Pakistan Army Faces Major October 2026 Reshuffle: Seven Lieutenant Generals Set to Retire, Corps Commands and ISI Likely to See New Faces

BY DEFENCE JOURNALIST SAHIL | T.I.N. NETWORK

Why October 2026 Has Become Crucial for Pakistan Army Leadership

October 2026 is emerging as a potentially significant month for the Pakistan Army, with the retirement of several senior three-star officers expected to trigger a major reshuffle across key military commands, intelligence institutions and strategic appointments. The proposed transition could affect important positions ranging from Corps Commanders and the Military Secretary to the Army Air Defence leadership and the National Disaster Management Authority. Seven Lieutenant Generals are expected to retire during October, including Lt Gen Asim Malik, Lt Gen Shahid Imtiaz, Lt Gen Ahsan Gulrez, Lt Gen Nauman Zakaria, Lt Gen Fayyaz Hussain Shah, Lt Gen Muhammad Zafar Iqbal and Lt Gen Inam Haider Malik.

The significance of the expected retirements lies in the nature of the appointments currently held by these officers. The list includes the Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence and National Security Adviser, commanders of I Corps Mangla, II Corps Multan and IV Corps Lahore, the Military Secretary, the head of Army Air Defence and the chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority. Their departure could therefore initiate a chain reaction in which Major Generals are promoted to Lieutenant General rank, existing divisional commanders move into Corps-level appointments and further vacancies are created at the divisional level.

Understanding Pakistan Army’s Command Structure

To understand the scale of the expected October reshuffle, it is important to understand the Pakistan Army’s overall command architecture. The Army’s operational structure consists of nine major active Corps spread across strategically important parts of the country. In addition to these conventional Corps, Pakistan also maintains Corps-level formations responsible for Army Air Defence, Army Aviation and Strategic Forces.

The General Headquarters in Rawalpindi remains the centre of the Army’s senior command structure. At the operational level, a Corps is normally commanded by a Lieutenant General, while a Division is generally commanded by a Major General. Below the divisional level are brigades, normally commanded by Brigadiers, followed by battalion-level formations generally commanded by Lieutenant Colonels. This hierarchy means that a change at the Corps Commander level can eventually trigger a series of appointments further down the command chain.

Pakistan’s nine principal Corps are spread across Mangla, Multan, Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Quetta, Gujranwala and Bahawalpur. Their responsibilities cover major military regions across the country and include formations dealing with armoured warfare, infantry, mechanised forces and other operational requirements.

How Many Corps Does Pakistan Army Have?

Pakistan Army has nine principal operational Corps, while three major Corps-level formations—Army Air Defence, Army Aviation and Strategic Forces—operate separately within the wider military structure. The nine Corps are I Corps, II Corps, IV Corps, V Corps, X Corps, XI Corps, XII Corps, XXX Corps and XXXI Corps.

The geographical spread of these commands is significant. I Corps is headquartered at Mangla, II Corps at Multan, IV Corps at Lahore, V Corps at Karachi, X Corps at Rawalpindi, XI Corps at Peshawar, XII Corps at Quetta, XXX Corps at Gujranwala and XXXI Corps at Bahawalpur. Each Corps contains multiple major formations, including infantry, armoured and mechanised divisions.

I Corps — Mangla

I Corps is headquartered at Mangla and represents one of the Pakistan Army’s major formations in the country’s north-central military region. Its principal formations include the 6th Armoured Division, 17th Infantry Division and 37th Infantry Division. The Corps is currently commanded by Lt Gen Nauman Zakaria, whose expected retirement in October places I Corps among the formations likely to receive a new commander.

Lt Gen Nauman Zakaria has had an extensive military career involving operational planning, logistics and senior staff responsibilities. Before becoming Corps Commander, he served as Director General Military Operations, held the position of Chief of Logistics Staff and performed other senior General Headquarters assignments. He has also commanded the 9th Infantry Division and 41st Infantry Division as a General Officer Commanding. His experience therefore covers both divisional command and high-level Army Headquarters responsibilities.

Following his retirement, the next I Corps Commander is expected to be selected from among the senior Major Generals who meet the requirements for promotion to three-star rank. The appointment will be closely watched because I Corps is one of Pakistan Army’s major operational commands.

