In a major step towards augmenting India’s coastal and sub-surface defence capabilities, the Indian Navy is set to commission ‘Arnala’, the first Anti-Submarine Warfare – Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), on 18th June 2025 at the Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam. The ceremonial commissioning will be presided over by the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Anil Chauhan, and hosted by Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command.
Aatmanirbhar Milestone in Shipbuilding
Arnala is the first of sixteen vessels of the ASW-SWC class designed and built under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. It is being hailed as a major leap in indigenous naval shipbuilding and underwater warfare capability. The vessel has been developed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, in collaboration with L&T Shipbuilding, under a robust Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The delivery of Arnala to the Indian Navy took place on 8 May 2025.
Indigenous Backbone, Maritime Muscle
With over 80% indigenous content, Arnala integrates state-of-the-art systems from premier Indian defence firms including BEL, L&T, Mahindra Defence, and MEIL, along with more than 55 MSMEs, thus amplifying local industrial growth and defence manufacturing under ‘Make in India’. The vessel is also a reflection of India’s long-term maritime vision to become self-reliant while remaining combat-ready across all domains of naval warfare.
Technical Might & Tactical Flexibility
Measuring 77 meters in length with a displacement of 1490 tonnes, Arnala is the largest Indian warship to be propelled by a diesel engine-waterjet combination, offering high-speed shallow water manoeuvrability and stealth. It is equipped to conduct a wide spectrum of Anti-Submarine Warfare operations in littoral waters, including subsurface surveillance, search & rescue, and low-intensity maritime conflict roles.
This ship is specifically designed to operate effectively in shallow coastal zones and archipelagic territories—high-risk areas often targeted by hostile submarines, mines, and underwater drones. Its sonar systems, integrated combat suite, and tactical resilience make it a pivotal asset in the Indian Navy’s growing blue-water ambitions.
Historic Name, Modern Might
Named after the Arnala Fort located near Vasai in Maharashtra, the ship draws inspiration from the strategic legacy of the Maratha naval defence under Chimaji Appa in 1737. Much like the fort’s resilient stance along the Konkan coastline, INS Arnala will serve as an unyielding guardian of India’s territorial waters.
Crest, Motto & Maritime Ethos
The ship’s crest features a stylised Auger Shell, symbolising sharpness, protection, and naval strength. It echoes the ship’s precise ASW capabilities and resilience against evolving underwater threats. The ship’s motto, “अर्णवे शौर्यम्” (Arnave Shauryam), meaning “Valour in the Ocean,” embodies the spirit of steadfastness, sacrifice, and duty of its crew.
The ship’s induction reinforces India’s resolve to secure its Strategic Littoral Zones, including the Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea, and the Andaman Sea, where asymmetric underwater threats are increasing from hostile nations and non-state actors.
Symbol of India’s Maritime Future
With global maritime dynamics rapidly shifting and the Indo-Pacific emerging as a theatre of contestation, the commissioning of Arnala signifies India’s renewed focus on layered maritime security, technological self-reliance, and operational readiness to deter threats well before they reach India’s shores.
As India steadily strengthens its naval might under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh, Arnala’s arrival signals a new era in Indian maritime operations, merging historical pride with futuristic defence capabilities.
