven operations, the ICG ensures strict enforcement of maritime laws while promoting the responsible and lawful use of the seas.
Modern patrol vessels like ICG Ship Anmol, equipped with advanced navigation and surveillance systems, enable rapid detection and interception of maritime violations even in challenging sea conditions.

This successful apprehension reaffirms the Indian Coast Guard’s role as a key maritime law enforcement agency, entrusted with upholding India’s sovereignty, protecting national maritime interests, and ensuring adherence to international and domestic maritime regulations.

उत्तरी बंगाल की खाड़ी में भारतीय तटरक्षक बल की बड़ी कार्रवाई: अवैध मछली पकड़ते दो बांग्लादेशी नौकाएँ जब्त, 35 मछुआरे हिरासत में

भारत की समुद्री सीमाओं की सख़्त निगरानी और राष्ट्रीय समुद्री हितों की सुरक्षा के प्रति अपनी अटूट प्रतिबद्धता को दोहराते हुए भारतीय तटरक्षक बल (Indian Coast Guard – ICG) ने उत्तरी बंगाल की खाड़ी में एक बड़ी कार्रवाई को अंजाम दिया है। नियमित समुद्री निगरानी अभियान के दौरान आईसीजी पोत ‘अनमोल’ ने 16 दिसंबर 2025 को भारत के विशिष्ट आर्थिक क्षेत्र (EEZ) के भीतर अवैध रूप से मछली पकड़ रही दो बांग्लादेशी मछली पकड़ने वाली नौकाओं को पकड़ा।
इस कार्रवाई में कुल 35 बांग्लादेशी क्रू सदस्य भारतीय तटरक्षक बल की हिरासत में लिए गए, जिससे समुद्री कानूनों के उल्लंघन पर भारत की ‘ज़ीरो टॉलरेंस’ नीति एक बार फिर स्पष्ट हुई।
भारतीय समुद्री कानूनों का स्पष्ट उल्लंघन
जांच के दौरान यह पाया गया कि दोनों विदेशी नौकाएँ Maritime Zones of India (Regulation of Fishing by Foreign Vessels) Act, 1981 का सीधा उल्लंघन कर रही थीं, जो किसी भी विदेशी पोत को भारत के EEZ में बिना अनुमति मछली पकड़ने से सख्ती से रोकता है।
तलाशी के समय नौकाओं पर सक्रिय मछली पकड़ने के जाल और उपकरण पाए गए, साथ ही लगभग 500 किलोग्राम मछली का ताज़ा जखीरा भी बरामद किया गया। इन तथ्यों से यह स्पष्ट हो गया कि भारतीय समुद्री सीमा के भीतर सक्रिय रूप से अवैध मछली पकड़ने का कार्य चल रहा था।
कानूनी प्रक्रिया के तहत मरीन पुलिस को सौंपा गया मामला
अंतरराष्ट्रीय और राष्ट्रीय समुद्री प्रोटोकॉल का पालन करते हुए भारतीय तटरक्षक बल ने पकड़ी गई दोनों नौकाओं और सभी 35 क्रू सदस्यों को सुरक्षित रूप से भारतीय तट तक पहुँचाया। 17 दिसंबर 2025 को इन्हें फ्रेज़रगंज मरीन पुलिस के हवाले कर दिया गया, जहाँ अब मामले की कानूनी कार्यवाही भारतीय कानूनों के अनुसार की जाएगी।
भारतीय मछुआरों की सुरक्षा और समुद्री संसाधनों का संरक्षण
विदेशी नौकाओं द्वारा की जाने वाली अवैध मछली पकड़ गतिविधियाँ भारत के समुद्री जैव संसाधनों, तटीय अर्थव्यवस्था और मछुआरों की आजीविका के लिए गंभीर खतरा पैदा करती हैं। इससे न केवल मछली संसाधनों का अत्यधिक दोहन होता है, बल्कि भारतीय मछुआरों की समुद्र में सुरक्षा भी प्रभावित होती है।
भारतीय तटरक्षक बल की इस कार्रवाई से यह संदेश साफ़ गया है कि भारत अपने मछुआरों के हितों की रक्षा, समुद्री पारिस्थितिकी के संरक्षण और खाद्य सुरक्षा सुनिश्चित करने के लिए पूरी तरह सतर्क और सक्षम है।
लगातार कार्रवाई, बढ़ता प्रवर्तन दबाव
यह कार्रवाई कोई अकेली घटना नहीं है। पिछले तीन महीनों में भारतीय तटरक्षक बल ने इसी तरह के उल्लंघनों में आठ बांग्लादेशी मछली पकड़ने वाली नौकाओं को पकड़ा है, जिनमें कुल 170 क्रू सदस्यों को हिरासत में लिया गया।
ये आंकड़े यह दर्शाते हैं कि जहां एक ओर अवैध मछली पकड़ने की चुनौती बनी हुई है, वहीं दूसरी ओर भारतीय तटरक्षक बल की निगरानी, खुफिया तंत्र और त्वरित कार्रवाई क्षमता लगातार मजबूत हो रही है।
बंगाल की खाड़ी में मजबूत भारतीय समुद्री उपस्थिति
भारतीय तटरक्षक बल देश के समुद्री क्षेत्रों में सशक्त और निरंतर उपस्थिति बनाए हुए है। अत्याधुनिक गश्ती पोत, तटीय निगरानी रडार प्रणाली और हवाई निगरानी के माध्यम से ICG यह सुनिश्चित कर रहा है कि भारत के EEZ में किसी भी प्रकार की अवैध गतिविधि को समय रहते रोका जा सके।
आईसीजी पोत ‘अनमोल’ जैसे आधुनिक जहाज कठिन समुद्री परिस्थितियों में भी त्वरित प्रतिक्रिया और प्रभावी प्रवर्तन की क्षमता रखते हैं।
समुद्री संप्रभुता और नियम-आधारित व्यवस्था की रक्षा
दो बांग्लादेशी नौकाओं की यह गिरफ्तारी भारतीय तटरक्षक बल की उस भूमिका को रेखांकित करती है, जिसमें वह भारत की समुद्री संप्रभुता, कानून के शासन और अंतरराष्ट्रीय समुद्री मानकों की रक्षा करता है।
जैसे-जैसे बंगाल की खाड़ी और हिंद महासागर क्षेत्र में समुद्री चुनौतियाँ बढ़ रही हैं, भारतीय तटरक्षक बल अवैध गतिविधियों पर नकेल कसने, समुद्री शासन को मजबूत करने और भारत के समुद्री हितों की रक्षा के लिए पूरी मजबूती से तैनात है।