II Corps — Multan

II Corps is headquartered at Multan and is responsible for an important military area in central and southern Punjab. Its principal formations include the 1st Armoured Division and 40th Infantry Division. The Corps is currently commanded by Lt Gen Ahsan Gulrez, who is also among the senior officers expected to retire in October 2026.

Lt Gen Ahsan Gulrez assumed command of II Corps in October 2024. His career has included senior command and staff responsibilities within the Pakistan Army, eventually taking him to one of the Army’s most important Corps-level appointments. His departure will create one of the most significant vacancies in the October reshuffle.

The successor to II Corps is likely to emerge from the pool of senior Major Generals being considered for promotion to Lieutenant General. The officer selected will inherit command of a major operational formation containing both armoured and infantry elements.

IV Corps — Lahore

IV Corps, headquartered at Lahore, is another highly significant Pakistan Army formation. It has responsibility for an important part of Punjab and includes the 10th Infantry Division and 11th Infantry Division. The Corps is currently commanded by Lt Gen Fayyaz Hussain Shah, who is also expected to retire in October.

Lt Gen Fayyaz Hussain Shah assumed command of IV Corps in January 2025. Before that, he held several senior appointments, including responsibilities connected with Training and Evaluation, senior positions at General Headquarters, Inspector General-level assignments and a senior role associated with the Frontier Corps in Balochistan. He also served at the National Defence University.

His retirement would open one of the most prominent Corps Commander positions in the Pakistan Army. The next commander will be responsible for one of the Army’s most important formations and will likely be drawn from the senior Major General cadre.

V Corps — Karachi

V Corps is headquartered in Karachi and represents the Pakistan Army’s major Corps-level formation in the country’s southern region. It includes the 16th Infantry Division, 18th Infantry Division and 25th Mechanised Division. The Corps is currently commanded by Lt Gen Avais Dastgir, who is not included in the October retirement list.

Lt Gen Avais Dastgir assumed command of V Corps in January 2025. Before becoming Corps Commander, he served as Chief of General Staff at General Headquarters from November 2023 until January 2025. His earlier career included important operational and staff responsibilities and he was commissioned into the 58th Cavalry.

Because his name is not among the seven Lieutenant Generals expected to retire in October, V Corps is not immediately affected by the current retirement cycle. However, the wider promotion and transfer process could eventually influence the broader senior command structure.

X Corps — Rawalpindi

X Corps is headquartered at Rawalpindi and occupies a particularly important position within Pakistan’s military command structure. Its formations include the 12th Infantry Division, 19th Infantry Division, 23rd Infantry Division and 34th Light Infantry Division.

The Corps is currently commanded by Lt Gen Amer Ahsan Nawaz, who assumed the appointment in August 2025. Before becoming Corps Commander, he served as Military Secretary at General Headquarters and also held the position of Commandant of the Command and Staff College at Quetta. He was commissioned into the 3 Baloch regiment and has experience in both operational and senior staff appointments.

X Corps is not directly part of the October retirement list, but the promotions resulting from the seven retirements could eventually produce changes across the wider senior command chain.

XI Corps — Peshawar

XI Corps is headquartered at Peshawar and represents one of the Pakistan Army’s principal formations in the country’s northwest. Its major formations include the 7th Infantry Division and 9th Infantry Division.

The Corps is currently commanded by Lt Gen Syed Omer Ahmed Bokhari. The geographical location of XI Corps makes it particularly significant in the context of Pakistan’s western frontier and internal security environment. The Corps has historically been associated with responsibilities extending beyond conventional military operations and into counter-terrorism and security operations.

The command remains outside the immediate October retirement list, meaning the current Corps Commander is expected to continue unless further changes are announced.

XII Corps — Quetta

XII Corps is headquartered at Quetta and is responsible for a vast military region covering Balochistan. Its major formations include the 33rd Infantry Division, 41st Infantry Division and 44th Light Infantry Division.

The Corps is commanded by Lt Gen Rahat Naseem Ahmed Khan. Before taking command of XII Corps, he served in several senior positions, including President of the National Defence University, senior responsibilities with Frontier Corps Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Chief of Staff at II Corps.

Lt Gen Rahat Naseem Khan assumed command of XII Corps in November 2023. His name is not included among the seven Lieutenant Generals expected to retire in October, leaving the Quetta Corps outside the immediate leadership transition.

XXX Corps — Gujranwala

XXX Corps is headquartered at Gujranwala and is responsible for an important military area in Punjab. Its principal formations include the 8th Infantry Division and 15th Infantry Division.

