Air Marshal PV Shivanand Assumes Command of South Western Air Command; Veteran Fighter Pilot Takes Charge of IAF’s Strategic Western Air Theatre

The Indian Air Force (IAF) witnessed a significant leadership transition on 1 July 2026 as Air Marshal PV Shivanand, AVSM, VM, officially assumed charge as the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C), South Western Air Command (SWAC). One of the Indian Air Force’s most experienced fighter pilots and operational commanders, Air Marshal Shivanand takes over the command of one of the IAF’s most strategically important operational formations responsible for safeguarding India’s western and south-western airspace.
Soon after assuming command, Air Marshal Shivanand formally took over the responsibilities of the South Western Air Command, headquartered in Jaipur. The Command plays a crucial role in maintaining round-the-clock operational readiness along India’s western frontier and supports integrated air operations in coordination with the Indian Army and other security agencies. The appointment comes at a time when the Indian Air Force continues to strengthen its combat capability, enhance jointness among the armed forces, and accelerate modernization under an evolving regional security environment.
Commissioned into the Fighter Stream of the Indian Air Force in December 1988, Air Marshal PV Shivanand has served the nation for nearly four decades. Throughout his distinguished career, he has accumulated extensive operational flying experience, commanded frontline formations, and held several key staff and leadership appointments that have contributed significantly to enhancing the operational effectiveness of the Indian Air Force.
Before taking over as AOC-in-C of South Western Air Command, Air Marshal Shivanand served as the Senior Air Staff Officer (SASO) at Headquarters Central Air Command, where he was responsible for overseeing operational planning, air defence preparedness, force deployment, training, and mission readiness. His experience in operational leadership and strategic planning is expected to further strengthen the combat preparedness of South Western Air Command.
Over the years, Air Marshal Shivanand has built an outstanding reputation as a fighter pilot, operational planner, and military leader. His career reflects deep expertise in air combat operations, force management, joint military planning, and command responsibilities. Having served in diverse operational environments, he possesses extensive knowledge of modern aerial warfare, network-centric operations, and integrated air defence.
The South Western Air Command occupies a position of immense strategic significance within the Indian Air Force. Responsible for securing a vast geographical area that includes sensitive sectors along India’s western borders, the Command regularly undertakes air defence missions, combat readiness exercises, surveillance operations, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief missions, and joint military exercises with the Indian Army. It remains one of the key operational commands responsible for ensuring rapid response capability during any contingency.
As Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Air Marshal Shivanand will oversee operational planning, combat preparedness, modernization initiatives, infrastructure development, personnel management, training standards, and force integration within the Command. His leadership will be instrumental in ensuring that the Indian Air Force maintains its technological edge and operational superiority in an increasingly complex regional security environment.
Air Marshal PV Shivanand is a recipient of the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and the Vayu Sena Medal (VM), honours that recognize his exceptional service, professional excellence, and distinguished contribution to national defence. His appointment reflects the confidence placed in his leadership abilities and his decades of dedicated service to the nation.
