Operation Sindoor Bravehearts Were Honoured Without Delay, Defence Ministry Rejects Claims of Late Recognition

New Delhi, June 27, 2026: The Ministry of Defence has rejected reports suggesting that the supreme sacrifice of six Indian military personnel during Operation Sindoor was acknowledged or brought to public attention only recently, clarifying that the fallen soldiers were honoured by the nation at the earliest opportunity.
In an official statement titled “Honouring the Bravehearts”, issued through the Press Information Bureau on June 27, 2026, the Ministry said that reports appearing in certain sections of the media and on social media platforms had incorrectly portrayed the recognition of the six bravehearts as a recent development.
The Ministry emphasised that the sacrifices of the soldiers were formally acknowledged soon after Operation Sindoor and that solemn tributes were paid to them well before the reports that led to the latest controversy.
According to the statement, the then Director General of Military Operations paid tribute to the fallen soldiers during the official press conference held on May 11, 2025. During the briefing, the senior military officer specifically acknowledged their sacrifice in the line of duty during Operation Sindoor.
The acknowledgement during the official press conference constituted an early and public tribute by the Indian Armed Forces to the personnel who had laid down their lives during the operation. The Ministry said this clearly disproved suggestions that their sacrifice had remained unrecognised or undisclosed until recently.
The six bravehearts were subsequently conferred with gallantry awards, which were officially announced through a press release issued on August 14, 2025. The Ministry described the awards as a formal recognition by the nation of their courage, devotion to duty and supreme sacrifice in keeping with the highest traditions of the Indian Defence Forces.
The Indian Army’s official social media platforms also carried tributes to the fallen personnel without delay, ensuring that their service and sacrifice were publicly remembered and honoured.
The recognition of the soldiers and support for their families continued during subsequent military ceremonies. On October 8, 2025, the Chief of the Air Staff presented gallantry awards to the families of the fallen personnel during a solemn ceremony.
Further recognition took place during the Army Day Parade held in Jaipur on January 15, 2026. During the event, the Chief of the Army Staff presented the Sena Medal for Gallantry to the families of three of the soldiers who had made the supreme sacrifice during Operation Sindoor.
The Ministry said these ceremonies reaffirmed the enduring commitment of the Indian Defence Forces to honouring personnel who lay down their lives while serving the country. The presentation of medals to the next of kin also ensured that the courage and sacrifice of the soldiers were formally recognised in the presence of their families and the nation.
Addressing questions regarding the engraving of the soldiers’ names at the National War Memorial, the Ministry clarified that the process is governed by an established and well-defined protocol.
The Defence Forces follow the prescribed procedures with due diligence, care and reverence, considering the solemn nature of the honour being conferred. The statement rejected allegations that the required process had not been followed, describing such suggestions as factually incorrect.
The National War Memorial in New Delhi honours members of the Indian Armed Forces who have made the supreme sacrifice in the defence of the country. The addition of names to the memorial is carried out only after the completion of established administrative and ceremonial procedures.
The Ministry expressed regret that an avoidable and unfounded controversy had been created over the recognition of the Operation Sindoor bravehearts. It warned that misleading narratives could misrepresent established facts and cause unnecessary anguish to the families of fallen soldiers.
Such controversies, the statement said, also risk detracting from the dignity, gratitude and reverence owed to military personnel who sacrificed their lives in the service of the nation.
The Ministry urged media organisations, social media users and other stakeholders to exercise responsibility and restraint while reporting on matters involving fallen soldiers. It called upon all concerned to verify information before publication and to refrain from circulating unverified claims.
Issues concerning military casualties, gallantry awards and the commemoration of fallen personnel must be handled with sensitivity, particularly because inaccurate reports can deeply affect bereaved families.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Ministry said the Indian Defence Forces remain steadfast in honouring every soldier who has offered the supreme sacrifice in the defence of the country.
