Strengthening Maritime Security: Indian Coast Guard Marks Major Milestones in Fast Patrol Vessel Construction
India’s maritime security architecture received a significant boost on 29 January 2026, as the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) marked two critical milestones in its fast patrol vessel modernisation programme. The Keel Laying Ceremony of Fast Patrol Vessel FPV-3 and the Plate Cutting Ceremony of FPV-6 were held at Ritchie Dry Dock (RDD), Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), New Delhi, under the ambitious project for the construction of 14 Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs). These milestones underscore India’s growing focus on coastal security, indigenisation, and self-reliance in defence shipbuilding.
Ceremonial Significance Reflecting Progress in Indigenous Shipbuilding
The twin ceremonies were presided over by DIG Vinod Sakharkar, Chief Staff Officer (Technical), Coast Guard Regional Headquarters (West), and DIG Shashi Bhusan, Chief Staff Officer (Refit), Coast Guard Regional Headquarters (West), who attended as Chief Guests. Senior officials from the Indian Coast Guard and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited were also present, reflecting the close coordination between the operational arm of maritime security and India’s premier defence shipyard. The keel laying and plate cutting events symbolise the formal transition of these vessels from design and planning stages to active construction, marking tangible progress in a strategically vital project.
Fast Patrol Vessels Project: Contractual Framework and Strategic Vision
The contract for the design and construction of 14 Fast Patrol Vessels was concluded between the Indian Coast Guard and MDL on 24 January 2024. This project forms a crucial component of the Coast Guard’s long-term force augmentation plan, aimed at strengthening surveillance, interdiction, and rapid response capabilities along India’s vast coastline and island territories. The timely execution of the project reflects MDL’s expanding role in supporting national maritime security requirements and the Coast Guard’s emphasis on fleet modernisation.

The FPVs under this project are water-jet propelled vessels with an approximate displacement of 340 tonnes, designed specifically to meet the operational demands of the Indian Coast Guard. These vessels will be capable of undertaking a wide spectrum of missions, including coastal security patrols, search and rescue operations, and maritime law enforcement. The use of water-jet propulsion enhances manoeuvrability, speed, and operational flexibility, particularly in shallow waters and high-tempo coastal environments where rapid response is critical.
High Indigenous Content Reinforcing Atmanirbhar Bharat
A defining feature of the FPV project is its strong emphasis on indigenisation, with a minimum indigenous content of 60%. This commitment aligns directly with the national vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, aimed at reducing dependence on foreign suppliers while strengthening domestic defence manufacturing capabilities. The indigenous footprint of the vessels is further enhanced through the integration of locally manufactured gearboxes from M/s Triveni, Mysore, and water jets from M/s MJP India, showcasing the growing maturity of India’s defence industrial ecosystem.
Integration of Cutting-Edge Technology and Future-Ready Systems
The Fast Patrol Vessels will be equipped with state-of-the-art machinery and advanced technological systems, marking a qualitative leap in the Indian Coast Guard’s operational capabilities. Notably, the vessels will feature AI-based predictive maintenance systems, enabling real-time health monitoring of critical machinery, reducing downtime, and improving overall fleet availability. Additionally, the integration of multipurpose drones will significantly enhance surveillance, reconnaissance, and search-and-rescue effectiveness, extending the operational reach of the vessels beyond traditional line-of-sight limitations.
Keel Laying and Plate Cutting: Key Milestones in Project Execution
The keel laying of FPV-3 represents the formal commencement of hull construction, traditionally regarded as one of the most important milestones in shipbuilding. Simultaneously, the plate cutting ceremony of FPV-6 signals the initiation of fabrication activities for another vessel in the series. Together, these events highlight steady progress across multiple hulls, reflecting efficient project management and parallel construction strategies aimed at timely delivery of all fourteen vessels.