The Corps is currently commanded by Lt Gen Syed Imdad Hussain Shah, who assumed the appointment in December 2023. His name is not included in the current list of seven Lieutenant Generals expected to retire in October.

The Gujranwala command therefore represents one of the major Corps appointments that is expected to remain stable while the Army deals with the retirement-driven vacancies elsewhere.

XXXI Corps — Bahawalpur

XXXI Corps is headquartered at Bahawalpur and is another important formation in Pakistan’s southern Punjab military structure. Its principal formations include the 14th Infantry Division, 26th Mechanised Division and 35th Infantry Division.

The Corps is currently commanded by Lt Gen Muhammad Aqeel, who assumed command in May 2025. The Bahawalpur Corps has a significant conventional military role, particularly because of its armoured and mechanised formations.

Lt Gen Muhammad Aqeel is not included among the seven Lieutenant Generals expected to retire in October, meaning XXXI Corps is not directly affected by the current retirement cycle.

The Three Major Corps-Level Formations Beyond the Nine Operational Corps

Pakistan Army’s structure also includes three major Corps-level formations outside the nine conventional operational Corps: Army Air Defence, Army Aviation and Strategic Forces.

Army Air Defence is responsible for the Army’s air-defence structure. Army Aviation provides aviation capabilities and aerial support, while Strategic Forces are associated with Pakistan’s strategic missile infrastructure.

Army Air Defence is particularly relevant to the October reshuffle because its current commander, Lt Gen Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, is among the seven Lieutenant Generals expected to retire.

The Seven Senior Lieutenant Generals Expected to Retire in October 2026

The October retirement cycle is significant because seven senior Lieutenant Generals are expected to leave service around the same period. Their current positions span intelligence, Corps command, Army Air Defence, military administration and national disaster management.

The seven names are Lt Gen Asim Malik, Lt Gen Shahid Imtiaz, Lt Gen Ahsan Gulrez, Lt Gen Nauman Zakaria, Lt Gen Fayyaz Hussain Shah, Lt Gen Muhammad Zafar Iqbal and Lt Gen Inam Haider Malik. Their departure is expected to create several major vacancies simultaneously.

The resulting vacancies could trigger a promotion cycle in which several serving Major Generals move to three-star rank. Those promotions could then lead to new General Officer Commanding appointments at the divisional level.

Lt Gen Asim Malik — The Most Closely Watched Departure

Lt Gen Asim Malik is perhaps the most closely watched name on the retirement list. He is serving as Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence and also holds the responsibility of National Security Adviser.

He became DG ISI in September 2024 and later received the additional national security responsibility. His career includes senior operational, intelligence and command assignments. He was commissioned through the 80th PMA Long Course and received the Sword of Honour.

His expected retirement could have the biggest institutional impact because the DG ISI position is one of Pakistan’s most influential national-security appointments. The officer who succeeds him would inherit responsibility for one of the country’s most important intelligence institutions.

The question of whether Lt Gen Asim Malik could continue in a national-security role after military retirement is also significant. Any decision regarding his post-retirement role would be closely connected with Pakistan’s evolving national-security structure.

Lt Gen Shahid Imtiaz — From X Corps to Military Secretary

Lt Gen Shahid Imtiaz is currently serving as Military Secretary and has previously commanded X Corps. His career therefore combines operational Corps command with one of the most important senior personnel and administrative positions at General Headquarters.

As Military Secretary, he has been involved in senior military personnel matters and appointments. His previous experience as a Corps Commander gave him direct operational command experience before moving to the Army Headquarters.

His retirement will create a vacancy at the Military Secretary’s office, while his earlier Corps command experience makes him one of the more senior officers in the current retirement cycle.

Lt Gen Ahsan Gulrez — Change at II Corps

Lt Gen Ahsan Gulrez is currently Commander II Corps at Multan. His expected retirement means the Multan-based Corps will require a new three-star commander.

His command experience and seniority place him among the officers whose departure will directly affect the Pakistan Army’s operational command structure. His successor will likely be selected from among the senior Major Generals who are promoted during the post-retirement reshuffle.

Lt Gen Nauman Zakaria — Change at I Corps

Lt Gen Nauman Zakaria is currently Commander I Corps at Mangla. His career includes senior responsibilities at the Directorate General of Military Operations, logistics-related assignments and divisional command.

