Manipur: Ambush on Assam Rifles Convoy in Bishnupur Leaves Two Soldiers Martyred, Five Injured

In yet another chilling reminder of the fragile security situation in Manipur, armed men ambushed a paramilitary convoy in Bishnupur district on Friday evening, killing two soldiers of the Assam Rifles and injuring at least five others. The brazen attack occurred at approximately 5:50 p.m. near the Nambol Sabal Leikai area, as a vehicle-borne column of the 33 Assam Rifles was moving between its Company Operating Bases in Patsoi and Nambol.
The Ambush and Immediate Response
According to Defence PRO officials, the convoy came under sudden and heavy gunfire as it was moving through the semi-urban stretch linking Imphal to Bishnupur. Initial reports indicate that the attackers were positioned strategically to trap the paramilitary vehicle, taking advantage of the dense foliage and built-up areas that line the route.
In the ensuing gunfire, two personnel of the Assam Rifles sustained fatal injuries while five others were wounded. Quick-thinking soldiers immediately retaliated, returning fire to pin down the attackers, even as reinforcements were rushed from nearby posts. The injured personnel were swiftly evacuated to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, where doctors reported them to be stable after emergency treatment.
Condemnation from Raj Bhawan and Political Leadership
The incident drew swift condemnation from both state and central leadership. Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla expressed anguish at the loss of lives and issued a strong statement from Raj Bhawan late Friday night.
“The Governor of Manipur strongly condemned the attack on security forces this evening, in which two brave jawans of the Assam Rifles made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. The Governor expressed profound grief and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of the martyred soldiers, acknowledging their unwavering courage and dedication in protecting the nation. He further conveyed prayers for the speedy recovery of those who sustained injuries in the incident,” the official statement read.
Reiterating the government’s firm stand, the Governor added that such “heinous acts of violence will not be tolerated under any circumstances and will be met with the strongest resolve to safeguard peace and stability in the region.”
Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh also condemned the ambush in a heartfelt message on X, stating, “I am deeply shaken to hear about the ambush on our brave 33 Assam Rifles personnel at Nambol Sabal Leikai. The loss of two jawans and injuries to several others is a cruel blow to us all. My deepest condolences to the families of the fallen and prayers for the quick recovery of the injured. Their courage and sacrifice will remain in our hearts forever. The perpetrators of this heinous act must face the harshest punishment.”
Security Forces Launch Search Operations
Even as the grieving families mourn their loss, search operations were immediately launched by security forces to track down and apprehend the armed group behind the ambush. Senior Army and Assam Rifles officials confirmed that combing operations had been intensified in the surrounding villages and forested tracts.
Although no insurgent outfit has yet claimed responsibility for the ambush, the attack bears the hallmarks of coordinated strikes by Manipur-based armed groups that have remained active despite heavy deployment of central forces in the region. Security officials are not ruling out the possibility of external support or cross-border facilitation, given Manipur’s sensitive geographical location and history of insurgency.
A Fragile Peace and a Renewed Challenge
The ambush has once again underscored the fragile security environment in Manipur, a state that has been reeling under ethnic clashes and insurgency-linked unrest for over a year. Even as peace talks and ceasefire agreements have been floated at various times, the recurrence of targeted strikes against security forces has posed renewed challenges to peace-keeping operations.
The Assam Rifles, often referred to as the “Sentinels of the North East,” have borne the brunt of counter-insurgency duties in the state. Their forward operating bases and vehicle patrols frequently face ambush attempts, highlighting both the resilience of the force and the risks its personnel continue to endure in their mission of maintaining law and order.
Nation Mourns the Fallen
Across Manipur and beyond, tributes poured in for the two soldiers who laid down their lives in the line of duty. Defence circles in New Delhi described the attack as a stark reminder of the sacrifices made daily by men in uniform. The Ministry of Defence is expected to brief Parliament on the incident, and central security agencies have been asked to submit a detailed report on the operational circumstances that led to the ambush.
The mortal remains of the martyred jawans will be sent to their native towns with full military honors. As is tradition, wreath-laying ceremonies are likely to be held in Imphal before their final journey home.
Looking Ahead
While the state reels from this fresh wave of violence, security experts believe that Friday’s ambush could trigger a major recalibration of counter-insurgency strategies in the Bishnupur and Imphal Valley areas. Sources indicate that more reinforcements may be deployed, and night curfews could be tightened in vulnerable pockets.
For the families of the fallen, however, the pain of loss remains immeasurable. For the nation, the ambush is a sobering reminder that peace in Manipur is still a distant dream, and that the men guarding its borders and streets continue to pay the price with their lives.