14 फास्ट पेट्रोल वेसल परियोजना: समझौते से निर्माण तक का सफर
भारतीय तटरक्षक बल और मझगांव डॉक शिपबिल्डर्स लिमिटेड के बीच 14 फास्ट पेट्रोल वेसल्स के डिज़ाइन और निर्माण का अनुबंध 24 जनवरी 2024 को संपन्न हुआ था। यह परियोजना तटरक्षक बल की दीर्घकालिक क्षमता वृद्धि योजना का एक महत्वपूर्ण हिस्सा है, जिसका उद्देश्य भारत की लंबी तटरेखा और द्वीपीय क्षेत्रों में निगरानी, त्वरित कार्रवाई और समुद्री कानून प्रवर्तन को और मजबूत करना है। इस परियोजना में मझगांव डॉक की भूमिका देश के प्रमुख रक्षा शिपयार्ड के रूप में और अधिक सुदृढ़ होती है।
आधुनिक डिज़ाइन और बहुआयामी परिचालन क्षमता
इस परियोजना के तहत निर्मित किए जा रहे फास्ट पेट्रोल वेसल्स वॉटर-जेट प्रोपल्शन सिस्टम से लैस होंगे और इनका अनुमानित विस्थापन लगभग 340 टन होगा। इन जहाजों को विशेष रूप से तटीय सुरक्षा, खोज एवं बचाव (Search and Rescue) तथा समुद्री कानून प्रवर्तन जैसे अभियानों के लिए डिज़ाइन किया गया है। वॉटर-जेट तकनीक के कारण ये जहाज उथले पानी में भी बेहतर संचालन क्षमता, उच्च गति और बेहतर नियंत्रण प्रदान करेंगे, जो तटीय क्षेत्रों में त्वरित प्रतिक्रिया के लिए अत्यंत आवश्यक है।
आत्मनिर्भर भारत की दिशा में मजबूत स्वदेशी सामग्री
फास्ट पेट्रोल वेसल परियोजना की सबसे महत्वपूर्ण विशेषताओं में से एक है इसमें कम से कम 60 प्रतिशत स्वदेशी सामग्री का उपयोग। यह पहल सीधे तौर पर आत्मनिर्भर भारत के राष्ट्रीय दृष्टिकोण के अनुरूप है। जहाजों में मैसर्स त्रिवेणी, मैसूर द्वारा निर्मित स्वदेशी गियरबॉक्स और मैसर्स एमजेपी इंडिया द्वारा निर्मित वॉटर-जेट्स का समावेश किया जा रहा है, जो यह दर्शाता है कि भारतीय रक्षा उद्योग अब अत्याधुनिक समुद्री प्रणालियां विकसित करने में सक्षम हो चुका है।
अत्याधुनिक तकनीक और भविष्य के लिए तैयार प्रणालियां
इन फास्ट पेट्रोल वेसल्स को अत्याधुनिक मशीनरी और उन्नत तकनीकी प्रणालियों से सुसज्जित किया जाएगा। इनमें एआई आधारित प्रेडिक्टिव मेंटेनेंस सिस्टम शामिल होंगे, जो जहाजों की मशीनरी की वास्तविक समय में निगरानी कर रखरखाव को अधिक प्रभावी बनाएंगे और परिचालन उपलब्धता बढ़ाएंगे। इसके अलावा, मल्टीपर्पज ड्रोन की तैनाती से निगरानी, खोज एवं बचाव अभियानों और समुद्री स्थितिजन्य जागरूकता में उल्लेखनीय बढ़ोतरी होगी।
कील लेइंग और प्लेट कटिंग: निर्माण प्रक्रिया के अहम चरण
FPV-3 की कील लेइंग जहाज के ढांचे के निर्माण की औपचारिक शुरुआत को दर्शाती है, जिसे जहाज निर्माण की सबसे महत्वपूर्ण उपलब्धियों में से एक माना जाता है। वहीं FPV-6 की प्लेट कटिंग उस जहाज के निर्माण की शुरुआती प्रक्रिया को इंगित करती है। एक साथ कई जहाजों पर कार्य आरंभ होना यह दर्शाता है कि परियोजना को समयबद्ध ढंग से पूरा करने के लिए समानांतर निर्माण रणनीति अपनाई जा रही है।