भारतीय नौसेना को मिलेगा ‘अर्नाला’ — दुश्मन पनडुब्बियों के खिलाफ तटीय सुरक्षा का नया प्रहरी

भारतीय नौसेना 18 जून 2025 को एक महत्वपूर्ण सैन्य उपलब्धि हासिल करने जा रही है, जब वह ‘अर्नाला’ नामक पहले एंटी-सबमरीन वॉरफेयर – शैलो वाटर क्राफ्ट (ASW-SWC) को नौसेना के बेड़े में शामिल करेगी। विशाखापट्टनम के नेवल डॉकयार्ड में आयोजित इस समारोह की अध्यक्षता चीफ ऑफ डिफेंस स्टाफ, जनरल अनिल चौहान करेंगे, और इसकी मेज़बानी पूर्वी नौसेना कमान के प्रमुख वाइस एडमिरल राजेश पेंढारकर करेंगे।
आत्मनिर्भर भारत की मिसाल
यह जहाज ‘आत्मनिर्भर भारत’ अभियान के तहत गार्डन रीच शिपबिल्डर्स एंड इंजीनियर्स (GRSE), कोलकाता द्वारा डिजाइन और निर्माण किया गया है। इसका निर्माण एलएंडटी शिपबिल्डिंग के साथ साझेदारी में हुआ। यह 16 ऐसे जहाजों की श्रृंखला का पहला पोत है। अर्नाला को नौसेना को 8 मई 2025 को सौंपा गया था।
स्वदेशी तकनीक से बनी समुद्री शक्ति
इस जहाज में 80% से अधिक स्वदेशी तकनीक का इस्तेमाल हुआ है और यह भारत इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स लिमिटेड (BEL), एलएंडटी, महिंद्रा डिफेंस, MEIL सहित 55 से अधिक सूक्ष्म, लघु एवं मध्यम उद्यमों (MSMEs) के सहयोग से बना है। इससे देश में रक्षा उत्पादन, तकनीकी आत्मनिर्भरता और रोजगार सृजन को बल मिला है।
तकनीकी क्षमता और सामरिक चपलता
77 मीटर लंबा और 1490 टन वजन वाला अर्नाला, डीजल इंजन और वॉटरजेट कॉम्बिनेशन से चलने वाला भारत का सबसे बड़ा युद्धपोत है। यह तटीय इलाकों में पनडुब्बी रोधी युद्ध, निगरानी, खोज और बचाव अभियान तथा कम तीव्रता वाले समुद्री अभियानों में विशेषज्ञता रखता है।
यह खासतौर पर भारत की तटीय सीमा, आइलैंड टेरिटरी और उथले जल क्षेत्रों में शत्रु की पनडुब्बियों, माइंस और ड्रोन जैसी असममित समुद्री चुनौतियों से निपटने के लिए डिजाइन किया गया है।
ऐतिहासिक विरासत से प्रेरित
‘अर्नाला’ का नाम महाराष्ट्र के वसई के पास स्थित अर्नाला किला से लिया गया है, जिसे 1737 में मराठा नेता चिमाजी आप्पा ने बनवाया था। जैसे वह किला समुद्री आक्रमणों से उत्तर भारत की रक्षा करता था, वैसे ही यह युद्धपोत समुद्री सीमाओं की सुरक्षा करेगा।
शौर्य का प्रतीक ‘क्रेस्ट’ और ‘मोटो’
जहाज का क्रेस्ट एक ऑगर शेल (Auger Shell) को दर्शाता है, जो शक्ति, सुरक्षा और सतर्कता का प्रतीक है। इसका मोटो “अर्णवे शौर्यम्” यानी “सागर में शौर्य” जहाज की वीरता और समुद्री क्षेत्र में उसकी निर्णायक भूमिका को दर्शाता है।
भारत के समुद्री वर्चस्व की दिशा में कदम
जैसे-जैसे हिन्द-प्रशांत क्षेत्र वैश्विक शक्ति संघर्ष का केंद्र बनता जा रहा है, अर्नाला जैसे युद्धपोत भारत की समुद्री शक्ति को नई धार दे रहे हैं। यह न केवल भारत की तटीय सुरक्षा को सुदृढ़ करेगा, बल्कि देश को एक आत्मनिर्भर समुद्री शक्ति के रूप में भी स्थापित करेगा।
प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी और रक्षा मंत्री राजनाथ सिंह के नेतृत्व में भारतीय नौसेना निरंतर सशक्त हो रही है। अर्नाला का नौसेना में शामिल होना भारत की रणनीतिक समुद्री दृष्टि का अगला बड़ा अध्याय है।
