भारतीय सेना में बड़े स्तर पर नेतृत्व परिवर्तन: लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल धीरज सेठ बनेंगे नए वाइस चीफ, वेस्टर्न, ईस्टर्न और साउदर्न कमांड में भी नई नियुक्तियां
1 अप्रैल से भारतीय सेना के शीर्ष नेतृत्व में बड़ा फेरबदल
भारतीय सेना में आने वाले महीने से शीर्ष नेतृत्व में बड़ा बदलाव होने जा रहा है। 1 अप्रैल से कई वरिष्ठ थ्री-स्टार जनरल नई जिम्मेदारियां संभालेंगे, जिससे सेना के विभिन्न महत्वपूर्ण कमांड और सेना मुख्यालय में नेतृत्व संरचना में व्यापक बदलाव देखने को मिलेगा। यह फेरबदल ऐसे समय हो रहा है जब भारत की सुरक्षा चुनौतियां लगातार जटिल होती जा रही हैं और सेना को पश्चिमी सीमा पर पाकिस्तान तथा पूर्वी सीमा पर चीन से जुड़े रणनीतिक समीकरणों के बीच अपनी तैयारियों को मजबूत रखना पड़ता है। भारतीय सेना में यह नियमित प्रक्रिया है कि वरिष्ठ अधिकारियों को समय-समय पर विभिन्न कमांड और स्टाफ नियुक्तियों में स्थानांतरित किया जाता है ताकि रणनीतिक अनुभव, ऑपरेशनल समझ और प्रशासनिक क्षमता का बेहतर संतुलन बनाए रखा जा सके। इस बार के फेरबदल में वाइस चीफ ऑफ आर्मी स्टाफ के पद से लेकर तीन प्रमुख ऑपरेशनल कमांड के नेतृत्व तक महत्वपूर्ण बदलाव शामिल हैं।
लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल धीरज सेठ बनेंगे भारतीय सेना के नए वाइस चीफ ऑफ आर्मी स्टाफ
इस बड़े फेरबदल में सबसे महत्वपूर्ण नियुक्ति लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल धीरज सेठ की है, जो वर्तमान में पुणे स्थित साउदर्न कमांड के जनरल ऑफिसर कमांडिंग-इन-चीफ के रूप में कार्यरत हैं। 1 अप्रैल से वह नई दिल्ली स्थित सेना मुख्यालय में वाइस चीफ ऑफ आर्मी स्टाफ के पद पर कार्यभार संभालेंगे। वाइस चीफ का पद भारतीय सेना के सबसे महत्वपूर्ण पदों में से एक माना जाता है, जो सेना प्रमुख के बाद दूसरा सबसे वरिष्ठ पद होता है। इस पद पर बैठा अधिकारी सेना के प्रशासन, ऑपरेशनल योजना, आधुनिकीकरण कार्यक्रम, लॉजिस्टिक्स प्रबंधन और विभिन्न सैन्य रणनीतियों के क्रियान्वयन की निगरानी करता है।
लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल धीरज सेठ आर्मर्ड कोर के अधिकारी हैं और उन्हें दिसंबर 1986 में भारतीय सेना में कमीशन मिला था। लगभग चार दशक लंबे अपने सैन्य करियर में उन्होंने कई महत्वपूर्ण कमांड और स्टाफ नियुक्तियां संभाली हैं। वह बख्तरबंद फॉर्मेशनों के संचालन और बड़े पैमाने पर सैन्य तैनाती के प्रबंधन में व्यापक अनुभव रखते हैं। जुलाई 2024 में साउदर्न कमांड की कमान संभालने से पहले उन्होंने मथुरा स्थित XXI स्ट्राइक कोर का नेतृत्व किया था, जो भारतीय सेना की सबसे महत्वपूर्ण आक्रामक फॉर्मेशनों में से एक मानी जाती है। इस स्ट्राइक कोर की जिम्मेदारी युद्ध की स्थिति में पश्चिमी मोर्चे पर बड़े स्तर के आक्रामक अभियानों को अंजाम देने की होती है। ऐसे अनुभव के कारण लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल सेठ को सेना के रणनीतिक नेतृत्व में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाने वाला अधिकारी माना जाता है।
लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल पी.पी. सिंह बनेंगे वेस्टर्न आर्मी कमांडर
इस फेरबदल के तहत वर्तमान वाइस चीफ ऑफ आर्मी स्टाफ लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल पी.पी. सिंह को नई जिम्मेदारी दी गई है। वह 1 अप्रैल से चंडीमंदिर स्थित वेस्टर्न कमांड के जनरल ऑफिसर कमांडिंग-इन-चीफ के रूप में कार्यभार संभालेंगे। वह लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल मनोज कुमार कटियार की जगह लेंगे, जो वर्तमान में इस कमांड का नेतृत्व कर रहे हैं। वेस्टर्न कमांड भारतीय सेना के सबसे महत्वपूर्ण और संवेदनशील ऑपरेशनल कमांड में से एक है क्योंकि इसकी जिम्मेदारी पाकिस्तान से लगती सीमा पर सैन्य तैयारियों और ऑपरेशनल तैनाती की निगरानी करना है। पंजाब, जम्मू-कश्मीर और राजस्थान के बड़े हिस्से में सेना की कई प्रमुख फॉर्मेशन इसी कमांड के अधीन आती हैं।
लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल पी.पी. सिंह पैराशूट रेजिमेंट (स्पेशल फोर्सेस) के अधिकारी हैं, जो भारतीय सेना की सबसे प्रतिष्ठित और विशिष्ट इकाइयों में से एक मानी जाती है। स्पेशल फोर्सेस के अधिकारी का किसी आर्मी कमांड का नेतृत्व करना अपेक्षाकृत दुर्लभ माना जाता है, इसलिए उनका यह पदभार संभालना विशेष महत्व रखता है। स्पेशल फोर्सेस में सेवा के दौरान उन्होंने कई संवेदनशील ऑपरेशनल मिशनों में भाग लिया है और विशेष अभियान, आतंकवाद विरोधी ऑपरेशन तथा उच्च जोखिम वाले सैन्य अभियानों में व्यापक अनुभव प्राप्त किया है। ऐसे अधिकारी का वेस्टर्न कमांड की कमान संभालना भारत की पश्चिमी सीमा पर सैन्य रणनीति के लिहाज से महत्वपूर्ण माना जा रहा है।
लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल वी.एम.बी. कृष्णन संभालेंगे ईस्टर्न कमांड की कमान
भारतीय सेना के इस नेतृत्व परिवर्तन में एक और महत्वपूर्ण नियुक्ति लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल वी.एम.बी. कृष्णन की है, जो 1 अप्रैल से कोलकाता स्थित ईस्टर्न कमांड के नए जनरल ऑफिसर कमांडिंग-इन-चीफ बनेंगे। वर्तमान में वह सेना मुख्यालय में क्वार्टरमास्टर जनरल के पद पर कार्यरत हैं। ईस्टर्न कमांड भारतीय सेना का अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण ऑपरेशनल कमांड है, जिसकी जिम्मेदारी भारत-चीन सीमा के पूर्वी सेक्टर में लाइन ऑफ एक्चुअल कंट्रोल की निगरानी के साथ-साथ म्यांमार और बांग्लादेश से लगती सीमाओं पर सैन्य समन्वय बनाए रखना है।
लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल कृष्णन डोगरा रेजिमेंट के अधिकारी हैं और उनका सैन्य करियर कई महत्वपूर्ण ऑपरेशनल नियुक्तियों से भरा रहा है। उन्होंने पहले भारतीय सेना की रणनीतिक रूप से महत्वपूर्ण XVII माउंटेन स्ट्राइक कोर का नेतृत्व किया था। यह वही फॉर्मेशन है जिसे विशेष रूप से चीन सीमा पर संभावित सैन्य चुनौतियों से निपटने और पहाड़ी इलाकों में आक्रामक अभियानों की क्षमता विकसित करने के लिए स्थापित किया गया था। इसके अलावा वह सेना मुख्यालय में डायरेक्टर जनरल ऑफ इंफॉर्मेशन टेक्नोलॉजी के पद पर भी कार्य कर चुके हैं, जहां उन्होंने सेना की डिजिटल क्षमताओं और तकनीकी आधुनिकीकरण में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई थी। ईस्टर्न कमांड की कमान संभालते समय उनके सामने चीन सीमा से जुड़े सामरिक समीकरणों और क्षेत्रीय सुरक्षा चुनौतियों को संभालने की जिम्मेदारी होगी।
लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल कृष्णन, वर्तमान ईस्टर्न आर्मी कमांडर लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल राम चंदर तिवारी का स्थान लेंगे, जो जनवरी 2024 से इस कमांड का नेतृत्व कर रहे हैं और इस महीने के अंत में सेवानिवृत्त होने वाले हैं।
लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल संदीप जैन बनेंगे साउदर्न आर्मी कमांडर
इस नेतृत्व परिवर्तन के तहत लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल संदीप जैन को पुणे स्थित साउदर्न कमांड का नया आर्मी कमांडर नियुक्त किया गया है। वह लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल धीरज सेठ की जगह लेंगे, जो वाइस चीफ ऑफ आर्मी स्टाफ के पद पर जा रहे हैं। वर्तमान में लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल जैन साउदर्न कमांड में चीफ ऑफ स्टाफ के रूप में कार्य कर रहे हैं और कमांड की प्रशासनिक और ऑपरेशनल गतिविधियों में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभा रहे हैं।
लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल संदीप जैन इससे पहले अंबाला स्थित II कोर के कमांडर रह चुके हैं, जिसे खड़गा कोर के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। यह भारतीय सेना की प्रमुख स्ट्राइक कोर में से एक है और पश्चिमी मोर्चे पर संभावित आक्रामक अभियानों के लिए महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाती है। उनके पास बड़े पैमाने पर सैन्य फॉर्मेशन के नेतृत्व का व्यापक अनुभव है और यही अनुभव उन्हें साउदर्न कमांड जैसे विशाल क्षेत्रीय कमांड का नेतृत्व करने के लिए उपयुक्त बनाता है।
साउदर्न कमांड की जिम्मेदारी केवल दक्षिण भारत के सैन्य ठिकानों तक सीमित नहीं है, बल्कि यह समुद्री सुरक्षा, त्रि-सेवा समन्वय, प्रशिक्षण अभ्यास और हिंद महासागर क्षेत्र में सामरिक सहयोग जैसे कई महत्वपूर्ण पहलुओं से भी जुड़ी हुई है। ऐसे में इस कमांड का नेतृत्व करने वाले अधिकारी को व्यापक रणनीतिक दृष्टि और अंतर-सेवा समन्वय की समझ होना अत्यंत आवश्यक होता है।
क्षेत्रीय सुरक्षा चुनौतियों के बीच नेतृत्व परिवर्तन का रणनीतिक महत्व
भारतीय सेना के शीर्ष नेतृत्व में यह फेरबदल ऐसे समय में हो रहा है जब देश की सुरक्षा स्थिति बहुस्तरीय चुनौतियों का सामना कर रही है। पश्चिमी सीमा पर पाकिस्तान के साथ संघर्ष विराम व्यवस्था के बावजूद लगातार सैन्य सतर्कता बनाए रखना आवश्यक है। वहीं पूर्वी सीमा पर चीन के साथ लाइन ऑफ एक्चुअल कंट्रोल पर सैन्य तैनाती और रणनीतिक प्रतिस्पर्धा जारी है। इसके अलावा आधुनिक युद्ध के नए आयाम जैसे साइबर युद्ध, ड्रोन आधारित युद्ध प्रणाली, अंतरिक्ष आधारित निगरानी और आर्टिफिशियल इंटेलिजेंस आधारित सैन्य तकनीकों का तेजी से विकास हो रहा है।
इन परिस्थितियों में सेना के वरिष्ठ नेतृत्व की भूमिका केवल पारंपरिक सैन्य संचालन तक सीमित नहीं रह जाती, बल्कि उन्हें सेना के आधुनिकीकरण, तकनीकी रूपांतरण और भविष्य की युद्ध रणनीतियों को भी दिशा देनी होती है। वाइस चीफ ऑफ आर्मी स्टाफ और विभिन्न आर्मी कमांडर इन सभी पहलुओं में निर्णायक भूमिका निभाते हैं।
अनुभव और नेतृत्व क्षमता के साथ सेना का नया कमांड ढांचा

Major Leadership Reshuffle in the Indian Army: Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth to Become Vice Chief, Key Commanders Appointed for Western, Eastern and Southern Commands
Indian Army Prepares for Major Top Brass Reorganisation from April 1
In a significant development within the leadership structure of the Indian Army, a major reshuffle of senior commanders is set to take place from April 1, reflecting the institution’s continued focus on operational preparedness, strategic leadership transition, and the evolving security environment facing the country. Several senior three-star officers will assume new responsibilities across crucial operational commands and at Army Headquarters in New Delhi. The reshuffle includes the appointment of a new Vice Chief of Army Staff as well as new General Officers Commanding-in-Chief for some of the Army’s most critical commands responsible for managing the western and eastern fronts, which remain strategically sensitive due to the presence of Pakistan and China along India’s borders. These leadership transitions are part of the Indian Army’s regular command rotation system designed to ensure operational continuity while bringing fresh strategic perspectives to key appointments.
Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth to Take Over as Vice Chief of Army Staff
