Indian Defence Service of Engineers Celebrates 76th Raising Day at Delhi Cantt
Defence Secretary Commends Role of IDSE Officers in Nation-Building, Calls for Embracing New Technologies
The Indian Defence Service of Engineers (IDSE), one of the nation’s most significant yet often unsung pillars of defence preparedness, marked its 76th Raising Day with pride, purpose, and a forward-looking vision at the Manekshaw Centre in Delhi Cantonment. The event, held on September 17, 2025, witnessed the presence of senior civil and military dignitaries, with Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh gracing the occasion as the Chief Guest.
In his keynote address, the Defence Secretary lauded the contribution of IDSE officers in strengthening India’s defence infrastructure and underscored the critical role the cadre plays in ensuring the nation’s armed forces remain supported by world-class facilities. “The IDSE has been instrumental in building and maintaining the backbone of our military’s infrastructure – from barracks to airfields, from jetties to laboratories. As India’s security environment evolves, the role of engineers in defence becomes even more vital. We must embrace innovation and cutting-edge technology to meet the demands of modern warfare,” he said.
IDSE: The Silent Backbone of Defence Infrastructure
Established on September 17, 1949, the Indian Defence Service of Engineers was created to provide professional engineering expertise for the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces. Over the past seven decades, the cadre has grown into an organised Group ‘A’ service, with officers posted across India’s military stations, coastal bases, forward areas, and sensitive installations.
The responsibilities of IDSE officers extend far beyond traditional construction. They are tasked with designing, executing, and maintaining a wide spectrum of infrastructure vital to the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This includes married accommodations, technical and administrative complexes, hangars for fighter aircraft, naval docks and jetties, defence hospitals, test facilities, and highly specialised structures that ensure operational readiness in peace and war.
From the high-altitude posts of Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh to the naval establishments along India’s 7,500-km coastline, IDSE officers are deployed to deliver engineering solutions under some of the most challenging conditions. Their contributions often remain in the background, yet their impact directly influences combat readiness and national defence.
A Day of Recognition and Cultural Celebration
The 76th Raising Day celebration was not just about introspection but also about honouring the spirit of service. The formal address by the Defence Secretary was followed by a vibrant cultural programme, featuring dance performances organised by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR). Artists showcased India’s rich cultural heritage through classical and folk traditions, adding colour and pride to the solemn occasion.
The event saw the participation of senior officials from the Ministry of Defence, senior Army Headquarters officers, and retired stalwarts of the IDSE cadre, who shared memories of the service’s growth over the decades. For young officers and their families, the day was both a learning experience and a moment of collective pride.
Building for the Future: Challenges and Opportunities
As the Defence Secretary highlighted in his address, India’s security scenario is undergoing rapid transformation. The challenges of border infrastructure, rapid mobilisation, cyber-security linked engineering systems, and sustainable green defence facilities are becoming increasingly relevant.
Emerging technologies such as smart construction systems, artificial intelligence-based project monitoring, modular structures, and energy-efficient solutions are redefining the way defence infrastructure will be designed and maintained in the years ahead. The IDSE, with its large cadre of skilled engineers, is expected to lead this transformation.
“Just as the nature of warfare has changed, so too must the nature of infrastructure that supports it,” remarked a senior official at the event. “From hardened shelters for aircraft against missile threats to underground command centres resistant to cyber-electromagnetic disruptions, the IDSE’s future projects must be as innovative as they are robust.”
Legacy of Seven Decades
Looking back, the establishment of the IDSE in 1949 was a strategic decision that allowed India to create an in-house cadre of engineering professionals dedicated to defence. Over the decades, these officers have been responsible for developing major cantonments, building facilities during conflicts, and adapting designs to suit India’s diverse terrain and climate.
During wars and crises, IDSE officers have stood shoulder to shoulder with the Armed Forces, ensuring infrastructure is battle-ready at short notice. Their contributions during the 1962 India-China war, the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak conflicts, and the 1999 Kargil War remain etched in the institutional memory of the Armed Forces.
Today, the service continues to evolve with new priorities: developing border roads and bunkers in Ladakh, advanced airstrips in Arunachal Pradesh, and coastal defence installations in peninsular India.
The Road Ahead
As the IDSE enters its 77th year, its officers find themselves at the cusp of both challenge and opportunity. With the government’s push towards indigenisation, self-reliance, and sustainable infrastructure, the cadre is likely to play a more visible role in future defence projects.
The Raising Day celebration served not only as a reminder of past achievements but also as a call to action for the future. By combining tradition with technology, and engineering expertise with strategic foresight, the IDSE aims to remain the nation’s silent yet steadfast force behind the scenes of national security.
The 76th Raising Day, therefore, was more than a ceremonial gathering—it was a reaffirmation of commitment. Commitment to India’s armed forces, to the Ministry of Defence, and above all, to the nation itself.

