Mid Sea Medical Evacuation By Icg Onboard Mt Global Star   

Indian Coast Guard District Headquarters – 4 (Kerala & Mahe) successfully coordinated the Medical Evacuation of a distressed Mariner Mr Pradeep Das from Motor Tanker Global Star on 24 Jul 23 by Advanced Light Helicopter ALH MK-III.  The vessel was enroute from Khorfakkan, UAE to Colombo, Sri Lanka, wherein during the passage, the vessel developed a technical snag on 10 July 23 and was anchored 52 Miles west of Kozhikode.  

On 23rd Jul Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, Mumbai received information through Centro Internazionale Radio Medic (CIRM), Italy that one of the crew onboard Global Star had a suspected stroke, High Blood Pressure, and partial paralysis on the left side and required medical evacuation at the earliest. The information was received by CIRM through Tele-Medical Assistance at Sea system. The MRCC, Mumbai further tasked the Maritime Rescue Sub Center (MRSC), Kochi to coordinate the operation.

MRSC, Kochi effectively established communication with Vessel to provide telemedical assistance and plan the evacuation of the distressed mariner. ICGS Arnvesh who was maintaining a vigil in the area was immediately diverted for assistance. Understanding the vulnerability of the situation, rough seas, and prevailing weather conditions, CG ALH was launched on 24th July morning in medical configuration to carry out mid-sea medical evacuation 112 NM in sea from Kochi. 

Amidst Challenging weather, heavy rain, and poor visibility, the Professional Pilots of ICG Aircraft reached MT Global Star in the shortest possible time and successfully evacuated the distressed mariner.  On embarking, the ICG team medically managed the patient enroute to Kochi with portable oxygen support and medical aid. On arrival at Coast Guard Air Enclave (CGAE) Kochi, Nedumbaserry at 1102 Hrs the patient was transferred to Gautam Hospital for further medical management. 

The Exemplary operation undertaken by Professional Pilots and swift coordination by Indian Coast Guard MRSC, Kochi enabled the saving of a precious life at sea.