One of the most prominent appointments in this reshuffle is that of Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, who is currently serving as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Pune-based Southern Command. From April 1, Lt Gen Seth will move to Army Headquarters in New Delhi to assume the position of Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS), one of the most senior roles within the Indian Army hierarchy. The Vice Chief of Army Staff functions as the principal staff officer to the Chief of Army Staff and plays a crucial role in overseeing operational planning, modernization, logistics management, and strategic policy implementation across the force. As the Army continues to adapt to emerging challenges including technological warfare, multi-domain operations, and integrated theatre planning, the position of VCOAS carries significant responsibility in ensuring the effective functioning of the Army’s vast organisational structure.
Lt Gen Seth is a highly experienced officer from the Armoured Corps who was commissioned into the Indian Army in December 1986. Over nearly four decades of distinguished service, he has held numerous command and staff appointments across different operational theatres. His career has seen him command armoured formations and serve in important staff roles at Army Headquarters. Prior to assuming command of Southern Command in July 2024, Lt Gen Seth served as the General Officer Commanding of the Mathura-based XXI Strike Corps, one of the Indian Army’s premier strike formations designed for offensive operations on the western front. His experience in commanding large mechanized formations and managing operational readiness has made him one of the most respected officers in the current generation of senior Army leadership.
Lt Gen P.P. Singh to Become Western Army Commander
Another major change will see Lieutenant General P.P. Singh, who currently serves as the Vice Chief of Army Staff, moving to take over as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Command headquartered at Chandimandir near Chandigarh. He will succeed Lieutenant General Manoj Kumar Katiyar when he assumes the role on April 1. The Western Command is widely regarded as one of the most strategically important operational commands of the Indian Army, as it is responsible for overseeing military operations along the Pakistan border across several states including Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, and parts of Rajasthan.
Lt Gen P.P. Singh is an officer from the elite Parachute Regiment (Special Forces), making his appointment particularly notable. Officers from Special Forces backgrounds rarely rise to command an Army Command, making Lt Gen Singh among the few to achieve this distinction. His operational experience within elite units known for specialized missions, unconventional warfare, and high-risk operations adds a unique dimension to his leadership profile. Western Command plays a critical role in maintaining deterrence and operational readiness along the western front, where the Indian Army maintains several strike corps and defensive formations tasked with countering potential threats from Pakistan. With the evolving regional security environment and continued ceasefire management along the Line of Control, the leadership of Western Command remains crucial to India’s national security posture.
