New Delhi/Kochi, 25 May 2025: In a dramatic maritime emergency that unfolded off the Kerala coast, the Liberian-flagged container ship MSC ELSA 3 (IMO No. 9123221) sank in the early hours of Saturday morning, prompting a massive multi-agency Search and Rescue (SAR) and Pollution Response operation. The vessel, which was en route from Vizhinjam Port near Thiruvananthapuram to Kochi, developed a dangerous 26-degree list to starboard side due to flooding and eventually capsized.
All 24 crew members onboard were rescued in a well-coordinated effort by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), Indian Navy, and merchant vessels diverted for the operation. Among the rescued were nationals from Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, and the Philippines.
The incident is being seen as a critical test of India’s maritime emergency response capabilities, especially concerning the prevention of environmental damage due to potential oil or hazardous chemical spills. The sunken vessel had onboard over 450 metric tonnes of fuel and 13 containers of hazardous material, including calcium carbide.
Emergency Begins on 24 May: Ship Adrift with Steep List
At approximately 1325 hrs on 24 May 2025, the Indian Coast Guard received a distress alert from the MSC ELSA 3, located around 38 nautical miles west of Kochi. The vessel had developed a perilous list of 26 degrees to starboard side, indicating serious flooding or structural imbalance. With communication from the ship lost, the vessel owner sought immediate assistance to safeguard the lives of the 24-member crew.
ICG’s Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC) under the Kochi District Headquarters immediately launched a coordinated response. An ICG Dornier aircraft was deployed for aerial surveillance, which located the drifting vessel and two liferafts already in the water with five and four survivors respectively. The aircraft also observed floating containers near the site, signaling possible cargo loss or structural damage.
Swift Multilateral Rescue Operation
ICG ships already on patrol were diverted to the location while MRSC also redirected two nearby merchant vessels—MV Han Yi and MSC Silver 2—in accordance with international SAR protocols. The ICG aircraft air-dropped additional liferafts to aid crew evacuation. Twelve more seafarers abandoned the listing vessel using ICG-deployed life-saving equipment and were rescued by ICG Ship Arnvesh.
MV Han Yi rescued nine individuals from the water. Meanwhile, INS Sujata, which joined the rescue effort later that evening, played a crucial role in recovering the last remaining three crew members, including the Captain, Chief Engineer, and Second Engineer, who had stayed behind for potential salvage operations.
Sinking and Environmental Threat
At around 0750 hrs on 25 May 2025, MSC ELSA 3 listed rapidly and sank at coordinates 09°18.76’N and 076°08.12’E. The last three crew members had to abandon ship and were rescued by INS Sujata.
According to preliminary reports, the vessel carried 640 containers, 13 of which contained hazardous cargo, including 12 containers of calcium carbide—a substance that can produce flammable acetylene gas upon contact with water. Moreover, the ship had 84.44 metric tonnes of diesel and 367.1 metric tonnes of furnace oil in its tanks, posing a significant pollution risk.
Indian Coast Guard on War Footing to Contain Oil Spill
Given the proximity of the incident to the ecologically sensitive Kerala coast, which harbors rich marine biodiversity and is a major tourist destination, the Indian Coast Guard has activated its full-scale pollution response machinery.
ICG Ship Saksham, equipped with pollution containment gear, has been deployed at the site. Aerial surveillance using Dornier aircraft equipped with advanced oil spill mapping sensors is ongoing. As of now, no visible oil slick has been reported, but authorities remain on high alert.
ICG is also in constant coordination with Kerala’s state administration and maritime stakeholders for a joint response to any developing environmental fallout.
A Timely Reminder of Maritime Vigilance and Preparedness
This incident marks a crucial reminder of the unpredictability of sea-based commerce and the need for constant vigilance, especially in a region as strategically and ecologically significant as India’s southwest coast. The Indian Coast Guard’s rapid deployment, inter-agency synergy, and the use of both military and civilian maritime assets have been widely lauded.
The Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Environment, and Pollution Control Board are expected to conduct further inquiries into the sinking, with specific focus on the cause of listing, condition of the vessel, and adherence to hazardous material protocols.
The episode also brings attention to the international implications of maritime safety, especially in busy sea lanes off India’s peninsular coast, and reiterates the importance of having a ready and resourceful response to both humanitarian and ecological crises at sea.