He has commanded both the 9th and 41st Infantry Divisions and later moved into senior General Headquarters appointments before taking command of I Corps. His career therefore covers the full progression from divisional command to Corps-level leadership.

His expected retirement will open one of Pakistan Army’s most important Corps Commander positions.

Lt Gen Fayyaz Hussain Shah — Change at IV Corps Lahore

Lt Gen Fayyaz Hussain Shah assumed command of IV Corps Lahore in January 2025. His previous appointments include senior Training and Evaluation responsibilities, General Headquarters assignments, Frontier Corps-related responsibilities in Balochistan and an important role at the National Defence University.

His departure will create a vacancy at IV Corps and potentially open a route for another Major General to receive three-star rank and Corps command.

Lt Gen Muhammad Zafar Iqbal — Army Air Defence Leadership to Change

Lt Gen Muhammad Zafar Iqbal is currently leading Army Air Defence and is also included in the October retirement list.

His retirement is important because Army Air Defence operates as a major Corps-level formation outside the nine conventional operational Corps. The next commander will therefore assume responsibility for a specialised and strategically important part of Pakistan’s military structure.

Lt Gen Inam Haider Malik — Departure from NDMA

Lt Gen Inam Haider Malik is currently Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority. Unlike the Corps Commanders on the retirement list, his position is directly linked to national disaster management and civil-military coordination.

His departure will therefore result in a leadership change not only within the military hierarchy but also within Pakistan’s national emergency-management structure.

Major Intelligence Change: Faisal Naseer Transferred from ISI

Even before the October reshuffle, Pakistan’s intelligence establishment has undergone an important change. Major General Faisal Naseer was transferred from his position as DG(C) at the ISI and appointed National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Authority.

TIN reported on September 4, 2026, that Faisal Naseer was transferred from the ISI’s Internal Wing. The DG(C) position has often been described in media reports as a counter-intelligence role, but the more precise description is that it heads the ISI’s Internal Wing.

His appointment as National Coordinator of NACTA is for three years on deputation under the relevant legal framework. The new position places him at the centre of coordination between Pakistan’s counter-terrorism and security institutions.

Faisal Naseer’s name has also featured prominently in Pakistan’s political discourse. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf supporters have used a particular nickname for him, but institutionally his importance has primarily come from his senior intelligence responsibilities and association with Pakistan’s internal-security apparatus.

Who Could Replace Faisal Naseer?

One of the names being discussed for the important ISI Internal Wing responsibility is Major General Muhammad Atif Bin Akram. He has served as Director General of Punjab Rangers and has experience in security and internal-security responsibilities.

Atif Bin Akram belongs to the Punjab Regiment and has held senior command responsibilities in the paramilitary structure. His experience with Rangers gives him a background that could be relevant to an appointment involving internal security and intelligence coordination.

If he receives the ISI responsibility, it would represent a significant step in his career and could potentially strengthen his position within the senior military leadership pipeline.

Major Generals in the Race for Three-Star Promotion

The retirement of seven Lieutenant Generals could create space for a new group of Major Generals to move into three-star appointments. Among the names being watched are Major General Kamran Tabrez Savera, Major General Javed Dost Chandio, Major General Iftikhar Hassan Chaudhary, Major General Wajid Aziz, Major General Muhammad Imtanan Babar and Major General Muhammad Naeem Akhter.

Major General Kamran Tabrez Savera belongs to the 47 Baloch lineage, while Major General Javed Dost Chandio belongs to the 63 Frontier Force. Chandio has held an important position associated with the Directorate General Production at Pakistan Ordnance Factories Wah.

Major General Iftikhar Hassan Chaudhary comes from the artillery branch and has held important responsibilities associated with the Pakistan Military Academy at Kakul. Major General Wajid Aziz has served in important military-intelligence and security-related positions. Major General Muhammad Imtanan Babar belongs to the Engineers and has commanded the 45 Engineer Division. Major General Muhammad Naeem Akhter belongs to the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Regiment and has served in a senior instructional role at the National Defence University.

Major General Javed Dost Chandio — Defence Production Experience

Major General Javed Dost Chandio is associated with the 63 Frontier Force and has experience extending into Pakistan’s defence-production establishment. His responsibilities connected with Pakistan Ordnance Factories Wah have given him exposure to the country’s defence-industrial system in addition to his military career.

A promotion to Lieutenant General would place him in contention for a senior General Headquarters, operational or command appointment, depending on the Army’s final seniority and posting decisions.