भारतीय रक्षा अभियंता सेवा (IDSE), जो रक्षा मंत्रालय (MoD) के अधीन एक संगठित ग्रुप ‘ए’ कैडर है, ने 17 सितम्बर 2025 को दिल्ली कैंट स्थित मानेकशॉ सेंटर में अपना 76वां स्थापना दिवस बड़े उत्साह और गौरव के साथ मनाया। इस अवसर पर रक्षा सचिव श्री राजेश कुमार सिंह मुख्य अतिथि के रूप में मौजूद रहे।
अपने संबोधन में रक्षा सचिव ने आईडीएसई अधिकारियों की उस महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका की सराहना की, जिसके माध्यम से वे राष्ट्रीय रक्षा तैयारियों को विश्वस्तरीय इंफ्रास्ट्रक्चर के जरिये मजबूत बना रहे हैं। उन्होंने कहा कि समय के साथ बदलते सुरक्षा परिदृश्य और उभरती चुनौतियों को ध्यान में रखते हुए आईडीएसई अधिकारियों को तकनीकी नवाचार को अपनाना चाहिए और भविष्य की जरूरतों के लिए सदैव तैयार रहना चाहिए। उन्होंने इस बात पर भी जोर दिया कि देश की रक्षा शक्ति केवल हथियारों और सैनिकों से ही नहीं, बल्कि मजबूत और आधुनिक ढांचे से भी सुदृढ़ होती है।
रक्षा सचिव के भाषण के बाद भारतीय सांस्कृतिक संबंध परिषद (ICCR) के कलाकारों ने सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रम और नृत्य प्रस्तुतियों से समारोह को और भी जीवंत बना दिया। इस अवसर पर रक्षा मंत्रालय और सेना मुख्यालय के वरिष्ठ सैन्य और असैन्य अधिकारी बड़ी संख्या में मौजूद रहे।
ऐतिहासिक पृष्ठभूमि
भारतीय रक्षा अभियंता सेवा (IDSE) की नींव 17 सितम्बर 1949 को रखी गई थी। इस दिन ने भारतीय रक्षा इंजीनियरिंग के इतिहास में एक नया अध्याय जोड़ा था। तब से लेकर अब तक यह संगठन लगातार तीनों सेनाओं—थलसेना, नौसेना और वायुसेना—के साथ-साथ कोस्ट गार्ड और डीआरडीओ के लिए आधारभूत संरचनाओं का निर्माण और रखरखाव करता आ रहा है।
जिम्मेदारियां और योगदान
आईडीएसई के अधिकारी देशभर के सैन्य स्टेशनों पर तैनात रहते हैं। उनकी जिम्मेदारियों में सैनिकों के लिए आवासीय परिसर (Married Accommodation), तकनीकी और प्रशासनिक भवनों का निर्माण, एयरफील्ड और हैंगर तैयार करना, नौसेना जेट्टी का विकास, अस्पतालों का निर्माण और रक्षा अनुसंधान संगठनों के लिए विशेष सुविधाएं उपलब्ध कराना शामिल है। यह सेवा आधुनिक युग की जरूरतों के अनुसार रक्षा अवसंरचना को निरंतर उन्नत कर रही है।
आईडीएसई का काम केवल ईंट-पत्थरों का ढांचा खड़ा करना भर नहीं है, बल्कि यह भारत की सामरिक क्षमता और सुरक्षा तंत्र को मजबूत बनाने की दिशा में सबसे महत्वपूर्ण कड़ी है। चाहे ऊंचाई वाले सीमावर्ती इलाकों में सैनिकों के लिए आश्रय गृह बनाना हो या समुद्री ठिकानों पर जटिल संरचनाएं खड़ी करनी हों, आईडीएसई हर परिस्थिति में भारतीय सेनाओं की रीढ़ बनकर खड़ा है।
बदलते दौर में नई जिम्मेदारियां
आज जब भारत अनेक मोर्चों पर सुरक्षा चुनौतियों का सामना कर रहा है, आईडीएसई की भूमिका और भी बढ़ गई है। रक्षा सचिव ने अपने भाषण में कहा कि आर्टिफिशियल इंटेलिजेंस, ऑटोमेशन, हरित ऊर्जा और स्मार्ट बिल्डिंग तकनीकों जैसी नई अवधारणाओं को जल्द से जल्द अपनाना होगा। उन्होंने आईडीएसई अधिकारियों को प्रेरित किया कि वे आने वाले वर्षों में भारत को वैश्विक मानकों का रक्षा इंफ्रास्ट्रक्चर उपलब्ध कराएं।
उत्सव का महत्व
76वें स्थापना दिवस का यह समारोह केवल एक उत्सव ही नहीं, बल्कि उस संकल्प की पुनः पुष्टि भी है जिसके तहत आईडीएसई भारत की रक्षा शक्तियों को और मजबूत बनाने के लिए निरंतर काम कर रहा है। इस मौके पर अधिकारियों ने बीते दशकों में अपनी उपलब्धियों को याद किया और आने वाले समय में नई ऊंचाइयों को छूने का संकल्प लिया।
