Rajni Chhabra Presents Insightful Lecture on Ethics at International Council of Ethics and World Poetry Conference

Pune : The International Council of Ethics and World Poetry Conference witnessed a profound presentation on the topic of “Ethics” by Rajni Chhabra, a renowned resource person, during the two-day Interdisciplinary Council held at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Mahavidhyala, Pune. The conference, which took place on the 14th and 15th of October 2024, aimed to foster dialogue on ethics, morality, and social responsibility through various interdisciplinary approaches.

In her presentation, Rajni Chhabra delved into the philosophical roots of ethics, tracing its origin to the ancient Greek word ‘ethos,’ meaning character and personal disposition. She explained that ethics, at its core, is the study of moral principles, exploring how individuals should act in different situations. Her lecture covered a wide range of ethical concepts, including how to live a good life, make moral decisions, and examine one’s personal standards to ensure they are reasonable and well-founded.

Chhabra explained that ethics is pragmatic and an amalgamation of several key qualities:

  • Earnestness: Signifying seriousness and sincerity in purpose and effort.
  • Truthfulness: Promoting honesty and integrity in all aspects of life.
  • Humanitarianism: Emphasizing compassion and promoting human welfare.
  • Integrity: Upholding strong moral principles and loyalty.
  • Communal Harmony: Encouraging unity and understanding within society.
  • Social Sensibility: The ability to perceive others’ feelings and respond appropriately to social contexts.

In elaborating on these qualities, Chhabra shared a touching anecdote about a schoolboy who helped an elderly woman cross the road, showcasing how ethical behavior is often a reflection of family values and upbringing. The story highlighted the importance of empathy, responsibility, and community engagement, qualities that should be instilled from a young age.

She emphasized the role of community-centric education in fostering strong connections between students, schools, and their communities. Chhabra explained that this approach not only enhances academic rigor but also encourages social and cultural responsiveness, teamwork, and civic engagement, ultimately cultivating a sense of belonging within society.

Furthermore, Chhabra highlighted the importance of human values in fostering empathy and compassion. She noted that applying these values consistently leads to personal growth and positively impacts society as a whole.

The presentation also addressed the role of media in shaping ethical and moral values, particularly through the portrayal of characters in films and television. Chhabra explained how these media representations serve as role models for viewers and significantly influence their perception of right and wrong.

In her concluding remarks, Chhabra beautifully compared ethics to the “fragrance of flowers,” which, though invisible, spreads far and wide, creating a purifying atmosphere. She urged the audience to recognize the far-reaching effects of ethical values on individuals and society, emphasizing that ethics serve as a guiding force in decision-making and promote accountability and responsibility.

The presentation was well-received by attendees, who appreciated Chhabra’s in-depth understanding of ethics and her ability to relate complex philosophical ideas to practical, everyday scenarios. The conference provided an enriching platform for discussions on ethics and morality, drawing participants from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds.

Rajni Chhabra’s contribution to the conference underscored the significance of ethics in creating a just and harmonious society. Her insightful discourse left a lasting impression on the audience, reinforcing the importance of ethical values in personal and communal development.
