Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth Poised to Become Next Vice Chief of Army Staff: A Future Chief in the Making

The corridors of South Block are abuzz with strong indications that Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, PVSM, AVSM, currently serving as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) Southern Command, is being tipped as the next Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS). Defence sources reveal that the move, expected to be formalised in the coming months, places General Seth firmly on the trajectory to eventually become the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of the Indian Army.
If confirmed, this would be a significant moment in the Army’s leadership transition, bringing to the helm an officer with a distinguished career spanning nearly four decades of operational, instructional, and strategic assignments. General Seth’s elevation will be watched closely, not only for its impact on the Army’s succession planning but also for the imprint of leadership values and professional rigour that he embodies.
A Legacy of Soldiering
Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth belongs to a rare legacy of military leadership. His father, Lieutenant General Krishna Mohan Seth (Retd.), served as the Adjutant General of the Indian Army and commanded both XXI Strike Corps and III Corps in the 1990s, before moving on to constitutional appointments as Governor of Tripura and Chhattisgarh. Following in such footsteps, General Dhiraj Seth has carved his own mark through excellence in every stage of his military journey.
Commissioned into the 2nd Lancers (Gardner’s Horse) on 20 December 1986 from the Indian Military Academy, he has consistently demonstrated professional brilliance. A recipient of the coveted Silver Centurion in the Young Officers’ Course, he stood first in the order of merit in several career-defining courses, including the Junior Command Course.
Academic and Professional Excellence
General Seth’s academic credentials are as impressive as his command achievements. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, and the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, he further pursued professional military education at the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), where he was adjudged the best all-round student. His international exposure includes the Defence Services Command and General Staff Course at the French Collège interarmées de Défense in 2006 and the International Defense Acquisition Management Course at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School.
Back home, he attended the Higher Command Course at the Army War College, Mhow, and later graduated from the prestigious National Defence College (NDC), New Delhi. These courses equipped him with a strategic mindset that has defined his leadership in diverse theatres.
Commanding from the Front
In the field, General Seth has commanded with distinction. His leadership portfolio includes command of the historic Skinner’s Horse, 98 Armoured Brigade, and a Rashtriya Rifles Sector in Jammu & Kashmir, where counter-insurgency challenges tested his operational acumen.
He later went on to command the XXI Corps, one of the Army’s premier Strike Corps, in July 2021, before moving on as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Delhi Area in August 2022. His command of Delhi Area was marked by high-profile ceremonial responsibilities, operational preparedness around the national capital, and coordination with civil administration.
On 1 November 2023, he assumed charge as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief South Western Command, succeeding Lieutenant General B. S. Raju. Less than a year later, on 1 July 2024, he was appointed the GOC-in-C Southern Command, one of the Army’s oldest and most strategically vital formations, succeeding Lieutenant General Ajai Kumar Singh.
Operational and International Exposure
General Seth’s international exposure extends beyond academic stints. Between 1995 and 1996, he served with the United Nations Angola Verification Mission III (UNAVEM III) as an operations officer, gaining firsthand experience in multinational peacekeeping and conflict resolution.
Within India, he held pivotal staff appointments, including Assistant Military Secretary in the Military Secretary’s Branch and Brigadier General Staff (Operations) at the South Western Command. His experience as Director General (Discipline, Ceremonial and Welfare) at the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army) further underscores his deep involvement in soldier welfare, discipline, and ceremonial traditions of the Army.
Mentor and Instructor
General Seth has also made significant contributions as an instructor, shaping future generations of officers. His stints at the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, and the School of Armoured Warfare, Ahmednagar, highlight his dedication to military pedagogy. Officers recall his ability to blend operational realities with academic rigour, earning him respect as both a mentor and leader.
Poised for Higher Responsibility
As Southern Army Commander, General Seth has overseen operations across a vast geographical expanse that includes critical borders with Pakistan and maritime responsibilities in peninsular India. Under his leadership, Southern Command has sharpened jointness with the Navy and Air Force, conducted large-scale operational exercises, and driven forward the Army’s push for indigenisation and modernisation in line with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
The possibility of his elevation as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff is being viewed as a natural progression of his career. Defence observers note that his extensive exposure to both operational commands and higher defence management makes him ideally suited for the Vice Chief’s role, which is pivotal in bridging strategic planning and operational readiness.
Towards the Chief’s Chair
Should General Seth move up as VCOAS, it will clear the path for him to eventually take over as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) upon superannuation of the current and next incumbents. The transition would mark the culmination of a remarkable career, bringing to the apex of India’s military leadership a soldier who represents professional excellence, operational grit, and intellectual depth.