Major General Kamran Tabrez Savera — A Senior Name to Watch

Major General Kamran Tabrez Savera belongs to the 47 Baloch and has been among the officers whose seniority has attracted attention during earlier promotion cycles.

His career has included important assignments connected with Pakistan’s strategic and senior military institutions. If the October reshuffle creates sufficient vacancies at the three-star level, his name could become significant in the next stage of senior appointments.

Major General Muhammad Imtanan Babar — Engineers Background

Major General Muhammad Imtanan Babar belongs to the Engineers branch and has commanded the 45 Engineer Division. His background is significant because the Engineers provide critical military support across infrastructure, mobility, field engineering and other operational requirements.

Command of an Engineer Division represents senior divisional-level experience and places an officer in the wider pool from which future three-star appointments can be considered.

How Many Divisions Does Pakistan Army Have?

Pakistan Army’s operational structure includes approximately 25 major divisions across its nine conventional Corps. These formations include infantry, armoured, mechanised and light infantry divisions. A Division is normally commanded by a Major General.

Under I Corps are the 6th Armoured Division, 17th Infantry Division and 37th Infantry Division. II Corps has the 1st Armoured Division and 40th Infantry Division. IV Corps has the 10th and 11th Infantry Divisions. V Corps has the 16th and 18th Infantry Divisions and the 25th Mechanised Division.

X Corps has the 12th, 19th and 23rd Infantry Divisions and the 34th Light Infantry Division. XI Corps has the 7th and 9th Infantry Divisions. XII Corps has the 33rd and 41st Infantry Divisions and the 44th Light Infantry Division. XXX Corps has the 8th and 15th Infantry Divisions, while XXXI Corps has the 14th Infantry Division, 26th Mechanised Division and 35th Infantry Division.

Current Divisional Commanders Also Matter

The Corps-level reshuffle will inevitably have an impact on divisional commands. When a serving Major General is promoted to Lieutenant General and appointed Corps Commander, the Division he currently commands becomes vacant. That vacancy must then be filled by another Major General, creating another movement in the command structure.

Among the senior divisional commanders currently listed are Major General Azhar Yasin with the 17th Infantry Division, Major General Waseem Iftikhar Cheema with the 14th Infantry Division, Major General Muhammad Intikhab Alam with the 23rd Infantry Division, Major General Shahid Amir Afsar with the 9th Infantry Division, Major General Nisar Ul Haq with the 41st Infantry Division and Major General Mazhar Nazir with the 35th Infantry Division.

Major General Muhammad Imran Khan Babar is associated with the 15th Infantry Division, Major General Adnan Sultan with the 25th Mechanised Division, Major General Usman Farooq Kiyani with the 1st Armoured Division and Major General Yahya Usman Gondal with the 18th Infantry Division.

The wider divisional command structure also includes Major General Atif Bashir with the 10th Infantry Division, Major General Zarar Mehmood with the 12th Infantry Division, Major General Bilal Mehmood with the 37th Infantry Division, Major General Mudasser Saeed with the 40th Infantry Division, Major General Shehryar Munir Hafiez with the 33rd Infantry Division and Major General Shehryar Qureshi with the 16th Infantry Division.

Other listed divisional commanders include Major General Adil Iftikhar Warriach with the 7th Infantry Division, Major General Amjad Aziz Mughal with the 34th Light Infantry Division, Major General Zulfikar Shaheen with the 8th Infantry Division, Major General Habib Nawaz with the 44th Division, Major General Sardar Muhammad Tariq Khan with the 6th Armoured Division and Major General Muhammad Shoaib with the 21st Artillery Division.

The Chain Reaction After Seven Retirements

The most important aspect of the October reshuffle is that the process will not stop with seven retirements. Once the vacancies are created, new Lieutenant Generals will have to be appointed to the Corps-level positions. If serving Major Generals are promoted, their current divisional commands will become vacant.

Those vacancies will then require new General Officers Commanding. The officers moving into those positions may themselves have to be replaced at their existing appointments. In this way, a retirement at the Lieutenant General level can eventually trigger a much wider chain of postings across the Major General cadre.

This is why the October reshuffle could become much larger than the headline number of seven retirements suggests.

The Rise of General Syed Aamer Raza

The broader restructuring of Pakistan’s senior military command must also be viewed against the emergence of General Syed Aamer Raza in the strategic command structure.