मणिपुर में अशांति और असुरक्षा का एक और दर्दनाक दृश्य सामने आया, जब शुक्रवार की शाम बिष्णुपुर जिले में सशस्त्र बदमाशों ने असम राइफल्स के एक वाहन पर घात लगाकर हमला कर दिया। इस हमले में दो सैनिक शहीद हो गए, जबकि पांच अन्य घायल हो गए। घटना शाम लगभग 5:50 बजे नमबोल सबल लीकाई इलाके में उस समय हुई, जब 33 असम राइफल्स का वाहन स्तंभ पटसोई कंपनी ऑपरेटिंग बेस से नमबोल कंपनी ऑपरेटिंग बेस की ओर जा रहा था।
अचानक हमला और जवाबी कार्रवाई
रक्षा प्रवक्ता के अनुसार, जैसे ही काफिला नमबोल सबल लीकाई के समीप पहुँचा, आतंकियों ने अचानक गोलियों की बौछार कर दी। हमलावर घात लगाकर बैठे थे और उन्होंने इलाके की झाड़ियों व घनी बस्तियों का फायदा उठाया। मुठभेड़ में दो जवान मौके पर ही शहीद हो गए, जबकि पांच अन्य घायल हो गए। साथी सैनिकों ने तुरंत जवाबी कार्रवाई करते हुए फायरिंग की और घायलों को सुरक्षित बाहर निकाला। उन्हें इम्फाल स्थित रीजनल इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ मेडिकल साइंसेस (RIMS) में भर्ती कराया गया, जहां डॉक्टरों ने उनकी हालत स्थिर बताई है।
राज्यपाल और नेताओं की कड़ी निंदा
हमले की खबर मिलते ही मणिपुर राजभवन और राजनीतिक नेतृत्व ने घटना की निंदा की। मणिपुर के राज्यपाल अजय कुमार भल्ला ने कहा, “आज शाम सुरक्षा बलों पर हुए इस कायराना हमले में असम राइफल्स के दो बहादुर जवानों ने देश की रक्षा करते हुए सर्वोच्च बलिदान दिया। राज्यपाल ने शहीदों के परिजनों के प्रति गहरी संवेदना व्यक्त की और घायलों के शीघ्र स्वास्थ्य लाभ की प्रार्थना की।”
राजभवन की ओर से जारी बयान में स्पष्ट कहा गया कि इस प्रकार के जघन्य कृत्य किसी भी परिस्थिति में बर्दाश्त नहीं किए जाएंगे और शांति व स्थिरता बनाए रखने के लिए कठोरतम कार्रवाई की जाएगी।
पूर्व मुख्यमंत्री एन. बीरेन सिंह ने भी X (पूर्व ट्विटर) पर अपनी गहरी संवेदना व्यक्त करते हुए लिखा, “नमबोल सबल लीकाई में 33 असम राइफल्स के बहादुर जवानों पर हुए हमले से मैं बेहद स्तब्ध हूँ। दो जवानों की शहादत और कई के घायल होने की खबर हम सभी के लिए गहरा आघात है। शहीदों के परिवारों के प्रति मेरी संवेदना और घायलों के शीघ्र स्वस्थ होने की प्रार्थना करता हूँ। इस जघन्य हमले के अपराधियों को कठोरतम दंड मिलना चाहिए।”
सर्च ऑपरेशन जारी
हमले के बाद इलाके में तुरंत बड़े पैमाने पर तलाशी अभियान शुरू कर दिया गया। सुरक्षा बलों ने आसपास के गाँवों और जंगल क्षेत्रों को घेरकर सघन सर्च अभियान चलाया है। अभी तक किसी संगठन ने हमले की जिम्मेदारी नहीं ली है, लेकिन प्रारंभिक जांच में आशंका जताई जा रही है कि यह हमला मणिपुर आधारित सक्रिय उग्रवादी संगठनों द्वारा सुनियोजित तरीके से किया गया।
नाजुक शांति पर फिर संकट
इस घटना ने एक बार फिर मणिपुर की अस्थिर सुरक्षा स्थिति को उजागर कर दिया है। लंबे समय से राज्य जातीय हिंसा और उग्रवाद की समस्या से जूझ रहा है। असम राइफल्स, जिसे “नॉर्थ ईस्ट का प्रहरी” कहा जाता है, लगातार ऐसी परिस्थितियों में शांति और कानून व्यवस्था बनाए रखने में जुटा है। लेकिन इस तरह के हमले उनके सामने खड़ी चुनौतियों की गंभीरता को दर्शाते हैं।
शहादत को नमन
देशभर से शहीद जवानों को श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित की जा रही है। उनके पार्थिव शरीर पूरे सैन्य सम्मान के साथ उनके गृह नगरों में भेजे जाएंगे। इम्फाल में पारंपरिक श्रद्धांजलि समारोह आयोजित किया जाएगा।
यह हमला न केवल मणिपुर बल्कि पूरे देश के लिए एक चेतावनी है कि शांति की राह अभी लंबी है और इसके लिए हमारे सैनिक लगातार अपना जीवन दांव पर लगाते रहेंगे।