His possible ascent also underscores the continuity of leadership traditions in the Indian Army, where legacy, merit, and service ethos converge to produce commanders capable of steering the Army through contemporary and future challenges.
A Moment of Strategic Importance
India’s security environment remains complex, with evolving challenges along its northern and western borders, a rapidly shifting technological battlefield, and the imperative of jointness across the three services. In this context, leadership transitions at the Army’s highest levels carry significant implications for operational preparedness, doctrinal evolution, and strategic planning.
General Dhiraj Seth’s expected appointment as Vice Chief—and in due course as Army Chief—comes at a time when India’s armed forces are undergoing transformative reforms in force structure, capability enhancement, and joint operational doctrines. His leadership will be crucial in steering this transition while keeping the Army combat-ready for both conventional and hybrid threats.
From being the best all-round student at DSSC to commanding one of the Army’s oldest formations, from serving in UN missions to preparing for the highest office in the Army, General Dhiraj Seth’s journey reflects a blend of legacy, merit, and modern military professionalism.

दक्षिण ब्लॉक के गलियारों में इन दिनों चर्चा गर्म है कि लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल धीरज सेठ, पीवीएसएम, एवीएसएम, जो वर्तमान में दक्षिणी कमान के जनरल ऑफिसर कमांडिंग-इन-चीफ (जीओसी-इन-सी) के पद पर तैनात हैं, उन्हें भारतीय सेना का अगला उपसेनाध्यक्ष (Vice Chief of Army Staff) नियुक्त किया जा सकता है। रक्षा सूत्रों का कहना है कि यह निर्णय आने वाले महीनों में औपचारिक रूप से लिया जाएगा। यह कदम उन्हें सेना प्रमुख (COAS) की कुर्सी की दिशा में अग्रसर कर देगा।

लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल धीरज सेठ एक ऐसी विरासत से आते हैं, जहाँ सैनिक नेतृत्व जीवन का हिस्सा रहा है। उनके पिता, लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल कृष्ण मोहन सेठ (सेवानिवृत्त), भारतीय सेना के एडजुटेंट जनरल रहे। उन्होंने 1990 के दशक में XXI स्ट्राइक कोर और III कोर की कमान संभाली। इसके बाद वे त्रिपुरा और छत्तीसगढ़ के राज्यपाल भी रहे। इसी परंपरा को आगे बढ़ाते हुए धीरज सेठ ने अपने करियर में हर मोर्चे पर उत्कृष्टता का परिचय दिया।
20 दिसम्बर 1986 को इंडियन मिलिट्री अकादमी, देहरादून से 2nd लांसर्स (गार्डनर हॉर्स) में कमीशन प्राप्त करने के बाद उन्होंने एक के बाद एक उपलब्धियां हासिल कीं। सिल्वर सेंचुरियन सम्मान Young Officers Course में प्राप्त करने से लेकर जूनियर कमांड कोर्स समेत कई सैन्य पाठ्यक्रमों में प्रथम स्थान हासिल करना उनकी मेधा का प्रमाण है।
शैक्षणिक और पेशेवर उत्कृष्टता
जनरल सेठ की शैक्षणिक उपलब्धियाँ उनकी कमान के अनुभव जितनी ही गौरवशाली हैं। वे राष्ट्रीय रक्षा अकादमी (NDA) खड़गवासला और भारतीय सैन्य अकादमी (IMA) देहरादून के पूर्व छात्र हैं। इसके बाद उन्होंने डिफेंस सर्विसेज स्टाफ कॉलेज (DSSC) से स्नातक किया, जहाँ वे सर्वश्रेष्ठ ऑल-राउंड छात्र घोषित हुए।
