Operation Sindhu: India Successfully Evacuates Over 4,400 Nationals from Conflict Zones in Iran and Israel Amid West Asia Crisis

Government Executes Swift, Multi-Nation Evacuation Operation; PM Modi’s Strong Commitment to Citizens’ Safety Abroad Applauded

In a remarkable display of swift diplomacy, logistical precision, and humanitarian commitment, the Government of India has successfully evacuated over 4,400 Indian nationals from conflict-hit regions of Iran and Israel under Operation Sindhu, launched on June 18, 2025.

This large-scale evacuation, orchestrated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in close coordination with the Indian Armed Forces, foreign governments, and Indian Missions across West Asia, underscores India’s unwavering resolve to safeguard its citizens, no matter where they are in the world.

Crisis in West Asia Triggers Emergency Evacuation Plan

The rapidly escalating conflict in West Asia, particularly involving Iran and Israel, prompted the Indian government to activate an emergency evacuation operation. Recognizing the immediate threat to the lives of thousands of Indians stranded in the region, the MEA, under the direct guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, launched Operation Sindhu, a comprehensive rescue effort spanning multiple countries and logistical challenges.

Massive Airlift from Iran: 3,597 Indians Brought Back Safely

The first and most extensive phase of Operation Sindhu focused on evacuating Indian nationals from Iran, a country significantly impacted by the unfolding crisis.

• A total of 3,597 Indian nationals have been successfully evacuated from Iran.
• The evacuees included students, workers, professionals, pilgrims, and fishermen, hailing from more than 15 Indian states.
• Importantly, over 1,500 women and 500 children were among those brought back to safety.
• The evacuation operation also extended help to 14 OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card-holders, 9 Nepali nationals, 4 Sri Lankan nationals, and 1 Iranian spouse of an Indian citizen, highlighting India’s humanitarian approach.

Indian Missions in Tehran, Yerevan (Armenia), and Ashgabat (Turkmenistan) played a pivotal role in coordinating the evacuation through land routes to Armenia and Turkmenistan. Once Iran opened its airspace for evacuation flights on June 20, following India’s diplomatic request, the operation gained further momentum.

A total of 15 special evacuation flights, including Indian Air Force (IAF) C-17 aircraft, were deployed between June 18 and June 26, facilitating the safe return of stranded Indians to New Delhi.

Operation Sindhu Extends to Israel: 818 Evacuated Amid Escalating Conflict

As tensions escalated in Israel, the second leg of Operation Sindhu was swiftly activated on June 23.

• 818 Indian nationals were evacuated from Israel through neighboring countries Jordan and Egypt.
• Indian Missions in Tel Aviv, Ramallah, Amman, and Cairo facilitated the movement of Indian citizens across land borders.
• Evacuation flights were operated from Amman and Sharm el-Sheikh between June 22 and June 25, including three IAF C-17 aircraft, ensuring the timely and safe return of Indian citizens.

The evacuees from Israel included students, workers, and professionals, many of whom found themselves stranded amid rapidly deteriorating security conditions.

Evacuation Paused After Airspace Reopens; Vigil Continues

With the reopening of regional airspace on June 25, evacuation operations under Operation Sindhu were temporarily halted. However, the MEA has assured that the Indian government remains fully prepared to take further action depending on the evolving situation in West Asia.

Indian Missions across the region, especially in Iran, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Armenia, and Turkmenistan, remain actively engaged with host governments and the Indian diaspora, monitoring developments and providing assistance as needed.

A Testament to India’s Global Commitment to Its Citizens

Operation Sindhu stands as yet another example of India’s growing reputation for executing large-scale, complex evacuation missions to protect its citizens abroad. The operation is reminiscent of past successful missions such as Operation Ganga in Ukraine, Operation Kaveri in Sudan, and Operation Devi Shakti in Afghanistan.

The MEA, while expressing gratitude to the governments of Iran, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Armenia, and Turkmenistan, emphasized that these evacuations were made possible due to excellent diplomatic coordination and the goodwill India enjoys globally.

