Indian Army Contingent Departs for 8th Edition of India-France Joint Military Exercise SHAKTI in France
In a significant step towards bolstering strategic defence cooperation, a 90-member contingent of the Indian Army departed today for France to participate in the 8th edition of the bilateral military exercise SHAKTI. The biennial training engagement between the Indian and French armies will take place from 18th June to 1st July 2025 at Camp Larzac in La Cavalerie, France.
This edition of Exercise SHAKTI marks another milestone in the ever-strengthening military-to-military cooperation between the two nations, focusing on interoperability, joint tactical proficiency, and sub-conventional operations training under the framework of Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter.
Indian Contingent Led by Jammu and Kashmir Rifles
The Indian Army is being represented primarily by a battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, supported by troops and officers from various other arms and services. Known for its valour and decorated operational history, the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles has previously participated in several UN peacekeeping and joint operational environments, making it a suitable lead for this prestigious bilateral exercise.
French Contingent from the Prestigious 13th Foreign Legion Half-Brigade
The French contingent will also comprise 90 personnel drawn from the renowned 13th Foreign Legion Half-Brigade (13e DBLE). This unit has an extensive operational legacy, particularly in counter-insurgency, desert warfare, and multinational missions across Africa and the Middle East.
Together, both contingents will engage in a series of tactical drills designed to replicate sub-conventional warfare scenarios in semi-urban environments, which are increasingly relevant in today’s hybrid battlefield domains.
Focus Areas of SHAKTI-VIII: From Tactical Drills to Interoperability
Exercise SHAKTI-VIII has been designed to encompass a wide spectrum of training modules, including:
- Tactical level counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations
- Cohesive command and control drills under UN mandates
- Tactical combat in semi-urban and rural terrains
- Joint patrolling, room intervention, hostage rescue, and vehicle checks
- Situational awareness with UAVs and new-gen surveillance tools
- Simulation-based training for multi-domain coordination
- Battlefield casualty evacuation and humanitarian operations
Both sides will also be exposed to new generation military hardware, exchange knowledge on combat tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs), and conduct integrated planning drills that mirror real-time operational environments.
More than a Drill: Strengthening Strategic Bilateral Ties
Exercise SHAKTI-VIII serves not merely as a training activity but also as a strategic confidence-building measure. The professional camaraderie developed during these exercises lays the foundation for greater understanding during real-world coalition operations or peacekeeping mandates.
India and France share deep-rooted defence ties, evident in numerous high-level exchanges, joint naval and air exercises (like VARUNA and GARUDA), and major defence procurements including the Rafale aircraft. SHAKTI-VIII further solidifies this trust-based cooperation in the land domain.
The Indian Army stated that the exercise is an embodiment of India’s growing global partnerships and military diplomacy, reinforcing India’s role as a responsible regional and global player committed to peace and cooperation under the UN framework.
Cultural Engagement and Mutual Learning
In addition to combat training, the troops will engage in cultural exchange programs to build interpersonal bonds and promote mutual respect. The exercise fosters not just tactical understanding, but also esprit de corps, an intangible yet critical aspect of coalition military operations.
Both contingents will also undertake physical endurance challenges, reinforcing their capability to function jointly in high-stress, fatigue-inducing operations.