In July 2026, Lt Gen Aamer Raza was promoted to four-star rank and appointed Commander of the National Strategic Command. The appointment represented an important development in Pakistan’s strategic military architecture.

Before his elevation, Aamer Raza had served as Chief of General Staff and held a range of operational and senior staff appointments. His earlier career included command of an armoured regiment, an armoured brigade, an infantry brigade in South Waziristan, an infantry division and IV Corps, along with senior responsibilities connected with Heavy Industries Taxila and weapons and equipment.

The creation and strengthening of the National Strategic Command has added another important layer to Pakistan’s evolving senior military command system. The appointment also came after broader institutional changes introduced following Pakistan’s constitutional and defence-command restructuring.

A New Phase of Pakistan’s Military Command Structure

Pakistan’s military leadership structure has undergone major changes since the constitutional restructuring that created the Chief of Defence Forces framework and altered the relationship between the country’s military services.

The new structure has increased the importance of the senior command hierarchy extending from the country’s top military leadership down through Corps Commanders and divisional commanders. Against this background, the October retirement cycle becomes even more significant because the incoming officers will operate within a command system that has itself been undergoing transformation.

The promotion decisions following the seven retirements could therefore shape not only individual postings but also the composition of Pakistan’s next generation of senior military leadership.

Which Appointments Will Be Watched Most Closely?

The most closely watched appointments will be the next commanders of I Corps Mangla, II Corps Multan and IV Corps Lahore, along with the new head of Army Air Defence. The next Director General of ISI will also be one of the most consequential appointments in Pakistan’s national-security establishment.

The Military Secretary’s office will require a new senior officer following Shahid Imtiaz’s retirement, while the National Disaster Management Authority will also need new leadership following the departure of Inam Haider Malik.

At the same time, the appointment of new Corps Commanders will automatically create new vacancies at the divisional level. This means the final reshuffle could involve significantly more officers than the seven Lieutenant Generals whose retirement begins the process.

October 2026 Could Reshape Pakistan Army’s Next Leadership Generation

The October 2026 reshuffle is therefore much larger than a routine retirement cycle. Seven senior Lieutenant Generals are expected to leave service, including the serving ISI chief and National Security Adviser, three major Corps Commanders, the Military Secretary, the Army Air Defence Commander and the NDMA chairman.

Their departure could open a chain of promotions and transfers extending from the three-star level to the two-star level. Senior Major Generals with divisional command experience could be promoted to Lieutenant General and then appointed to Corps commands. Their existing Division commands would subsequently be assigned to new Major Generals.

The process could eventually change the leadership of multiple major military formations across Pakistan.

Pakistan Army Heads Towards a Major October Leadership Reset

Pakistan’s military command structure is already undergoing a period of institutional transformation. The emergence of the National Strategic Command, changes in the country’s higher defence-command architecture and the evolving role of the Chief of Defence Forces have created a new backdrop for the Army’s senior leadership.

Against that backdrop, the expected October retirement of Lt Gen Asim Malik, Lt Gen Shahid Imtiaz, Lt Gen Ahsan Gulrez, Lt Gen Nauman Zakaria, Lt Gen Fayyaz Hussain Shah, Lt Gen Muhammad Zafar Iqbal and Lt Gen Inam Haider Malik could become one of the most consequential senior military transitions of 2026.

The immediate focus will be on who takes over I Corps Mangla, II Corps Multan and IV Corps Lahore, who succeeds the Army Air Defence commander, who replaces the Military Secretary and, above all, who emerges as the next Director General of ISI.

But the larger story will unfold below the three-star level. If Major Generals such as Kamran Tabrez Savera, Javed Dost Chandio, Iftikhar Hassan Chaudhary, Wajid Aziz, Muhammad Imtanan Babar and Muhammad Naeem Akhter move into the next level of senior command, their promotions could become the first step in a much broader realignment of Pakistan Army leadership.

In other words, October 2026 may not simply mark the retirement of seven Lieutenant Generals—it could mark the beginning of a wider generational transition across Pakistan’s military command structure. From Corps Headquarters to divisional commands, from intelligence leadership to Army Air Defence, and from General Headquarters to strategic institutions, the appointments made during this period could influence the composition and direction of Pakistan’s senior military leadership for years to come.

BY DEFENCE JOURNALIST SAHIL | T.I.N. NETWORK