पश्चिम एशिया में जारी गंभीर संकट के बीच भारत ने एक बार फिर यह साबित कर दिया कि वह अपने नागरिकों की सुरक्षा के लिए किसी भी हद तक जा सकता है। ऑपरेशन सिंधु के तहत भारत सरकार ने अब तक ईरान और इज़राइल से कुल 4,415 भारतीयों को सुरक्षित वापस ला दिया है।

18 जून को शुरू हुए इस आपातकालीन अभियान में भारतीय वायुसेना के सी-17 विमान, विशेष उड़ानें और भारतीय मिशनों की अहम भूमिका रही। इस मिशन ने न केवल भारतीय नागरिकों की रक्षा की, बल्कि भारत की वैश्विक कूटनीतिक शक्ति और मानवीय प्रतिबद्धता को भी रेखांकित किया।

पश्चिम एशिया में बिगड़े हालात, भारत ने तुरंत शुरू किया ऑपरेशन सिंधु

ईरान और इज़राइल के बीच बिगड़ते हालात के मद्देनज़र, भारत सरकार ने 18 जून को ऑपरेशन सिंधु की शुरुआत की। प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी के नेतृत्व में विदेश मंत्रालय, भारतीय सशस्त्र बलों और विभिन्न देशों में भारतीय मिशनों ने समन्वय कर यह बड़ा अभियान शुरू किया।

• कुल 3,597 भारतीय नागरिक ईरान से सुरक्षित भारत लौटे।
• इनमें छात्र, मजदूर, पेशेवर, तीर्थयात्री और मछुआरे शामिल रहे, जो देश के 15 से अधिक राज्यों से संबंधित थे।
• सुरक्षित लोटने वालों में 1,500 से अधिक महिलाएं और 500 बच्चे शामिल थे।
• इसके अलावा, 14 ओसीआई कार्ड धारक, 9 नेपाली नागरिक, 4 श्रीलंकाई नागरिक, और एक भारतीय नागरिक की ईरानी पत्नी को भी वापस लाया गया।

तेहरान, येरवान (आर्मेनिया) और अश्गाबात (तुर्कमेनिस्तान) में भारतीय मिशनों ने जमीनी रास्तों से लोगों को आर्मेनिया और तुर्कमेनिस्तान तक पहुंचाया। भारत के अनुरोध पर ईरान ने 20 जून को अपने हवाई क्षेत्र को खोला, जिससे राहत अभियान में तेजी आई।

18 जून से 26 जून के बीच कुल 15 विशेष उड़ानों, जिनमें भारतीय वायुसेना के सी-17 विमान भी शामिल थे, के जरिए भारतीय नागरिकों को नई दिल्ली वापस लाया गया।

• 22 से 25 जून के बीच अम्मान और शर्म-अल-शेख से विशेष उड़ानों के जरिए नागरिकों को भारत वापस लाया गया।
• इन उड़ानों में भारतीय वायुसेना के तीन सी-17 विमान भी शामिल रहे।

हवाई क्षेत्र खुलते ही राहत अभियान फिलहाल रोका गया, स्थिति पर नजर जारी

25 जून को क्षेत्रीय हवाई क्षेत्र के खुलने के बाद राहत अभियान को फिलहाल रोक दिया गया है। लेकिन विदेश मंत्रालय ने स्पष्ट किया कि अगर पश्चिम एशिया में हालात फिर से बिगड़ते हैं, तो भारत तुरंत कदम उठाएगा।

भारतीय मिशन लगातार ईरान, इज़राइल, जॉर्डन, मिस्र, आर्मेनिया और तुर्कमेनिस्तान की सरकारों और भारतीय समुदाय के संपर्क में बने हुए हैं।

भारत की वैश्विक प्रतिबद्धता और मानवीय पहल का प्रतीक बना ऑपरेशन सिंधु