Lt Gen V.M.B. Krishnan to Lead Eastern Command
The reshuffle will also bring a significant change in the Eastern theatre, where Lieutenant General V.M.B. Krishnan will assume charge as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command headquartered in Kolkata. The Eastern Command is responsible for overseeing operations along India’s eastern frontier, including the sensitive Line of Actual Control with China in sectors such as Arunachal Pradesh, as well as managing security coordination along the borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh.
Lt Gen Krishnan is currently serving as the Quartermaster General at Army Headquarters, a position that involves oversight of logistics, supply chains, and equipment support across the entire Army. An officer of the Dogra Regiment, Lt Gen Krishnan has an extensive operational background that includes command of the strategically significant XVII Corps, also known as the Mountain Strike Corps. This formation was specifically raised to strengthen India’s offensive capabilities along the China border and to enhance deterrence in the eastern sector. His experience in mountain warfare formations and his exposure to high-level planning at Army Headquarters are expected to play a key role in managing the complex operational challenges of the eastern theatre.
Lt Gen Krishnan will succeed Lieutenant General Ram Chander Tiwari, who has been heading the Eastern Command since January 2024 and is scheduled to retire later this month. During his tenure, Lt Gen Tiwari oversaw the continued operational deployment of Indian Army formations along the LAC in eastern sectors amid the broader context of India-China military tensions that have persisted since the 2020 border standoff.
Lt Gen Sandeep Jain to Take Charge of Southern Command
As part of the leadership changes, Lieutenant General Sandeep Jain will take over as the new General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Command in Pune. He will replace Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth when the latter moves to Army Headquarters to assume the position of Vice Chief of Army Staff. Lt Gen Jain currently serves as the Chief of Staff at Southern Command and has played a key role in overseeing operational planning and coordination within the command.
Before taking up his current role, Lt Gen Jain commanded the Ambala-based II Corps, also known as the Kharga Corps. This formation is one of the Indian Army’s most important strike corps and has historically been tasked with offensive operations along the western front. His experience in commanding such a large and strategically important formation has prepared him well for the responsibility of leading Southern Command, which oversees military formations across a vast geographical area including peninsular India and several island territories. The command also plays a vital role in joint operations, training exercises, and maintaining readiness for contingencies in the Indian Ocean region.
Strategic Importance of the Reshuffle Amid Regional Security Challenges
The upcoming reshuffle of the Indian Army’s senior leadership comes at a time when India continues to face complex security challenges on multiple fronts. The western border remains sensitive due to continued tensions with Pakistan, including ceasefire management along the Line of Control and the need to maintain strong defensive and offensive capabilities in the region. At the same time, the eastern sector remains strategically significant because of the ongoing military standoff with China along the Line of Actual Control, particularly in Arunachal Pradesh and Ladakh sectors.
In addition to traditional military threats, the Indian Army is also navigating emerging domains such as cyber warfare, space-based surveillance, unmanned systems, and artificial intelligence-enabled battlefield technologies. Senior commanders at the level of Army Commanders and the Vice Chief of Army Staff play a crucial role in shaping the Army’s operational doctrine, modernization plans, and technological transformation in response to these evolving challenges.
Continuity, Experience and Operational Expertise in Army Leadership
The April 1 reshuffle reflects the Indian Army’s established tradition of leadership rotation among senior officers with diverse operational backgrounds. Each of the officers assuming new roles brings decades of field experience, command exposure, and strategic planning expertise gained through service in some of the Army’s most demanding operational environments. Such transitions ensure continuity within the institution while also allowing the leadership structure to adapt to changing security dynamics.
With Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth moving into the crucial role of Vice Chief of Army Staff and new commanders taking charge of Western, Eastern, and Southern Commands, the Indian Army will enter the next phase of its operational and strategic journey with a refreshed leadership structure.
