COAS and AWWA President Pledge Organ Donation, Giving Major Push to AORTA Initiative

In a historic and deeply symbolic gesture, the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), General Upendra Dwivedi, along with his wife Mrs Sunita Dwivedi, President of the Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA), pledged to donate their organs at the Army Hospital (Research & Referral) in Delhi. The decision is being hailed as a watershed moment in the Armed Forces Organ Retrieval & Transplantation Authority (AORTA) movement, aimed at creating mass awareness and inspiring both the Armed Forces community and the nation at large to embrace organ donation.

The Spirit of Sacrifice Beyond the Battlefield

For soldiers, the spirit of sacrifice is not confined to the battlefield. General Dwivedi, while addressing the gathering, called organ donation the ultimate act of service to humanity — an extension of the ethos of courage, sacrifice, and duty that defines the Armed Forces. “Our service is not just to defend the nation but also to uphold humanity in every possible way. Organ donation is the noblest gift one can give, ensuring that life continues even after we are gone,” the COAS remarked.

His wife, Mrs Sunita Dwivedi, who has been at the forefront of welfare initiatives for families of defence personnel, echoed the sentiment. She described organ donation as a “gift of continuity and compassion” and urged families across the country to join this movement of hope and healing.

AORTA: Leading the National Movement

Under the visionary leadership of Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS), AORTA has become a trailblazer in India’s organ transplantation efforts. Not only has it streamlined the process of retrieval and transplantation, but it has also ensured that awareness campaigns penetrate deep into the defence community.

The Indian Army has already created a national record, with more than 26,000 personnel pledging organ donation in a single campaign — a testament to the collective spirit of service that the Army embodies.

Recognising the Backbone of Organ Care

The event was not merely about pledges but also about recognising the unsung heroes of healthcare. In an unprecedented move, General Dwivedi presented on-the-spot Chief’s Recommendation Cards to three frontline staff engaged in organ transplant care, including a housekeeper who meticulously maintained hygiene and sanitation for patients.

By recognising the dedication of every contributor — from surgeons to support staff — the Army Chief highlighted that compassionate healthcare is a collective effort, where every role, however small it may seem, contributes to saving lives.

Tribute to Donor Families

Perhaps the most emotional segment of the evening was the solemn tribute to families of organ donors. These families, who turned their grief into a gift of life for others, were honoured and felicitated. Their resilience and compassion moved the gathering, reminding everyone that the story of organ donation is not just medical but profoundly human.

Setting an Example for the Nation

With this landmark pledge by the COAS and AWWA President, the Armed Forces have once again demonstrated their leadership beyond the call of duty. Just as the Army stands as a shield at the nation’s borders, it now also stands as a torchbearer in the realm of healthcare and humanitarian service.

The message is clear: if the Armed Forces can commit to such a noble cause, so can the wider society. This initiative could potentially trigger a chain reaction, inspiring lakhs of Indians to step forward and contribute to addressing the country’s chronic shortage of organ donors.

भारतीय थल सेना प्रमुख (COAS) जनरल उपेंद्र द्विवेदी और उनकी पत्नी श्रीमती सुनीता द्विवेदी, अध्यक्ष आर्मी वाइव्स वेलफेयर एसोसिएशन (AWWA) ने नई दिल्ली स्थित आर्मी हॉस्पिटल (रिसर्च एंड रिफरल) में अंगदान का संकल्प लिया। यह पहल न केवल सशस्त्र बल अंग प्राप्ति एवं प्रत्यारोपण प्राधिकरण (AORTA) को बड़ा बल प्रदान करती है, बल्कि पूरे देश में अंगदान आंदोलन को गति देने की दिशा में एक ऐतिहासिक कदम मानी जा रही है।

रणभूमि से परे बलिदान की भावना

जनरल द्विवेदी ने इसे मानवता की सर्वोच्च सेवा बताते हुए कहा कि अंगदान सैनिकों की उस बलिदानी भावना का विस्तार है जो उन्हें राष्ट्र रक्षा के लिए प्रेरित करती है। उन्होंने कहा, “हमारा कर्तव्य केवल सीमाओं की रक्षा तक सीमित नहीं है, बल्कि हर संभव तरीके से मानवता की सेवा करना भी है। अंगदान वह अमूल्य उपहार है जो जीवन को मृत्यु के बाद भी जारी रखता है।”

श्रीमती सुनीता द्विवेदी ने इसे “निरंतरता और करुणा का उपहार” बताते हुए परिवारों से इस आंदोलन में भाग लेने का आह्वान किया।

AORTA: राष्ट्रीय नेतृत्व की भूमिका

सर्जन वाइस एडमिरल अर्ति सारिन, महानिदेशक सशस्त्र बल चिकित्सा सेवाएं (DGAFMS) के नेतृत्व में AORTA देश में अंगदान एवं प्रत्यारोपण के क्षेत्र में अग्रणी संस्था के रूप में उभरी है। इसने न केवल प्रक्रिया को व्यवस्थित किया है, बल्कि जागरूकता अभियानों को सैनिक समुदाय तक गहराई से पहुंचाया है।

भारतीय सेना पहले ही एक रिकॉर्ड बना चुकी है, जहां 26,000 से अधिक सैनिकों ने एक ही अभियान में अंगदान का संकल्प लिया। यह भारतीय सेना की सामूहिक सेवा भावना का प्रतीक है।

स्वास्थ्यकर्मियों का सम्मान

कार्यक्रम में विशेष रूप से उन अनसुने नायकों को भी सम्मानित किया गया जो अंग प्रत्यारोपण देखभाल में लगे रहते हैं। सेनाध्यक्ष ने मौके पर ही तीन अग्रिम पंक्ति के स्वास्थ्यकर्मियों, जिनमें एक सफाई कर्मचारी भी शामिल था, को चीफ्स रिकमेंडेशन कार्ड प्रदान किए। यह gesture इस बात का प्रतीक है कि हर योगदान, चाहे वह चिकित्सक का हो या सफाई कर्मचारी का, जीवन बचाने में समान रूप से महत्वपूर्ण है।

दानवीर परिवारों को श्रद्धांजलि

समारोह का सबसे भावुक क्षण वह था जब अंगदान करने वाले परिवारों को श्रद्धांजलि दी गई। इन परिवारों ने अपने दुःख को दूसरों के जीवन का उपहार बना दिया। उनकी दृढ़ता और करुणा ने सभी को गहराई से प्रभावित किया।