उनका अंतर्राष्ट्रीय अनुभव भी उल्लेखनीय है। 2006 में उन्होंने फ्रांस के Collège interarmées de Défense में डिफेंस सर्विसेज कमांड एंड जनरल स्टाफ कोर्स पूरा किया और अमेरिका के नेवल पोस्टग्रेजुएट स्कूल से International Defense Acquisition Management Course में भी उत्कृष्ट प्रदर्शन किया।
देश में उन्होंने आर्मी वॉर कॉलेज, महू का हायर कमांड कोर्स और नेशनल डिफेंस कॉलेज, नई दिल्ली से स्नातक कर अपनी रणनीतिक समझ को और मजबूत किया।
मोर्चे से कमान तक
जनरल सेठ ने जमीनी स्तर पर कई अहम पदों पर कार्य किया। उन्होंने ऐतिहासिक स्किनर्स हॉर्स, 98 आर्मर्ड ब्रिगेड और जम्मू-कश्मीर में रश्मि रायफल्स सेक्टर की कमान संभाली।
31 जुलाई 2021 को वे XXI कोर के जनरल ऑफिसर कमांडिंग बने। इसके बाद अगस्त 2022 में उन्हें दिल्ली एरिया की कमान सौंपी गई। यहाँ उन्होंने राजधानी की सुरक्षा, समारोहों और नागरिक प्रशासन के साथ सैन्य समन्वय की महत्वपूर्ण जिम्मेदारियाँ निभाईं।
1 नवम्बर 2023 को वे दक्षिण-पश्चिमी कमान के जीओसी-इन-सी बने, जहाँ उन्होंने लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल बी. एस. राजू का स्थान लिया। इसके बाद 1 जुलाई 2024 को उन्होंने दक्षिणी कमान की बागडोर संभाली और लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल अजय कुमार सिंह का स्थान लिया।
अंतरराष्ट्रीय और संचालनात्मक अनुभव
जनरल सेठ ने 1995–1996 में संयुक्त राष्ट्र अंगोला सत्यापन मिशन-III (UNAVEM III) में ऑपरेशंस ऑफिसर के रूप में कार्य किया। इससे उन्हें बहुराष्ट्रीय शांति स्थापना और संघर्ष समाधान का अनुभव मिला।
भारतीय सेना के भीतर उन्होंने असिस्टेंट मिलिट्री सेक्रेटरी, ब्रिगेड मेजर और ब्रिगेडियर जनरल स्टाफ (ऑपरेशंस) जैसे अहम पदों पर कार्य किया। इसके अलावा वे डायरेक्टर जनरल (डिसिप्लिन, सेरेमोनियल एंड वेलफेयर) के पद पर भी रहे, जहाँ उन्होंने सैनिक कल्याण और परंपराओं से जुड़े विषयों पर काम किया।
शिक्षक और मार्गदर्शक
जनरल सेठ ने प्रशिक्षण और शिक्षा में भी योगदान दिया। उन्होंने राष्ट्रीय रक्षा अकादमी (NDA) और स्कूल ऑफ आर्मर्ड वॉरफेयर, अहमदनगर में प्रशिक्षक के रूप में भावी अधिकारियों को दिशा दी। उनके छात्र आज भी उन्हें एक आदर्श शिक्षक और नेता मानते हैं।
उपसेनाध्यक्ष की ओर बढ़ते कदम
दक्षिणी कमान की जिम्मेदारी संभालते हुए जनरल सेठ ने विशाल क्षेत्र में सेना की संचालनात्मक और सामरिक तैयारियों को मजबूत किया। उन्होंने नौसेना और वायुसेना के साथ संयुक्त अभ्यास बढ़ाए और आत्मनिर्भर भारत (Atmanirbhar Bharat) के विज़न के तहत सेना के आधुनिकीकरण को तेज़ किया।
अब उनका उपसेनाध्यक्ष पद पर जाना एक स्वाभाविक प्रगति के रूप में देखा जा रहा है। रक्षा विशेषज्ञों का कहना है कि उनका व्यापक अनुभव, संचालनात्मक और रणनीतिक दृष्टिकोण उन्हें इस पद के लिए आदर्श विकल्प बनाता है।
सेना प्रमुख बनने की राह
यदि वे उपसेनाध्यक्ष बनते हैं, तो यह रास्ता उन्हें भविष्य में सेना प्रमुख (COAS) की कुर्सी तक ले जाएगा। यह भारतीय सेना के लिए ऐतिहासिक क्षण होगा, जब एक ऐसे अधिकारी को शीर्ष पद मिलेगा, जिसने शिक्षा, संचालन और रणनीति तीनों क्षेत्रों में असाधारण उपलब्धियां दर्ज की हैं।
सामरिक महत्व का समय
भारत की सुरक्षा स्थिति लगातार जटिल होती जा रही है। उत्तरी और पश्चिमी सीमाओं पर चुनौतियों के साथ-साथ नई तकनीकों और हाइब्रिड युद्ध का खतरा भी बढ़ रहा है। ऐसे समय में भारतीय सेना को दूरदृष्टि वाले नेतृत्व की जरूरत है।
जनरल धीरज सेठ का संभावित उपसेनाध्यक्ष और उसके बाद सेना प्रमुख बनना इस बदलाव की दिशा में एक निर्णायक कदम होगा। उनसे अपेक्षा होगी कि वे सेना को आधुनिकता, संयुक्तता और आत्मनिर्भरता की राह पर मजबूती से आगे ले जाएँ।
