Lt Gen JP Mathew Superannuates After Nearly Four Decades of Illustrious Service; Bids Farewell as Chief of Integrated Defence Staff
Pioneer of Jointness, Technology Modernisation, and Strategic Reforms, Lt Gen Mathew Leaves Behind a Strong Legacy in Indian Military Leadership
NEW DELHI — Lieutenant General JP Mathew, a decorated officer of the Punjab Regiment, relinquished the prestigious appointment of Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC) on April 30, 2025, upon superannuation, marking the end of an extraordinary military career spanning almost four decades.
On his final day in uniform, Lt Gen Mathew paid a solemn tribute at the National War Memorial, New Delhi, by laying a wreath in honour of fallen soldiers. He was also given a ceremonial Tri-Service Guard of Honour at the iconic South Block Lawns, in recognition of his invaluable contributions to India’s defence ecosystem.
Driving Jointness and Integration Among the Three Services
Lt Gen Mathew had taken over the appointment of CISC in April 2023, during a time when India’s military modernisation was pivoting toward theatre command structures, cyber and space dominance, and a more indigenous defence posture. As CISC, he was pivotal in fostering jointness, synergy, and interoperability among the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force.
His leadership played a key role in expanding the capacities of the Defence Cyber Agency (DCA) and the Defence Space Agency (DSA) — critical institutions shaping India’s capabilities in non-contact, technology-driven warfare. Under his guidance, India witnessed significant steps toward achieving credible offensive and defensive capabilities in cyberspace and space domains.
Champion of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in Defence
A forward-thinking military strategist, Lt Gen Mathew was a passionate advocate of self-reliance in defence. He pushed for increased collaboration with Indian defence industry, private sector innovators, and academic institutions, aligning with the national vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’. His efforts enabled indigenous defence technologies to find operational roles in tri-service commands and units.
He also facilitated reforms in military education and leadership grooming, overseeing the curriculum restructuring at premier institutions like the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), College of Defence Management (CDM), Military Institute of Technology (MIT), and the National Defence Academy (NDA).
A Reformer in Diversity and Disaster Response
Lt Gen Mathew was instrumental in enhancing gender inclusion in the armed forces. His tenure saw increasing participation of women officers in tri-service roles, both in command and staff assignments. He also boosted the Armed Forces’ capabilities in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), an increasingly vital area as India’s regional outreach expanded.
He represented India in several bilateral and multilateral military forums, playing a key role in promoting defence cooperation with neighbouring countries and supporting regional peace and stability across South Asia and the Indo-Pacific.
Honoured Career in Uniform
Commissioned into the Punjab Regiment in December 1985, Lt Gen Mathew rose through the ranks with honour and distinction. On January 9, 2022, he was appointed Colonel of the Regiment, symbolising his enduring bond with the troops and regimental ethos. Over the years, he commanded key operational units and served in several prestigious strategic and instructional appointments.
For his meritorious service, Lt Gen Mathew has been awarded India’s top military decorations including the:
- Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM)
- Uttam Yudh Seva Medal (UYSM)
- Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM)
- Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM)
As he steps away from active service, Lt Gen JP Mathew leaves behind a rich legacy of military reform, integration, technology infusion, and inclusive leadership, making him one of the most forward-looking officers of his generation.

संयुक्तता, रक्षा आधुनिकीकरण और रणनीतिक सुधारों के अग्रदूत रहे लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल मैथ्यू ने छोड़ी मजबूत विरासत
नई दिल्ली — भारतीय सेना के वरिष्ठ अधिकारी लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल जेपी मैथ्यू ने 30 अप्रैल 2025 को चीफ ऑफ इंटीग्रेटेड डिफेंस स्टाफ टू चेयरमैन चीफ्स ऑफ स्टाफ कमिटी (CISC) के पद से सेवानिवृत्त होकर लगभग 40 वर्षों के गौरवशाली सैन्य करियर का समापन किया।
अपनी अंतिम कार्यदिवस पर, उन्होंने नेशनल वॉर मेमोरियल, नई दिल्ली में शहीद जवानों को श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित की और साउथ ब्लॉक लॉन में उन्हें त्रि-सेवा गार्ड ऑफ ऑनर भी प्रदान किया गया।
सेनाओं में संयुक्तता के मजबूत समर्थक
अप्रैल 2023 में CISC का कार्यभार संभालने के बाद, लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल मैथ्यू ने भारतीय थलसेना, नौसेना और वायुसेना के बीच संयुक्त संचालन, संसाधनों का समन्वय और एकीकृत सैन्य दृष्टिकोण को मजबूती से बढ़ावा दिया। उनका ध्यान थिएटर कमांड मॉडल, साइबर-स्पेस युद्ध क्षमताओं और स्वदेशी तकनीक पर केंद्रित रहा।
साइबर और स्पेस क्षमताओं को दी नई ऊंचाई
उन्होंने Defence Cyber Agency और Defence Space Agency के विस्तार और आधुनिकीकरण में उल्लेखनीय योगदान दिया। भारत को साइबर युद्ध और अंतरिक्ष डोमेन में सक्षम और आत्मनिर्भर बनाने के लिए उनके दिशा-निर्देशन में कई तकनीकी पहलों की शुरुआत हुई।
‘आत्मनिर्भर भारत’ में रक्षा क्षेत्र का योगदान बढ़ाया
लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल मैथ्यू ने भारतीय रक्षा उद्योग और शैक्षणिक संस्थानों के साथ साझेदारी को बढ़ावा दिया और रक्षा अनुसंधान व विकास में घरेलू क्षमताओं को मजबूत किया। उन्होंने Defence Services Staff College, College of Defence Management, Military Institute of Technology और NDA के पाठ्यक्रमों में बदलाव लाकर भविष्य के सैन्य नेतृत्व को आधुनिक रणनीति से लैस किया।
महिलाओं की भागीदारी और आपदा राहत में अग्रणी भूमिका
उनकी कार्यकाल में महिला अधिकारियों की भागीदारी को नई दिशा मिली। उन्होंने त्रि-सेवा संगठनों में महिलाओं की भूमिका को बढ़ाया और उन्हें नेतृत्व और संचालन में सक्रिय भागीदार बनाया।
इसके साथ ही, उन्होंने आपदा राहत और मानवीय सहायता में सशस्त्र बलों की क्षमताओं को उन्नत किया, जिससे भारत ने क्षेत्रीय संकटों में प्रभावी भूमिका निभाई।
सम्मानित सैन्य जीवन और उच्च सैन्य पुरस्कार
दिसंबर 1985 में पंजाब रेजिमेंट में कमीशन प्राप्त करने के बाद, लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल मैथ्यू ने विभिन्न ऑपरेशनल कमांड, रणनीतिक और प्रशिक्षण पदों पर कार्य किया। 9 जनवरी 2022 को उन्हें कर्नल ऑफ द रेजिमेंट नियुक्त किया गया था।
उनकी उत्कृष्ट सेवाओं के लिए उन्हें देश के सर्वोच्च सैन्य सम्मानों से सम्मानित किया गया:
- परम विशिष्ट सेवा पदक (PVSM)
- उत्तम युद्ध सेवा पदक (UYSM)
- अति विशिष्ट सेवा पदक (AVSM)
- विशिष्ट सेवा पदक (VSM)
उनकी सेवानिवृत्ति भारतीय सशस्त्र बलों के लिए एक युग का अंत है। उनका योगदान न केवल सैन्य संरचना और रणनीति में दिखा, बल्कि उन्होंने आधुनिक, समावेशी और तकनीक-सक्षम सेनाओं की आधारशिला भी रखी।