With his assumption of command, South Western Air Command is expected to continue enhancing its operational capabilities, strengthen jointness with the Indian Army and other security forces, expand the integration of indigenous defence technologies, and maintain a high state of combat readiness to safeguard India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

भारतीय वायुसेना (IAF) के पश्चिमी रणनीतिक मोर्चे पर नेतृत्व परिवर्तन के तहत 1 जुलाई 2026 को एयर मार्शल पीवी शिवानंद, AVSM, VM ने आधिकारिक रूप से एयर ऑफिसर कमांडिंग-इन-चीफ (AOC-in-C), साउथ वेस्टर्न एयर कमांड (SWAC) का पदभार ग्रहण कर लिया। भारतीय वायुसेना के अत्यंत अनुभवी फाइटर पायलट और वरिष्ठ सैन्य कमांडर के रूप में उनकी नियुक्ति ऐसे समय हुई है जब देश की वायु सुरक्षा, संयुक्त सैन्य संचालन और आधुनिक युद्धक तैयारियों का महत्व लगातार बढ़ रहा है।
जयपुर स्थित साउथ वेस्टर्न एयर कमांड मुख्यालय में पदभार ग्रहण करने के साथ ही एयर मार्शल शिवानंद ने भारतीय वायुसेना के सबसे महत्वपूर्ण ऑपरेशनल कमांडों में से एक की जिम्मेदारी संभाल ली। यह कमांड भारत की पश्चिमी एवं दक्षिण-पश्चिमी सीमाओं की हवाई सुरक्षा, वायु रक्षा, युद्धक तैयारियों तथा भारतीय सेना के साथ संयुक्त अभियानों में अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाती है। राजस्थान, गुजरात और पश्चिमी सीमा क्षेत्र की सामरिक परिस्थितियों को देखते हुए इस कमांड का महत्व और भी बढ़ जाता है।
दिसंबर 1988 में भारतीय वायुसेना की फाइटर स्ट्रीम में कमीशन प्राप्त करने वाले एयर मार्शल पीवी शिवानंद लगभग चार दशकों से देश की सेवा कर रहे हैं। अपने लंबे सैन्य करियर में उन्होंने विभिन्न प्रकार के लड़ाकू विमानों का संचालन किया है तथा अनेक महत्वपूर्ण ऑपरेशनल, कमांड और स्टाफ नियुक्तियों पर उत्कृष्ट नेतृत्व का परिचय दिया है। उनकी पहचान एक कुशल फाइटर पायलट, रणनीतिक योजनाकार और प्रभावशाली सैन्य प्रशासक के रूप में रही है।
नई जिम्मेदारी संभालने से पहले वे मुख्यालय सेंट्रल एयर कमांड में सीनियर एयर स्टाफ ऑफिसर (SASO) के पद पर कार्यरत थे। इस दौरान उन्होंने वायु रक्षा, ऑपरेशनल योजना, मिशन तैयारी, प्रशिक्षण, संसाधन प्रबंधन तथा युद्धक क्षमता को मजबूत बनाने में महत्वपूर्ण योगदान दिया। उनका व्यापक अनुभव अब साउथ वेस्टर्न एयर कमांड की परिचालन क्षमता को और अधिक सुदृढ़ बनाने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाएगा।
साउथ वेस्टर्न एयर कमांड भारतीय वायुसेना का अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण ऑपरेशनल कमांड है, जिसकी जिम्मेदारी पश्चिमी सीमा पर निरंतर निगरानी, त्वरित वायु प्रतिक्रिया, हवाई सुरक्षा, सामरिक अभियानों, संयुक्त सैन्य अभ्यासों, मानवीय सहायता एवं आपदा राहत अभियानों सहित अनेक महत्वपूर्ण दायित्वों का निर्वहन करना है। आधुनिक सुरक्षा चुनौतियों के बीच इस कमांड की भूमिका लगातार और अधिक महत्वपूर्ण होती जा रही है।
एयर ऑफिसर कमांडिंग-इन-चीफ के रूप में एयर मार्शल शिवानंद अब कमांड की समग्र युद्धक तैयारी, परिचालन योजना, वायु रक्षा प्रणाली, सैन्य प्रशिक्षण, आधुनिक तकनीकों के समावेशन, आधारभूत संरचना के विकास, मानव संसाधन प्रबंधन तथा भारतीय सेना एवं अन्य सुरक्षा एजेंसियों के साथ संयुक्त समन्वय का नेतृत्व करेंगे। उनके अनुभव से भारतीय वायुसेना की पश्चिमी मोर्चे पर परिचालन क्षमता और अधिक मजबूत होने की उम्मीद है।
एयर मार्शल पीवी शिवानंद को उनके उत्कृष्ट सैन्य योगदान के लिए अति विशिष्ट सेवा पदक (AVSM) तथा वायु सेना पदक (VM) से सम्मानित किया जा चुका है। ये सम्मान उनके उत्कृष्ट नेतृत्व, परिचालन दक्षता, पेशेवर उत्कृष्टता और राष्ट्र सेवा के प्रति समर्पण का प्रमाण हैं।
उनका साउथ वेस्टर्न एयर कमांड की कमान संभालना केवल एक नियमित नियुक्ति नहीं, बल्कि भारतीय वायुसेना की उस रणनीतिक तैयारी का महत्वपूर्ण हिस्सा है जिसके तहत पश्चिमी सीमा पर हर परिस्थिति में त्वरित प्रतिक्रिया, आधुनिक युद्धक क्षमता, संयुक्त सैन्य समन्वय और आत्मनिर्भर भारत के तहत स्वदेशी रक्षा प्रणालियों के प्रभावी उपयोग को निरंतर मजबूत किया जा रहा है। उनके नेतृत्व में साउथ वेस्टर्न एयर कमांड के और अधिक सक्षम, आधुनिक तथा मिशन-रेडी बनने की उम्मीद की जा रही है।