भारत-फ्रांस संयुक्त सैन्य अभ्यास ‘SHAKTI’ के लिए भारतीय सेना रवाना, फ्रांस में होगा 8वां संस्करण
भारत और फ्रांस के बीच रक्षा सहयोग को और अधिक मजबूत करने की दिशा में एक महत्वपूर्ण कदम उठाते हुए भारतीय सेना का 90 सदस्यीय दल आज फ्रांस के कैम्प लारजैक, ला कैवलेरी के लिए रवाना हुआ है। यहां 18 जून से 1 जुलाई 2025 तक ‘SHAKTI’ सैन्य अभ्यास का आठवां संस्करण आयोजित किया जाएगा।
यह द्विवार्षिक अभ्यास दोनों सेनाओं के बीच संचालनिक समन्वय, संयुक्त युद्ध रणनीति और संयुक्त राष्ट्र चार्टर के अध्याय VII के तहत उप-पारंपरिक युद्ध संचालन पर केंद्रित होगा।
जम्मू-कश्मीर राइफल्स होगी भारतीय दल की अगुवाई में
भारतीय सेना की ओर से इस अभ्यास में भाग लेने वाला प्रमुख दल जम्मू-कश्मीर राइफल्स की एक बटालियन होगी, जिसमें अन्य हथियारों और सेवाओं के जवान और अधिकारी भी शामिल होंगे। जम्मू-कश्मीर राइफल्स की वीरता और संचालनिक अनुभव इसे इस उच्च स्तरीय अभ्यास के लिए एक आदर्श नेतृत्वकर्ता बनाते हैं।
फ्रांसीसी दल में शामिल होगी विदेशी सेना की 13वीं हाफ ब्रिगेड
फ्रांसीसी सेना की ओर से 13वीं विदेशी सेना हाफ ब्रिगेड (13e DBLE) के 90 सैनिक इस अभ्यास में भाग लेंगे। यह ब्रिगेड अफ्रीका और मध्य पूर्व में बहुपक्षीय अभियानों में अपनी विशेषज्ञता और प्रतिष्ठा के लिए जानी जाती है।
दोनों देश की सेनाएं मिलकर अर्ध-शहरी इलाकों में आतंकवाद विरोधी अभियानों के परिदृश्य को दोहराते हुए साझा प्रशिक्षण करेंगी।
SHAKTI-VIII के मुख्य फोकस क्षेत्र: सामरिक संचालन से तकनीकी साझा अभ्यास तक
इस सैन्य अभ्यास के दौरान कई उन्नत प्रशिक्षण कार्यक्रमों पर काम किया जाएगा, जैसे:

SHAKTI अभ्यास केवल युद्धाभ्यास नहीं, बल्कि रणनीतिक विश्वास का निर्माण है। यह भारत-फ्रांस रक्षा सहयोग की व्यापकता को दर्शाता है, जहां दोनों देश सामरिक, तकनीकी और व्यावसायिक स्तर पर गहराई से जुड़ रहे हैं।
राफेल विमानों की खरीद से लेकर नौसेना अभ्यास ‘VARUNA’ और वायुसेना अभ्यास ‘GARUDA’ तक, दोनों देश बहुआयामी सैन्य सहयोग को मजबूती दे रहे हैं। SHAKTI-VIII इसी कड़ी का अगला प्रगाढ़ चरण है।
सांस्कृतिक सहभागिता और सैन्य भाईचारे को भी बढ़ावा
इस अभ्यास के दौरान सैनिकों के बीच सांस्कृतिक आदान-प्रदान और शारीरिक सहनशक्ति अभ्यास भी होंगे, जिससे एकता, भाईचारा और पेशेवर समझ बढ़ेगी।
इस प्रकार का प्रशिक्षण न केवल युद्ध कौशल को निखारता है, बल्कि भविष्य में किसी बहुपक्षीय मिशन या शांति अभियान में सहयोग को मजबूत करता है।
भविष्य के युद्धक्षेत्रों के लिए साझा तैयारी
‘SHAKTI-VIII’ अभ्यास भारत और फ्रांस के बीच सामरिक साझेदारी का प्रतीक है। यह अभ्यास दिखाता है कि किस प्रकार दोनों देश बदलते सुरक्षा परिदृश्य के अनुरूप सामूहिक रूप से तैयार हो रहे हैं।
भारतीय सेना का यह कदम वैश्विक साझेदारी, कूटनीतिक समन्वय और बहुपक्षीय सहयोग की दिशा में एक और मजबूत पहल है।