नई दिल्ली/कोच्चि, 25 मई 2025: केरल तट से लगभग 38 समुद्री मील दूर आज सुबह एक बड़ा समुद्री हादसा हुआ जब लाइबेरियन ध्वज वाले कंटेनर जहाज MSC ELSA 3 (IMO No. 9123221) में पानी भरने से जहाज तेजी से एक ओर झुक गया और अंततः डूब गया। हादसे के समय जहाज कोच्चि बंदरगाह की ओर जा रहा था।
भारतीय तटरक्षक बल (ICG), भारतीय नौसेना और दो व्यापारी जहाजों द्वारा चलाए गए रेस्क्यू ऑपरेशन में सभी 24 क्रू सदस्यों को सकुशल बचा लिया गया। क्रू में रूस, यूक्रेन, जॉर्जिया और फिलीपींस के नागरिक शामिल थे।
जहाज पर मौजूद 640 कंटेनरों में से 13 कंटेनरों में खतरनाक रसायन थे, जिनमें से 12 में कैल्शियम कार्बाइड था। इसके अलावा, जहाज में 84.44 मीट्रिक टन डीजल और 367.1 मीट्रिक टन फर्नेस ऑयल भरा हुआ था, जो पर्यावरण के लिए बड़ा खतरा बन सकता है।
24 मई को शुरू हुआ संकट: जहाज एक ओर 26 डिग्री झुका
24 मई दोपहर लगभग 13:25 बजे, भारतीय तटरक्षक बल को MSC ELSA 3 से आपातकालीन संदेश मिला। जहाज तेज़ी से स्टारबोर्ड (दाहिनी) दिशा में 26 डिग्री झुक चुका था और पलटने की कगार पर था। जहाज मालिकों से संपर्क नहीं हो पा रहा था और उन्होंने ICG से 24 क्रू सदस्यों की सुरक्षा सुनिश्चित करने के लिए मदद मांगी।
ICG के कोच्चि स्थित मरीन रेस्क्यू सब-सेंटर ने तुरंत एक डोर्नियर विमान को भेजा जिसने जहाज की स्थिति देखी और दो लाइफ राफ्ट में क्रमशः 5 और 4 लोग पाए।
तेजी से हुआ बहुपक्षीय रेस्क्यू ऑपरेशन
ICG के गश्ती पोत तुरंत घटनास्थल की ओर मोड़े गए। दो नज़दीकी व्यापारी जहाज—MV Han Yi और MSC Silver 2—को भी सहायता के लिए भेजा गया। डोर्नियर विमान ने अतिरिक्त लाइफ राफ्ट एयरड्रॉप किए, जिससे 12 और क्रू सदस्य सुरक्षित निकाले गए। इन्हें ICG Ship Arnvesh ने बचाया।
MV Han Yi ने दो लाइफ राफ्ट से 9 सदस्यों को रेस्क्यू किया। शाम तक INS Sujata भी अभियान में शामिल हो गई और जहाज के कैप्टन, चीफ इंजीनियर और सेकंड इंजीनियर को बचाया जो जहाज पर डटे हुए थे।
डूबा जहाज, पर्यावरण को खतरा
25 मई सुबह लगभग 07:50 बजे जहाज ने तेजी से झुकना शुरू किया और आखिरकार समंदर में समा गया। आखिरी बचे तीन क्रू सदस्य भी समय रहते जहाज से निकल पाए और INS Sujata ने उन्हें सुरक्षित बचा लिया।
जहाज पर मौजूद खतरनाक रसायनों और ईंधन के कारण पर्यावरणीय संकट की आशंका बढ़ गई है। तटरक्षक बल ने ICG Ship Saksham को घटनास्थल पर तैनात किया है, जो तेल रिसाव को रोकने वाले उपकरणों से सुसज्जित है।
तटरक्षक बल का चौकस और सक्षम जवाब
ICG की विशेष डोर्नियर विमान तेल रिसाव की निगरानी कर रही हैं। अभी तक किसी तरह के रिसाव की पुष्टि नहीं हुई है। ICG राज्य प्रशासन के साथ मिलकर पर्यावरणीय खतरे से निपटने की तैयारी कर रहा है।
घटना ने भारत के समुद्री सुरक्षा ढांचे और पर्यावरणीय आपात स्थितियों में उसकी तत्परता की परीक्षा ली है—जिसमें ICG ने कुशल और साहसिक प्रदर्शन किया है।
जांच और भविष्य की तैयारी
जहाज के झुकने के कारणों, जहाज की तकनीकी स्थिति और खतरनाक सामानों के प्रबंधन को लेकर DG Shipping और पर्यावरण मंत्रालय जल्द ही विस्तृत जांच शुरू करेंगे।
भारत के पश्चिमी समुद्री तट के व्यस्त समुद्री मार्गों पर यह घटना एक बड़ा सबक है—जहां मानवीय सुरक्षा के साथ-साथ पर्यावरणीय सतर्कता और तेजी से प्रतिक्रिया अनिवार्य है।
